Achmelvich Bay is a very beautiful coastal area in northwest Scotland. It is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and pristine sandy beaches. Achmelvich is situated between rugged hills and surrounded by turquoise waters. In the distance you can see the unique and beautiful Suilvan towering over other peaks.
Achmelvich has very impressive crystal-clear waters, which shimmer in shades of blue and green, creating a mesmerizing sight. The sandy beaches are soft and golden, inviting visitors to relax, sunbathe, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. This beach has a genuine peaceful atmosphere. Where is Achmelvich bay located?

What is there to do in Achmelvich bay?

Here are some beautiful things to do in Achmelvich:
- Have a BBQ or picnic on the beach: Why not have a BBQ or picnic on the beach? Make sure you stock up in a city before you visit (e.g. Inverness or Ullapool have supermarkets). If you plan to have a BBQ check for local restrictions and never BBQ near anything flammable. Also be careful not to leave any rubbish.
- Wildlife watching: Explore the area for wildlife. Dolphins can be seen along the west coast of Scotland. In the area you can also see a variety of beautiful birds and watch out for deer as well.

- Play on the beach: This is a spacious soft golden sand beach with plenty of space to play games. Whether it’s football, cricket or just building sandcastles – this is a wonderful place for kids and adults.
- Paddle or swim: The water at Achmelvich is impressively clear and beautiful. This creates a stunning turquoise colour in the bay. You can paddle and swim in the water – but be aware it is very cold. Always be careful swimming in the ocean.
- Watersports: Many people come to Achmelvich to do watersports. Be aware that you need to bring your own equipment as there are no rental shops in the area.
- Watch the sunset: As a west facing beach this is a stunning spot to enjoy an ocean sunset. Be aware that sunset time varies dramatically throughout the year. Sunset in the winter is as early as 4pm and in the summer it is as late as 9pm.
What things can you do near Achmelvich bay?

- Old Man of Stoer: Stunning sea stack located a few kilometers north of Achmelvich beach (60m tall)
- Loch Assynt: Make sure to check out the beautiful loch Assynt a few kilometers east of Achmelvich.
- Suilven: You can also visit the impressive Suilven – a spectacular mountain not too far from Lochinver. Be aware that you cannot climb directly to the peak due to the near-vertical sides.
- Stoer Beach: If you love Achmelvich beach you may also be interested in Stoer beach (the next beach to the north)
- Smoo Cave: If you have time head up to Durness on the north coast and check out the amazing Smooth Cave. It costs £10 for a boat tour. Cash only.

How do you get to Achmelvich?

Achmelvich is in one of the most remote and desolate areas of the United Kingdom. So you will need to arrange your own transport to get here and be prepared for a big journey. Make sure your car is topped up and bring plenty of food, snacks and drinks. The best way to get to Achmelvich is to drive to Ullapool (stock up) and then head north for a few hours to Achmelvich.
Be aware that many of the roads are narrow. We highly recommend using offline maps to help you navigate (be aware that mobile phone signal can be weak in this area).
Can you park at Achmelvich beach?
There is a pay and display car park located at Achmelvich beach next to the Achmelvich Youth Hostel. It costs £1 to park for up to 2 hours and £5 to park for 24 hours here.
What facilities are there at Achmelvich beach?
One of the main disadvantages of Achmelvich is the lack of facilities. There are no public toilets located in the area. If you do need to use a toilet you will need to ask in the caravan park or the North Coast 500 pods site.
Are there shops and restaurants at Achmelvich?
This is a very rural area with minimal shops, pubs or restaurants. However there are a few places in the area. Here is a summary of the shops in the Achmelvich area:
- There is a small gift shop located in Achmelvich. Be aware that the opening hours are sporadic. The Tidal Gifts & The Hatch sell sweets and hot drinks. The loaded hot chocolates are amazing!
- There are also some small shops located at the North Coast 500 pods and the Shore Caravan Site
- Further afield in Lochinver you can find some small convenience stores. For examples Inverpark Stores (6km away in Lochinver)
- There is also a lovely restaurant nearby: Delilah’s restaurant and bar (around 6km away in Lochinver)

What is the best time of year to visit Achmelvich bay?

We highly recommend a visit to Achmelvich in the beautiful summer months (May – August is ideal, and ealy summer in May and June is particularly charming!). There are several advantages of visiting during the summer. Firstly at these northern latitudes you can experience very long days with plenty of light to enjoy the beauty of the area. In the summer the temperature is a little warmer (although you do still get plenty of chilly and rainy summer days too!). There is more chance of seeing wildlife in the summer and you can also do watersports in the summer.
On the other hand, if you visit Achmelvich in the winter there can be some very beautiful conditions. On a clear night there is a chance of seeing the northern lights. Also in the winter things are more quiet in the area making it easier to book accommodation.
Is Achmelvich a safe place to visit?
