Top tips for traveling Ho Chi Minh with kids
Here are a few top tips for traveling in Ho Chi Minh with kids. Firstly, the best way to get around it is to use local taxis. The best way to get a local taxi is to use one of the taxi apps in Vietnam. The main taxi apps are Grab and Gojek. Grab is a little bit more expensive. It is possible to use both taxi apps at the same time. Expect to pay around 30,000 – 100,000VND for most taxi journeys in Vietnam. A big advantage if using an app is the fixed pricing. You can also opt to pay the driver directly in cash. This is a super convenient way to get around.
WATCH OUT on the roads. They are supremely busy and packed with motorbikes. Try to cross at pedestrian crossings or traffic lights where possible. Supervise kids carefully by roads.
Another thing to be aware of in Vietnam with kids is the challenging currency. You are unlikely to need to pay less than 10,000VND for anything (this is roughly £0.30 or $0.40). The large notes can make it very difficult to work out exchange rates and figure out how much change you should be expecting. Always check your change carefully.
Ho Chi Minh an amazing destination for cheap and delicious street food. The street food in Vietnam is actually quite family friendly. Local dishes are not too spicy. We recommend Pho (noodle soup) and Banh Mi – baguettes stuffed with tasty fillings such as meat, veggies and egg.
1 An Nguyên
Price range: £10 – £20
An Nguyên Is one of the cheapest family hotels in Ho Chi Minh. This humble guest house offers clean, simple budget accommodation in an excellent central location right in the heart of District 1 in Ho Chi Minh.
At this hotel you can get a budget quadruple room for around £10 per night. This room has a double bed and bunk beds with a private bathroom. This room also includes air conditioning. An Nguyên is a very cheap budget hotel. It offers clean and reliable accommodation but don’t expect any special facilities or amenities. This is just a cheap price for you and your family to rest your head in Ho Chi Minh.
An Nguyên is right next to the Bui Vien walking street – which is one of the main hubs for bars, restaurants, street food and backpackers.
2 Classy Indochine – The Riverside
Price range: £20 – £30
The Classy Indochine hotel is one of the best budget family hotels in Ho Chi Minh. This hotel offers a spacious quadruple room with a large comfortable double bed and bunk beds. The quadruple family room is excellently furnished with an en-suite bathroom, air conditioning and vintage interior design theme with tapestries and bright vibrant artwork. Large windows allow plenty of natural light.
The bright interior design theme gives the rooms a lot of character and style. As a low budget option don’t expect amazing family facilities and amenities at the Classy Indochine. There is not a check-in desk at this property so you will need to do a self check in.
The Classy Indochine is located in the Binh Thanh district of Ho Chi Minh around 3km from the Bui Vien walking street (around 30 minutes walking). This is slightly out of the way of the main attractions in Ho Chi Minh. This hotel offers a lot of space for the money – and we are impressed with the quadruple room (it barely costs more than the double!) This is one of the best hotels for families traveling on a budget.
3 Grand Lee Hotel
Price range: £20 – £50
The Grand Lee hotel is one of the best family hotels in Ho Chi Minh if you are looking for excellent value for money but you’re not too bothered about being right in the centre of town. On the lower end of the budget range, this hotel offers excellent value for money. The Grand Lee hotel is a clean hotel with very good facilities and amenities. They offer an all important laundry service – very important for families and there is a 24 hour reception desk with lovely helpful staff.
We are particularly impressed with the Family room with lake View. This is only a little bit more expensive than the standard family room but offers a lot more. The family room with lake View is a quadruple room with a large double bed and two single beds. This room allows some privacy with separation between the double bed and the two single beds. It also offers a beautiful view of the river. There is an ensuite bathroom including a bathtub; This is a huge advantage especially if you were traveling with younger kids who don’t enjoy taking a shower.
