Activities & things to do in John O’Groats

1 Visit the John O’Groats Signpost

“Come all this way to see a sign post?!” I hear you say. Yeah, but it is a famous sign post. This iconic signpost marks the distance to various destinations, including Land’s End, New York, and other far-flung places around the world. Surely that’s worth a look. And of course you should also make sure you pose here for the obligatory selfie.

2 Visit the Duncansby Sea Stacks

Duncasby Stacks Scotland

Visit the stunning cliffs at Duncansby Head and witness the breathtaking views of the North Sea and the Duncansby Stacks. This is a short walk or drive east of John O’Groats village. There is a small car park near the lighthouse. From Here you can take a stroll along the beautiful windswept cliff line and enjoy epic scenery. It is around 1.5km from the lighthouse to the sea stacks. Just walk south along the path and make sure to watch out for puffins nesting in the cliffs. The Sea Stacks are very impressive and unique and well worth visiting.

Also this walk can be a little muddy at points. Wear good shoes and remember a good windproof layer and rain coat – this area is quite exposed and can get cold even in the heights of summer. It is possible to do the walk with a wheelchair or pram but a few sections may be tricky. As ever, take care near cliffs.

3 Visit Dunnets Head

Dunnets head scotland

A little known fact about this area: John O’ Groats isn’t the real north tip of mainland Britain. It is the northwestern tip and the farest point from Land’s end. BUT if you want to reach the actual northernmost point of mainland Britain you need to take a short drive up to Dunnets head. This is the northern tip of Britain. Even if you’re not bothered about geographical tick boxes, this is actually a very beautiful viewpoint and is worth a visit just for the scenery. Also don’t miss the beautiful Dunnets beach to the west of Dunnets head. This is a stunning, clean, golden sand beach.

4 Wildlife Spotting

Duncansby cliffs

The north coast of Scotland is a wild and beautiful area and you can see a range of plants and animals throughout the year. For example, keep your eye out for puffins nesting in the cliffs near the Duncansby Stacks. Take a wildlife tour or go birdwatching to spot seals, puffins, dolphins, and a variety of seabirds in their natural habitat.

5 Take a Ferry to the Orkney Islands

If you want to go further north why not catch a ferry from John O’Groats and spend a day exploring the beautiful Orkney Islands, known for their Neolithic sites and rich history. Be aware that this crossing can be pretty rough. Take motion sickness pills if you struggle with sea sickness. Keep an eye on the weather for crossing conditions. Ferries actually operate from Thurso (a few kilometers west of John O’ Groats)

6 Drop by the Old Pulteney Distillery (Wick)

You’ve not been to Scotland unless you have visited a distillery. That can be your excuse anyway! If you’re exploring the North Coast, why not take a guided tour of the Old Pulteney Distillery in nearby Wick and learn about the production of one of Scotland’s finest single malt whiskies. And it wouldn’t do to visit and not at least take a sample.

7 Visit the Old Keiss Castle

The northeast coast of Scotland is lined with many old castles. Some are mere ruins. Others are intact defense towers. And yet others have a more magical and majestic presence – formerly the home of wealthy aristocrats in the region. We highly recommend visiting some of these historical beauties. The Old Keiss Castle (like many of these castles) is free to visit and take photos from outside.

8 See the Duncansby Lighthouse
