Why visit Sapa?

Before we dive into our hotel reviews let’s just take a moment to talk about Sapa. Why visit Sapa?

We really love Sapa. There are SO many things to do in Sapa. It is a pretty unique location in southeast Asia. You can clearly see Chinese influence on the culture, the Vietnamese culture – and yet this area retains its own unique culture and charm.

Sapa is a beautiful mountain hill town, located in the north of Vietnam close to the Chinese border. This lovely town is around 300 km northwest of Hanoi. There are also loads of stunning Sapa homestays, pretty rice paddies, beautiful trekking in mountains and valleys and breathtaking waterfalls.

Make sure you visit the beautiful Cat Cat village if you get a chance. Don’t miss the impressive and iconic mount Fanispan (you can take a cable car up this mountain). We absolutely love the tribal H’mong mountain culture and amazing food that you can try near Sapa.

Important things to know before you go

Make sure you are fully prepared for your trip to Vietnam with our Genius Vietnam travel tips

Sapa can actually get very cold in the winter – technically it is still in the tropics but only just! And it is also mountainous. Sapa is seasonal with the coldest winter months being November – February. Some of the homestays and cheaper hostels can get pretty cold at times. Bring extra layers or an extra sheet. It is worth being prepared for a cold climate. ALSO be aware that wifi and mobile data can be quite limited in Sapa – even in some areas of the town. So be prepared to be digitally disconnected at times (actually this may be one of the advantages of Sapa!)