Overall this is a very good hotel in Ho Chi Minh for families. The main disadvantage is the distance from the centre of district 1. If you’re planning to spend a lot of time exploring the tourist attractions in District 1, be prepared to rely on taxis or public transport to get around (the journey to the centre of town is around 8km).
4 Calista Sia Gon Hotel
Price range: £25 – £150
If you are looking for stylish family hotels in Ho Chi Minh that offer very good facilities and an excellent location, then the Calista is probably the best option.
The Calista Sia Gon Hotel offers a lot for the money. This hotel has an onsite restaurant and offers a great breakfast (check that it is included when you book). They offer a laundry service, 24 hour check in desk and a lift (great if you’re traveling with toddlers!) Rooms are spacious and beautifully furnished with large comfortable beds, air conditioning, minibars and ensuite bathrooms. Some of the rooms also offer amazing city views with floor-to-ceiling windows.
The Family Suite at this hotel is great value for money. It has a large comfortable double bed and a single bed and is able to sleep up to 3 people. It also has large windows allowing plenty of natural light. There is a flat screen TV, minibar, air conditioning and an ensuite bathroom. The bathroom also has a shower and bathtub – great for cleaning grubby kids. Overall this is a great option if you want the real “hotel experience” without paying 5 star prices.
The Calista is also in an excellent location right in the heart of town. It is next to the bustling Benh Thanh market and a short walk from the Bui Vien walking street.
5 Leiden Homestay & Cafe
Price range: £50 – £150
Leiden Homestay & Cafe is one of the best family hotels in Ho Chi Minh. This excellent hotel offers the perfect balance of comfort, luxury, location and value for money. This property has an amazing cafe on site serving gourmet food and drinks. Rooms and suites at this property are spacious, comfortable, clean and very stylish. We love the Muji interior design theme with striking features such as red frames and artwork.
The family suite at Leiden is very impressive. Rooms have large windows allowing plenty of natural light. This spacious open plan suite can sleep up to 5 people and also packs a load of extra features such as comfortable furniture, a breakfast bar and a spacious ensuite bathroom.
The Family Suite has two large double beds and there is also a sofa which can be converted to a bed. Although this suite offers the space of an apartment – it is worth noting that it doesn’t offer separate private rooms (a feature of some of the other properties we recommend in this article).
Leiden is also in an excellent location in downtown Ho Chi Minh. This hotel is around 1km from the Bui Vien walking street (roughly 10 minute walk) If you’re looking for a TOP CLASS stay in Ho Chi Minh in the mid-budget range then Leiden is the place for you.
6 Orchids Saigon Hotel
Price range: £50 – £260
Orchids Saigon Is one of the best mid-range family hotels in Ho Chi Minh. This beautiful hotel has an indoor swimming pool with a city view, a bar, fitness centre and spacious stylish rooms and suites. This beautiful hotel also offers a decadent and high-quality buffet breakfast. check that the breakfast is included with your room when you book.
There are two options for families: Firstly the Family Suite with City View can sleep up to 4 people. This spacious and decadent suite is beautifully furnished with large windows and wonderful city views. There is an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub. The family suite with city view allows privacy with adjoining rooms and there is additional furniture to create the perfect relaxing space for you and your family.
The Orchids Suite with City View has a large double bed and a single bed and can sleep up to 3 people. The Orchids suite has a spacious living room area with a comfortable sofa and flatscreen TV. There is also a large ensuite bathroom with a stylish curved bathtub and a separate walk in shower.
The Orchids Saigon is also in a great location District 1 of Ho Chi Minh – a short walk from many of the BEST Ho Chi Minh attractions (the war remnants museum, the Reunification palace, book street and the Bui Vien walking street).
7 Au Lac Charner Hotel
Price range: £70 – £230
Au Lac Charner Hotel is a very stylish 4 star hotel located in the heart of district 1 in Ho Chi Minh. This awesome hotel rocks a light vintage interior design theme and also has a super cool rooftop swimming pool and terrace area. Many of the rooms include an afternoon tea on the roof as part of the package (check when you book).
