We have visited the Abbeydale Miniature Railway many times and we’re super excited to share this Sheffield hidden gem with you. We think you will absolutely love this place – whether you’re an avid trainspotter, or just looking for a giggle with your family. This is a fun, family friendly activity which is very affordable. There is a great community atmosphere at the Miniature Railway.
Just a head’s up – this place is only open on select Sundays. So you can’t just rock up and ride, you need to make sure you visit when it is actually running. We will give you details on this and more.

Where is the Abbeydale Miniature Railway located?
The Abbeydale Miniature Railway is located in a beautiful suburban valley to the south of Sheffield. It is just next to the Glen Private Nursing home and opposite to the Dore & Totley Railway station. The miniature railway site is pretty small (around 100m by 50m) and it is surrounded by Ecclesall woods.

How do you get to the Abbeydale Miniature Railway?
Travel by bus
You can get to the model railway by bus. The number 97, 98 and 218 all run along Abbeydale road past the Mini Railway site. Buses in Sheffield generally cost £2 – £5 depending on the ticket type and distance.
Take a train
The Abbeydale Model Railway site opposite to the Dore & Totley train station. This line connects Sheffield and Manchester via the Peak District. Not all services stop at Dore & Totley station so you need to check the timetable.
Drive
You can also drive to the Abbeydale Miniature Railway. There is a field with on site parking. Be aware that this field can get pretty crowded – arrive early to get a space. The parking field can also get muddy especially in rainy weather and in the winter months. You can also park on the road nearby but be careful not to block residents. Also be aware that Abbeydale road is a busy main road so take care.
When is the Abbeydale Miniature Railway open?
This most important part of planning your visit to the model railway is making sure you visit at the right time. The Abbeydale Miniature Railway is open on select Sunday afternoons from 1pm – 5pm. They are open an average around 2 times each month. They often close for a few months in the winter (normally January and February).

How much does it cost to visit the Abbeydale Miniature Railway?
It is FREE to enter the Abbeydale Miniature Railway. Parking is also free. If you wish to ride the trains it costs £2 per ticket. The price is the same for adults and children.
You can buy tickets from an office on site. You don’t need to pre-book tickets. They do run some special events from time to time. These may require pre-booking.
What can you do at the Abbeydale Miniature Railway?
The Abbeydale Miniature Railway is a great place to meet people and have some fun. They have several small model trains that you can ride around a track. Each train can carry around 10 – 15 passengers and each ride takes around 5 minutes and completes several loops of the track around the site. Each consecutive loop follows a slightly different route around the site so that you can see the different things as you ride.
From the train you can see Ecclesall woods, crossings and bridges and signal boxes. They run several different styles of train including electric motor engines and steam engines. There is a small cafe on site selling affordable drinks and cakes. They also have a miniature train model display. Many people bring picnics and relax on the lawns. For safety reasons ball games are not allowed on site. We recommend allowing 1 – 2 hours to visit.
During busy periods you may need to queue for 10 – 15 minutes for a train. Most of the time you can jump on a train quite quickly.
Is the Abbeydale Miniature Railway suitable for families?
Yes, the Abbeydale Miniature Railway is a great activity for kids. The Abbeydale Miniature Railway is absolutely magical to younger kids.
We do recommend careful supervision for young kids, especially toddlers. Some sections of the train track are open and access to the track is controlled by safety lights. There is also a pedestrian crossing at the top of the site that allows access to Ecclesall woods.
In our view the ideal age for the Abbeydale Miniature railway is 4 – 8 years old. At this age kids are a little more safe and competent and young enough to enjoy the magic. However, this really is a fun thing for families and kids of any age!
What facilities are available at the Abbeydale Miniature Railway?
The Miniature Railway at Abbeydale has very good facilities. There is a small cafe on site selling cakes, hot drinks, cold drinks and ice creams. The prices are very reasonable. Most drinks and cakes cost £1 – £3. They also have toilets on site, these are single cubicle toilets.
There is no indoor seating available here, so bring an umbrella and come prepared for the weather.
Can you park at the Abbeydale Miniature Railway?
Yes, you can park on site here. There is a small parking field. During busy periods this carpark can fill up and get pretty crowded. Some areas of the car park may be hard to maneuver in and out during busy times. Also be aware that the carpark can get pretty muddy – especially during wet weather. If you are able to find a space and you’re not put off by the mud or crowds, the car park here is free. You can also park on the main road outside the Mini-railway site. The main road is pretty busy so take care.
Accessibility at the Abbeydale Miniature Railway
The Abbeydale Mini Railway have made proactive moves towards ensuring accessibility. Impressively, they even have a dedicated carriage that is wheelchair friendly. If you require this, please contact them in advance. In our view this project is reasonably accessible for people in wheelchairs and families with prams. They have facilities including disabled toilets and baby changing facilities.
However, there are a few accessibility challenges that you need to be aware of:
Firstly, parking could be tricky for wheelchair users. There are no dedicated disabled parking on site. We do recommend contacting them directly if you need special parking, as they may be able to arrange something for you.
Secondly, the site itself is accessible for prams and wheelchairs, but there are some less accessible areas. For example the shop and toilet area is pretty small and may be a little challenging for wheelchair users. What’s more, there is a pedestrian bridge with steep steps and no ramp. This bridge leads to the central lawn area.
Can you buy food and drinks at the Abbeydale Miniature Railway?
Yes, you can buy some snacks and cakes at the Mini Railway site. There is a small cafe serving hot drinks, cakes, ice creams and snacks. The cafe is open when the railway is in operation. The prices in the cafe are very reasonable with most things ranging between £1 – £3. They also sell a few small gifts and toys. BBQs are not permitted on site.
History of the Abbeydale Miniature Railway
Model railways have been a thing in Sheffield as early as 1903 but there aren’t many records. One of the first miniature railways was located in Dore, not far away from the current Abbeydale site. The current site is run by the Sheffield and District Society of Model and Experimental Engineers. They moved to the current site in Abbeydale in 1978.
How does the Abbeydale Miniature railway support the community?
Firstly, the Abbeydale mini railway supports the community by offering a fun and affordable day out. This is a great place for kids to learn about trains and develop a passion for engineering. The entire project is run by volunteers and works on a non-profit model. Money raised by ticket sales supports the continuation and development of the project. They also hold special events and fundraisers to support local charities; especially the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and St. Luke’s Hospice.
