Bakewell is a great spot for family walks. Bakewell is a scenic town in the south of the Peak District National Park, famous for Bakewell puddings and surrounded by beautiful rolling hills – this really is a must do in 2026.

We have recommended a range of Bakewell walks to enable you to see and experience the best bits of Bakewell. Each route has something different and the distances vary so there is something for everyone. We have given you a route map to help you navigate. Here are 5 Bakewell walks for families. 

Bakewell walks: 1 Park and river walk 1.3km (0.8 miles)

Bakewell walks river Wye

This is the shortest and most relaxed of the Bakewell walks. This walk is a relaxed stroll along the river Wye and through Bakewell Park and Recreation Grounds. Start at the Granby road car park. Head right until you reach the river. Take the path that runs alongside the river Wye and round the park. Towards the end of the park just before you get to the road there is a great playpark for kids. Walk back along the A6 until you see another path leading towards the Bakewell Cricket Club. Walk back to the car park along Granby Croft. If you want to extend this walk a little, park on Holme Lane instead and walk to Bakewell across the field by the River Wye. 

Bakewell walks: 2 Town tour 2km (1.2 miles)

This scenic 2km walk includes all of the main sights of Bakewell town itself. Park on Holme Lane. Start by walking across the fields by the river Wye towards Bakewell town. Cross the road bridge. On the other side of the bridge turn left and follow the river Wye. Turn right at the Bakewell Love Locks bridge, turn left on Granby road. Turn right along Water Street. Enjoy perusing the shops. When you get back to the main street turn left. Walk along the street – past the Old Original Bakewell Pudding shop (you may want to stop here for a Bakewell pudding and a well earned coffee). Note the Bath Gardens on the other side of the road. At the roundabouts go straight (slightly right) up Church street. Walk up past the church and then turn left. Walk back down past the church and back to Holme Lane through Bakewell. 

Bakewell walks: 3 Agricultural walk 5km (3 miles)

Park on Holme Lane. Start by walking across the fields by the river Wye towards Bakewell town. Cross the road bridge. On the other side of the bridge turn left and follow the river Wye. Cross the bridges over the River Wye up to the Agricultural Centre. Follow agricultural way. Turn left up to Coombs road. Turn right on Coombs road and walk along the road until you see a turning to the Monsal trail on the left. Follow the Monsal trail around 1.5km until you reach Bakewell station. Turn left at Bakewell station. Follow the small back streets back towards Holme lane. 

Bakewell walks: 4 Church and hill walk 5km (3 miles)

Start at Granby road car park and walk along the A6 (Matlock road) towards the roundabouts. Walk up Church street past the church and then turn left along Church Lane. Follow Yeld Road approximately 500m until you reach the public footpath across the fields. Follow the footpaths approximately 1km across the fields until you reach Upper Yeld Road. Turn right and follow the road. Take the public footpath on the left. Follow the wall until you reach the corner. Go diagonally right across the fields. Walk past Peak Trinity church and cross Shutts Lane. Keep going straight following the Alley ways until you reach Yeld Road. Return to the carpark back along the original route.

Bakewell walks: 5 Monsal trail walk 8km (5 miles)

This is the longest of the Bakewell walks that we recommend. Park on Holme Lane. Start by walking across the fields by the river Wye towards Bakewell town. Cross the road bridge. On the other side of the bridge turn left and follow the river Wye. Cross the bridges over the River Wye up to the Agricultural Centre. Follow the public footpath besides agricultural way until you reach Elottholme woods. Turn left and follow the path to Coombs road. Cross the road and follow the Monsal trail. Follow the monsal trail north for approximately 3.5 km. You may wish to stop at the cafe at the Hassop station cafe. Around 500m after this cafe keep your eye open for a left turn. Follow the footpath across the fields and back to Holme Lane.

Bakewell is also relatively close to Ashford in the Water – a serene country village and Monsal Dale, a panoramic valley with a viaduct running across it.
