Before we visited Jordan, we had many questions like this. We were planning an epic trip to the Middle East, and among many questions, we really wanted to know whether it is safe to explore Jordan with a baby.
In this article, we are going to address this question and also give you some tips and advice for traveling around Jordan with a baby. Spoiler alert! We had an amazing and safe trip around Jordan with our kids. We traveled around Jordan with a 6-month-old baby, a 3-year-old boy, and a 6-year-old boy. Our entire family loved the trip.

Is Jordan Safe to Travel with a Baby?

The short answer is “yes”! Jordan is reasonably safe to travel with a baby. Many people travel safely around Jordan with kids, including babies. However, there are some specific risks and considerations that you need to be aware of, which we will discuss in a moment.
Travel always comes with inherent risks; therefore, we always recommend researching the local situation before your trip. We found the UK FCO website to be a very accurate and reliable source of up-to-date travel safety information. Also remember to make sure your baby has all of the vaccinations they need before you travel. 1 Getting Around Jordan with a Baby
If you are planning to visit Jordan with a baby, there are some challenges that you need to be aware of. Firstly, if you’re planning to travel around Jordan using taxis, there are safety concerns you need to know about. Taxis in Jordan do not have baby seats, and in fact, most taxis don’t even have working seat belts on the back seat. When we asked drivers about this, they were very casual and dismissive. In some cases, it may be possible to pull the seat belt buckle up from underneath the back seat to add a little safety. We were also concerned about the speed of the highways around Jordan; they are crowded, and cars rarely give each other sufficient stopping distance. Road safety is one of the biggest concerns if you’re traveling in Jordan with a baby.
If you are concerned about road safety, we recommend looking into a car rental deal. Some local car rental companies can include a baby seat with your rental deal. However, we do recommend contacting them in advance to organize this and check on any additional charges. Car rental in Jordan generally starts at around 35JOD per day. Also, be aware that parking space is quite limited in the Amman Old City, so you will also need to consider your accommodation. If you’re planning to drive in Jordan, don’t forget to obtain an international driver’s license before your trip.
Another way to travel around Jordan with a baby is to use a bus. There is only one bus company that operates in Jordan, connecting all the main cities and tourist attractions. The company is called Jett, and they do not charge for babies on these buses. You do need to do a little research here. Booking a bus in Jordan is not necessarily straightforward.

TOP TIP: Bus journeys around Jordan can be slow and challenging (4 -5 hours holding a baby in a cramped space?!). Remember to bring toys, baby snacks and entertainment for the road.
2 Climate in Jordan for Travel with a Baby
Considering the climate in Jordan is crucial when traveling with a baby. During the summer months, especially from June to August, Jordan experiences extreme heat and very dry conditions. The sun’s intensity is particularly high, especially during the hottest hours of the day, from 10:00 a.m. until around 3:00 p.m. It’s essential to cater to your baby’s needs in this intense climate. If you’re traveling in Jordan with a baby during the summer, make sure they drink plenty of fluids. Your baby may need to feed as much as twice the usual amount. The heat can also make a baby groggy and drowsy. We found using a sling to carry our baby around and having an umbrella to keep her covered from the sun to be essential. On the other hand, if you’re traveling to Jordan in the winter months, especially from December to February, it can get quite cold, especially in the desert and mountain areas. If you plan to visit Petra during these months, we recommend bringing plenty of warm clothing for your baby.

3 Food Safety in Jordan with a Baby
Feeding kids, especially babies, in Jordan can be challenging. This depends on how you feed your baby. If you are traveling with a baby just prior to weaning them onto solids and they are purely breastfed, keep in mind that Jordan is a conservative country, and breastfeeding in public is not culturally acceptable. However, if you cover up using a scarf, breastfeeding in public is acceptable. It takes a little practice to get used to this, but it’s well worth it if you are breastfeeding a baby in Jordan.
If your baby is on formula, we recommend bringing a sufficient supply of your preferred formula with you, as it can be hard to purchase baby milk in Jordan, especially if you’re committed to a particular brand. Also, consider traveling with a spare backup bag of formula in case you have any problems with your main bag.
For babies already weaned onto solid foods, there are plenty of good options in Jordan. You can find healthy, fresh, baby-friendly food around Jordan, and bakeries are very common. Local markets around Jordan offer fresh fruits, like sealed fruit (e.g., bananas) for your baby. The main thing to avoid is street food or food that has been left open and can accumulate bacteria. There are also plenty of convenience stores around Jordan selling packaged snacks, as well as dried fruits.
4 Accommodation in Jordan with a Baby

Baby friendly or not?
It’s important to recognize that there is not a lot of baby-friendly accommodation in Jordan. 5 star hotels may have SOME facilities for families with babies. But let’s be fair, most of us can’t afford to stay in 5 star hotels.
Your average hotel in Jordan will not offer baby-proof rooms. They generally won’t have baby-friendly facilities or amenities such as cots, baby gates, and high chairs.
Hotels in Jordan often have tile floors, which can be a risk for babies, especially if they are learning to sit up or stand up. Windows are often not lockable (watch out if your baby or toddler can climb).
If your hotel can’t provide a cot, you may need to bed-share with your baby, which presents some risks. Co-sleeping with a baby is generally not recommended for safety reasons. If you can find a lightweight travel cot or a hotel that can lend a cot, this is the safest option.
There is one other genius option. We have found it very helpful to travel with a mosquito net tent for a baby. This creates a protective barrier around our baby when we are sharing a bed with her, protecting her from creepy crawlies. Furthermore, a mosquito net tent provides a protective surface between your baby and the mattress or bedding, which is more hygienic and safer. Mattresses and bedding can be grubby in Jordan!
You can buy mosquito net tents for babies very cheaply, and they are small, lightweight, and compact to travel with. Having a mosquito net tent for our baby meant that we could stay in much cheaper budget accommodation and still protect our precious little one while she sleeps.

So, is it safe to travel around Jordan with a baby? The quick answer is “yes”. In general, it is safe to travel around Jordan with kids and babies. However, there are specific risks you need to be aware of and some challenges for family travel in Jordan. If you’re aware of the risks and you prepare well, you can minimize the rest and maximize your chance of a safe and happy trip for you and your family.
