It is possible to see a wide range of Wildlife in the Taman Tugu hiking area. It is common to see macaque monkeys, lizards and birds on these trails. Be aware that they can also be creatures like snakes around so take care.

Although this is very centrally located in Kuala Lumpur it is also a wild area. Another great thing about the Taman Tugu hiking area is that it’s totally free-of-charge.

There are no tickets or entry permits required to go hiking in this area. The botanical gardens right next to Taman Tugu is also a great spot for hiking in KL.

2 The eco Forest Park (KL Menara tower)

Ok, straight up, this is not the most challenging hiking in KL. You wont get the distance at the ECO forest park – but you will get the beauty here. The ECO forest park is a small jungle Reserve located next to the KL menara Tower. The eco Forest Park has a series of sales and canopy walkways with bridges, observation decks and stairways.

Located right in the center of KL, this is genuinely a remarkable place. It is possible to hear the sounds of the jungle (such as cicadas and birds) and in the background you can hear the typical sounds and bustle of KL City. There are also several points where you can see the KL Menara Tower through the canopy.

One of the main disadvantages of hiking in the eco Forest Park is the price. The other locations that we have recommended in this article are free.

The prices for the ECO Forest park is as follows:

  • Children (6-12 years old) RM5
  • Adults RM40
  • Senior citizens (60 years old+) RM40

Opening hours: 8am – 5.30pm

The ECO forest park operates a dual pricing system with cheaper tickets for Malaysians. We have included the eco Forest Park and our guide to places to go hiking in KL due to the beauty and unique nature of this location. The eco Forest Park is smaller than the taman tegu hiking area.

3 Banana waterfall jungle trek

If you are looking for a more intrepid jungle hike consider Banana Waterfall (also known as Pisang Waterfall). Banana waterfall is not in the centre of KL. However it is very easy to get to Banana waterfall as a day trip from KL. Banana waterfall is located less than 20 km from the centre of KL (the journey is likely to take around 1 hour by road depending on traffic).

Banana waterfall is an impressive jungle Cascade with a reasonably deep plunge pool. The trek to Banana Waterfall is around 2km each way and is likely to take around 30 – 40 minutes each way. Near the start of the trek you actually climb through a tunnel where the river flows under the road. There is a good chance that you will be able to see some of the local Malaysian wildlife here. Watch out for insects, lizards, monkeys, fish and much more.

It is possible to do this hike independently and without a guide. However, we always recommend being very cautious if you do not have experience in the jungle. If you are in any doubt it is recommended that you go with a local guide. To organize a guide contact the Kenali Asia Camp or Pinnacle Outdoor and Travel KL:

Kenali Asia camp: www.kemsedayu.com

Pinnacle Outdoor and Travel KL: info.pinnacle.outdoor@gmail.com

If you plan to visit Banana Waterfall, bring plenty of water and snacks. The trail is rocky and uneven in places. Wear suitable footwear (trainers) and light comfortable clothing for being active in the heat. This is defintely the adventurous end of hiking in KL.

Don’t miss the cultural museum nearby: The Museum Orang Asli Gombak (MOAG).
