Why visit Gili Air?

Gili Air is a small tropical island paradise located off the northwest coast of Lombok in Indonesia. The island is one of three Gili Islands and is well known for its golden sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere.
One of the main reasons to visit Gili Air is the incredible marine life that surrounds the island. The waters around the island are home to an abundance of colorful fish and vibrant coral reef. You can also take a boat trip to nearby dive sites, such as Shark Point or the Manta Point.
Gili Air is also the perfect place to relax and unwind. You can indulge in a range of therapeutic massages and yoga classes. One of the things we love most about Gili Air is the chilled laid back vibes. Additionally, Gili Air’s lively beachfront bars and restaurants offer an excellent opportunity to socialize and meet new people.
And of course – there are LOADS of amazing hotels on Gili Air!
How does Gili Air compare to the other Gili islands?

There are 3 main Gili islands (around 60km northeast of Bali). Gili Trawangan is the main island and most popular. It is also the biggest Gili island. Gili Meno is the smallest and most tranquil island. There are less shops, restaurants and accommodation on Gili Meno. Gili Air is between the two:
Gili Air is smaller than Gili Trawanagn and larger than Gili Meno. It is also quieter and more tranquil than Gili Trawanagn. Gili Air is also more chilled out and relaxed compared to Gili Trawanagn. People are less likely to charge high tourist prices so you don’t need to barter as hard on Gili Air. Gili Air does still have some nightlife – but not as much as Gili Trawangan.
There are some amazing hotels on Gili Air, but there is less to choose from compared to Gili Trawangan.
What is available on Gili Air?

Before you plan your trip to Gili Air it is worth considering what is available on the island. Firstly, there are a few ATM machines on the island and bank card transactions are accepted in some places. BUT we do recommend bringing plenty of cash to Gili Air. If you struggle to withdraw money there aren’t many options. Furthermore, if you have any specialist needs we recommend bringing things with you. Consider things like medication, dietary requirements, nappies and baby milk. Although there are a few shops on Gili Air – the choice is limited. So plan to bring what you need.
There are no cars or motorbikes on the Gili islands. So the best way to get around is to walk or use a bicycle. This creates a lovely clean and peaceful vibe on the Gili islands. You can rent bicycles for around 50,000IDR per day (roughly £2.50 or $3).
What are the challenges of Gili Air?
Gili Air is genuinely a beautiful tropical paradise. However, there can be some challenges staying on a small remote island like this. Be aware that wifi can be limited or slow on Gili Air. If you rely on internet connection we recommend buying a local sim card with mobile data. Furthermore, the medical facilities are limited on the Gili islands. You can buy some medicines and there are some small clinics on the islands. Also we already mentioned that stock can be limited in local shops. This can be another challenge on Gili Air – so if you do need niche products we recommend bringing them with you.
What is the best time of year to visit Gili Air?

The dry season runs from May to September and is the best time to visit Gili Air. During this time, you can expect clear skies, calm seas, and a warm, sunny climate. The island experiences low humidity and pleasant temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as diving, snorkeling, and sunbathing. The downside of the dry season is that it can be quite busy, with high demand for accommodation and trips.
The wet season runs from October to April and is characterized by rain and high humidity. Although it is not an ideal time to visit the island for beach activities, the wet season can still be a great time if you are looking for a quieter and more relaxed experience. The island is less crowded during this period, and visitors can take advantage of lower prices on accommodation and activities. However, it’s essential to note that the wet season can experience heavy rain and thunderstorms. This can affect travel plans and outdoor activities. Additionally, some dive sites may be closed due to the rough sea conditions.
How do you get to Gili Air?

Don’t miss our in-depth guide – how to travel from Bali to the Gili islands
The best way to get to Gili Air is to take a boat from Padang Bai in Bali. Boats take around 2-3 hours and normally stop at Gili Trawangan before going to Gili Air. Prices range from 230,000IDR – 760,000IDR (£13 – £40 or $17 – $50) per person, one way. You will also need to consider the price of transfer to Padangbai in Bali. We recommend getting a deal with your boat tickets. You can get a transfer for as little as 50,000IDR per person with your tickets. The best boat companies are: Emi Gili transfer. You can book tickets on Klook. Alternatively we recommend the Golden Queen fast boats.
There are common challenges on this journey: rough waters can cause sea sickness. Boats are often delayed and can be slow at times. Padangbai can be intense and scammy – especially when you are returning from the Gili islands.
What are the BEST things to do on Gili Air?
