1 Phra Kanong area

The Phra Kanong is one of the BEST areas to stay in Bangkok for families. This area really is a fantastic family hub with an impressive selection for family friendly activities. The Phra Kanong area has all the city conveniences. You can find malls with kids shops, kid friendly food options and cinemas.

There are also plenty of convenience stores selling nappies, wet wipes, snacks, baby milk and more. The Phra Kanong Area is also well connected with central Bangkok on the BTS Sukhumvit line. Overall this is a great area for families in Bangkok.
What is there to do for families in the Phra Kanong area?

There are loads of activities for kids in the area. Check out the epic indoor play space at Kidzoona at the Gateway Ekkamai Shopping Centre. Zidzoona is an indoor playspace with active, energetic and creative play spaces. You can also visit the Science Centre for Education – a space themed museum. If you’re kids need a run around and fresh air there is a playground at Benchasiri Park.

Don’t miss the Choco Project at SOKO – a chocolate cafe is a sure win with kids. A few kilometers south west you can visit the Pororo Rooftop waterpark – an entire water park situated on the roof of a shopping mall.

2 Khaosan Road area

Another one of our favourite areas to stay in Bangkok for families is Khaosan road. Khaosan road is the most iconic backpacker hub in Bangkok. This is a great place to meet people and enjoy the backpacking vibes. There are plenty of hotels in the area. There are also loads of tour operators ready to hook you up with tours, bus tickets and more. Many buses and tours do FREE pick ups in this area so this is a great hub to get to other attractions around Thailand.
Khaosan road itself can be quite busy, noisy and intense. BUT the surrounding area offers a wide range of accommodation to choose from. For a lovely and quiet area there are lots of places to stay around Samsen Road. Also try Soi Rambuttri (especially the section further away from Khaosan road). This lovely street has shops, tour operators, and local food.

Khaosan road has a reputation for bars, clubs, markets and buzzing nightlife. There is an extensive selection of cheap local Thai food and more expensive western food in this area. You can find lots of convenience stores selling supplies like nappies, wet wipes, baby milk, snacks and more. It is also easy to find kid-friendly food in the area.
One disadvantage of Khaosan road is the distance from public transport. There are no metro or subway stations nearby. So you will either need to rely on taxis, local buses or walking from here.
What is there to do near Khaosan Road for families?

There’s also plenty to do near Khaosan Road. Don’t miss Wat Chana Songkhram Ratchaworamahawihan. This is located at the northwest end of Khaosan road. You can wander around this temple for free. Khaosan road is also a short walk from Phra Sumen Fort. And it is also not too far to walk to the Trok Mor Morning Market and the Bangkok old town.

3 Sukhumvit road area

On Sukhumvit road (near Asok subway station and the surrounding streets) you will find plenty of hotels, shops, and transport connections. This area is a central cosmopolitan hub in Bangkok. It is also part of Bangkok’s business district. Sukhumvit is one of the more expensive and cosmo areas to stay in Bangkok for families.

Sukhumvit road is also a real expat hub. In the area you can find malls, shops, condos and plenty of international food. A short ride westbound on the BTS Skytrain Sukhumvit line takes you to the Siam Station. This is the best stop to get to the central shopping malls in Bangkok.
The main disadvantage of this area is the lack of authentic Thai culture and cheap street food. Being in Thailand you can always find some local food around. But this area is definitely more cosmo than traditional.
What family friendly activities can you find in the Sukhumvit road area?

Sukhumvit is not too far from the Benchakitti Park, Lumphini Park and The Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre (which often hosts activities and exhibitions for families). If you want to do some shopping you can take the BTS Sukhumvit line to MBK, Siam Paragon Mall and Central World Mall. A short ride southeast on the BTS Sukhumvit line takes you to the Phra Kanong area with loads of family friendly activities (Kidzoona, the Science Centre for Education, Imaginia and more)
What are the best hotels in the Sukhumvit Road area?

