Where are the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs located?

The San Kamphaeng Hot Springs located approximately 25km to the east of Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. The journey from Chiang Mai to the hot springs by road is around 40 km and is likely to take around 45 minutes – 1 hour. 

The hot springs are open daily from 7am – 6pm 

How do you get to the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs?

Take a bus

The cheapest way to get to the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs is to take a bus. You can take a yellow songthaew bus from the road by the Ping River next to the Warorot Market. The Songthaew bus takes around one hour and it costs 50 baht each way – bargain! 

Here is the bus time table:

Chiang Mai (Warorot) – San Kamphaeng 7.40am, 11.40am, 3.40pm and 6.30pm

San Kamphaeng – Chiang Mai (Warorot) 6.00am, 10.00am, 2.00pm and 5.00pm

(check the timings of the last bus with the driver to be sure)

Rent a bike and ride

The cheapest and most convenient way to get to the Hot Springs is to rent a motorbike and drive. This does however rely on you having the confidence and experience to ride a motorbike in Chiang Mai. You can rent a motorbike around Chiang Mai town for around 150 baht per day. Always ride carefully and make sure you wear a helmet. Furthermore, make sure that you are qualified and insured to ride a motorbike in Thailand. 

Take a taxi

Another way to get to the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs is to take a taxi. The two-way taxi journey is likely to cost around 1,000 baht including waiting at the hot springs. The most common way to get taxis in Chiang Mai is to use the grab or bolt taxi app. However, for longer journeys this is not recommended. One of the problems is that drivers are unlikely to respond to Long journeys. Therefore, we recommend negotiating with a driver in Chiang Mai and asking them to give you a price for the whole day including two-way transfer and waiting time at the hot springs. 

Rent a car and drive

A very convenient way to get to the Hot Springs is to rent a car and drive. There are plenty of car rental companies in Chiang Mai. You will need to be appropriately qualified and insured to drive a car in Thailand. Car rental in Chiang Mai starts at around 700 baht – 1,000 baht per day depending on the provider, the season and the availability.

Admission to the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs is relatively cheap. Entry costs 100 baht for adults, 50 baht for children. The mineral pool costs an additional 50 baht for adults and 30 baht for children. You can also take a private bath for around 200 – 300 baht.

There are lots of things to do at the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs. You can go to see the source of the hot springs with some geothermal fountains spurting into the air. At the top of the hot springs the water is very hot and you can buy eggs which can be boiled in the water and eaten. As you walk down through the hot spring park you can follow a little hot river and there are areas where you can sit down and dip your feet in the geothermal water.

The whole area has nice relaxing vibes. You can buy snacks and drinks in this area and enjoy relaxing. The gardens are also very beautiful to explore – filled with colorful tropical plants. 

There is also a mineral swimming pool (50 baht for adults and 30 baht for children) and there is a kids play park too. There is an on-site restaurant serving local Thai dishes and refreshing drinks. You can also take private mineral baths for around 200 – 300 baht.

Muang On Caves are located very near the hot springs. If you like the hot springs you may also enjoy the Grand Canyon waterpark in Chiang Mai. If you’re interested in culture and history don’t miss the Wiang Kum Kam temples. Also make sure you visit the epic Sticky Waterfall (located a few hours north of Chiang Mai). Oh yeah, if you’re going to be in Pai don’t miss the Sai Ngam hot spring – this is one of our favourite hotsprings in the world! It is a very beautiful warm river.
