Things to Know Before You Go

Wadi Musa view of Petra

Before you read on, we wanted to give you some context to help you understand the geography and layout. It’s not possible to stay in a hotel in Petra itself. However, there are a few hotels located right by the entrance of the Petra Archaeological Park. The main town next to Petra is called Wadi Musa (which translates to “Moses Valley”). This town is fairly basic and underdeveloped. The town has a handful of restaurants and cafes, and there is also a small supermarket. Wadi Musa is a hilly town with some very beautiful views. Apart from that, there’s not a lot to see in the town itself. If you want to stay in Petra, you’ll actually need to stay in one of the hotels in Wadi Musa.

Why Petra?

The Petra Archaeological Park is best known for the impressive Treasury, one of the Wonders of the World. The Treasury is situated around 2 km inside the Archaeological Park (there is a lovely 2 km walk through a rocky canyon called the Al Siq). If possible, we recommend finding a hotel that is close to the entrance of the Petra Archaeological Park. This will make it much simpler and more convenient to enter the park in the morning and explore Petra at the best time of day.

How do you get to Petra?

Jett amman petra bus

If you’re planning to stay in Petra, you’re probably wondering about the best way to get there. We’ve put together an in-depth, step-by-step guide on how to get to Petra from Amman. Here is a summary of the main points: Firstly, it’s important to recognize that there are no trains or local buses available in Jordan. There is only one bus company that operates between Amman and Petra, and this company is called Jett. Because it is the only bus company serving this route, buses can get booked up quite far in advance.

We recommend booking two or three weeks in advance if possible. You can book tickets online through their website. A one-way ticket costs 10 JOD for an adult (around £11 or $13). It is the same price for children (2 – 10 years old). If you’re not in Jordan at the time of booking, you may need to book this journey as a tour with Jett, in which case the ticket costs 18 JOD each way (around £20 or $25). Alternatively, you could arrange a private taxi from Amman to Petra, which is likely to cost around 100 JOD (£110 or $130).

How Long Should You Stay in Petra?

If you’re hoping to make the most of your visits to Petra, we highly recommend that you spend at least two days and one night. It is possible to visit Petra in a single day as a day trip from Amman, Jerusalem, or Tel Aviv. However, if you choose to visit Petra on a single day trip, it’s likely to be a very long and tiring day, and you won’t have much time at the Treasury. What’s more, you’ll also be visiting during the busiest hours. By spending at least one night in Petra, you can get up nice and early in the morning and see the Treasury at the best and quietest time of day.

Why Stay in a Luxury Hotel in Petra?

Petra Marriott 2

Petra is genuinely one of the most impressive and magnificent things to see in the Middle East. However, it’s also a very challenging and intense environment. We strongly recommend that you book a comfortable and luxurious place to rest. By finding a clean, luxurious, and comfortable hotel, you can prioritize rest and recovery and make the most of exploring this marvelous and unique attraction.

We already mentioned that the Wadi Musa area is fairly underdeveloped. If you’re able to book a stay in a luxury hotel, you also get the advantage of having excellent on-site facilities such as a restaurant, breakfast, swimming pools, and they may also have a tour desk offering guided tours and transport connections.

On average, hotels in Jordan offer excellent value for money. Your money goes a lot further in Jordan than it does in other countries. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of splurging on a luxurious five-star hotel, Jordan offers the perfect opportunity to experience 5-star luxury and service at 3-star prices.

TOP TIPS for Booking a Luxury Hotel in Petra

Main entrance to the Petra Archeological Park

There are a few important things you need to know if you’re looking for luxury hotels in Petra.

1 Consider location

Firstly, it’s important to consider the location of your hotel. In some cases, luxury hotels are situated right at the gates of the Petra Archaeological Park. Other hotels are situated high up on the hills of Wadi Musa, overlooking the town. These hotels offer great views, but you will need to take a taxi to reach Petra. In some cases, hotels may offer free shuttle bus services to the entrance of the Archaeological Park. This can be very helpful if your hotel is not close to the Archaeological Park; however, you will need to go at the scheduled time.

2 Check taxes and fees

Secondly, it’s important to recognize that hotels generally charge additional taxes and fees on top of the standard room price. Platforms like Agoda and booking.com should be able to tell you how much you will need to pay in addition to the room price. It’s also important to recognize that some luxury hotels will want to take a deposit when you check in. For more information about this, we recommend that you contact the hotel directly.

3 Check what’s included

Thirdly, it’s important to be clear about what is included with your booking. Not every luxury hotel in Petra includes a free breakfast with your stay, so if this is important to you, make sure that it is included in your booking. In some cases, you may be able to pay extra to get a free cancellation policy with your booking. We recommend doing this if you are unsure of your travel dates.

4 Contact your hotel with requests

And finally, if you are booking a hotel with the hope of staying in a specific room, for example, you’d like a room with beautiful views or a bathtub, it’s important to contact the hotel in advance to check that you will be allocated a room with your preferred features. One way to do this is to download a picture of the room you’re interested in and then send the hotel an email with the picture attached.