On average this is one of the more expensive areas of Bangkok. Most accommodation is in the £60 – £150 range. If you hunt around you can find a few places in the £20 – £30 region for accommodation.

4 Ratchathewi and the Siam Square District

This is the cosmopolitan shopping district of Bangkok. In the area you can find several large shopping malls and lots of expensive hotels (especially near Lumphini Park). This is one of the BEST areas to stay in Bangkok for families – especially if you’re planning to do lots of shopping.
It is also a real hub and very well connected. You might expect this area to be super expensive for accommodation. BUT actually, most hotels in the Ratchathewi area are under £50 per night, and there are many places in the £20 – £30 region. Most of the expensive hotels nearby can be found in the Lumphini area.
An advantage of the Ratchathewi area is the public transport. There is a metroline running through this area. There are also plenty of taxis around. A disadvantage of the Ratchathewi area is the lack of temples and authentic Thai culture. Many of the smaller streets and alleys in the area have small stalls selling tasty cheap Thai food.
What family friendly activities are there in the Ratchathewi area?

Nearby you can walk to MBK, Siam Paragon Mall and Central World Mall. MBK is the best mall for small cheap independent stalls and shops. You can buy clothing, gifts, homeware and electrical goods. Central world and Siam Paragon is the best place for brands and chains. All of these malls offer extensive food courts and plenty of food choices.
What are the best hotels in the Ratchathewi area?

5 Chatuchak park area

Chatuchak park is a large beautiful park located to the north of Bangkok. This is a great area for families in Bangkok. Chatuchak park is also very well connected to the rest of Bangkok by public transport. You can also find plenty of shops and a mall in the area. Chatuchak Park is also one of the main transport hubs in Bangkok. It is right next to the Bang Su Central train station. Lots of subway and metro lines converge on this area too.
What is there to do near Chatuchak park?

Chatuchak is one the BEST areas to stay in Bangkok for families. The park itself is very large – a few kilometers across. This is a great place to walk, run and play. There are plenty of paths, flowers, ponds. There are also play parks and you can even swim here. At the south of the park you can visit the wonderful Children’s Discovery Museum Bangkok. This is a great place for kids to explore, play and learn.

At the Discovery museum there are various zones where children can interact and learn about different subjects. Science, geology and technology themes create an exciting and innovative experience for kids. This Discovery museum is ideal for kids between 2 – 12 years old.

6 Pinklao area (The Thonburi District)

Pinklao is a great place to stay in Bangkok if you hope to avoid the classic tourist and expat hubs. There is some very good value accommodation in the area. In the area you can get a lot of space for your money – always a win with kids!
Pinklao has a wonderful fusion of cheap local street food and more expensive restaurants. You can pretty much find anything in the area. Whether you are craving sushi, a burger or just a good coffee. Pinklao seems to have it all. There are also lots of convenience stores selling nappies, wet wipes, milk, snacks and more.
The main disadvantage of the Pinklao area is the distance from the center. Pinklao is located on the west side of the Chao Phraya River. By subway the closest stop is Bang Yi Khan. To get to the central district of Bangkok (Sukhumvit road) you need to ride the MRT Blue Line for around 45 minutes. There are plenty of taxis in the Pinklao area. Expect to pay around 100 baht – 150 baht to get to the center of town.
What is there to do for families in the Pinklao area?

There is a large mall called Central Pinklao with many brands and chain stores. This mall also has a large supermarket and extensive food court too. Just down the road you can also find a large Tesco Lotus supermarket. There is a small kids soft play space above Tesco Lotus.
Near the Pinklao area you can visit the Indy Night Market – a great spot for cheap amazing Thai food and good vibes. Pinklao has a real buzz. There is lots of local food and markets. This area is not far from the MRT subway line (Bang Yi Khan station). Also don’t miss the Taling Chan floating market (saturday and sunday morning only)