An awesome buffet breakfast is also included. As a 4 star hotel, Au Lac offers excellent facilities and amenities for families.
For families we recommend the De La Somme Family room. This beautiful room has a double bed, a single bed and an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub.
In our opinion this would not be the best hotel if you are traveling with toddlers or younger kids. However if you’re traveling with older kids this is a very good option.
8 Norfolk Mansion Luxury Serviced Apartments
Price range: £130 – £350
The Norfolk Mansion is one of the BEST value 5 star family hotels in Ho Chi Minh. This hotel offers spacious and excellently furnished apartments and fantastic facilities and amenities for families. There are also two on-site restaurants, a fitness centre and laundry rooms available.
The fitness centre is particularly impressive with two very well-equipped rooms, a steam room and separate gender saunas available.
There is an indoor kids play space, which is perfect for younger children. There is also a roof top swimming pool – loads of fun for families. The spacious 3-bedroom apartment sleeps up to 5 people With two large double beds and one single bed. There is an en-suite bathroom including a bathtub, a spacious balcony, a living room and dining room and a fully equipped kitchenette. This is a great option for any family that values space, facilities and privacy.
The Norfolk Mansion is also located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh, very close to all of the central attractions in the city. In our opinion the apartments at Norfolk Mansion are extremely well equipped, spacious and clean.
9 Fusion Original Saigon Centre
Price range: £130 – £400
Fusion Original is one of the most stylish and unique family hotels in Ho Chi Minh – offering decadent accommodation right in the heart of District 1. This striking Hotel has a very unique abstract interior design theme. Fusion has rich bold colors and stylish modern art to create a truly unique ambiance.
Fusion also offers excellent facilities and amenities. Connected to a shopping mall Fusion offers convenient access to shops and restaurants. There is a rooftop swimming pool and you also have access to a fully equipped fitness centre offering a wide range of equipment and classes.
We absolutely love the reload Pantry concept. The reload pantry is a free snack and drink station available on every floor. This 24-hour service offers fruit, pastries and drinks so you can have a snack at any time of the day. you might also be interested in the decadent Nest Lounge. You can either pay for a day pass or select a suite which includes Nest access.
Fusion has a wide range of rooms and suites to choose from offering style, comfort and decadence. Families may be interested in the 2-bedroom executive suite. This impressive family friendly suite has two separate rooms, one room has a spacious and comfortable double bed and the other room has two single beds. Large windows allow beautiful views and there is also a living room with comfortable furniture and an ensuite bathroom.
10 InterContinental Residences Saigon
Price range: £300 – £800
The Intercontinental residences Saigon is one of THE BEST 5 star family hotels in Ho Chi Minh. The InterContinental offers spacious apartments, amazing facilities and an excellent location right in the center of Ho Chi Minh a couple of blocks from the iconic Reunification Palace, book street and the Benh Thanh market.
The InterContinental has a calming minimalist city sleek interior design theme. Most of the suites are able to accommodate large families – in some cases they can accommodate up to 7 people. We love the two bedroom apartment. One room has a spacious double bed and the other room has two twin beds. There is a stylish and excellently equipped kitchen and a spacious living room with comfortable furniture. There is also an ensuite bathroom with a freestanding bathtub. Large floor to ceiling windows afford breathtaking city views.
The InterContinental has excellent facilities including a spa, bar, outdoor swimming pool, on-site restaurant and fitness suite. The main disadvantage of this hotel is the high price range. The InterContinental is one of the most expensive 5 star hotels in Ho Chi Minh. It is rare to find suites available for anything less than £250 per night at this property.
Overall this is still an amazing hotel. The Intercontinental residences Saigon offers the comfort and convenience of home with the luxury of a decadent city center 5 star hotel. The facilities and amenities in this property are absolutely outstanding.
