What is the Umeda Sky Building?

Sky bridge escalators from under tower

Umeda Sky Building is one of Osaka’s most striking landmarks. It stands 175 meters tall, and what makes it really unique is that it’s actually two separate towers joined at the top by the Floating Garden Observatory. The whole thing looks a bit like a futuristic gateway, and the design is pretty unusual—especially for a city filled with modern skyscrapers.

It was built in 1993, designed by architect Hiroshi Hara, and originally planned as part of a bigger project called the “City of Air.” That vision didn’t quite happen, but the Umeda Sky Building still stands out as one of Osaka’s most iconic structures.

Unlike some of Osaka’s taller buildings, Umeda Sky Building isn’t just about offices—it’s a proper visitor attraction, with restaurants, bars, and even a small cinema inside. But the real highlight? The Kuchu Teien Observatory, where you can step outside and take in incredible views of the city.

We even spotted a helicopter flying at the same height as us when we visited! It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’re standing on top of the world, and if you time it right, you’ll get one of the best sunset views in Osaka.

How to Get to Umeda Sky Building

Getting there is pretty straightforward, and if you’re coming from Umeda or Osaka Station, it’s an easy walk. Here’s how to do it:

Step-by-Step Directions:

  1. By Metro: Take the Midosuji Line to Umeda Station and exit from Exit 5. From here, it’s about a 10-minute walk.
  2. By JR Train: If you’re using the JR Osaka Loop Line, get off at Osaka Station and take the Central North Exit. Again, it’s around 10 minutes on foot.
  3. By Hanshin or Hankyu Railway: If you’re coming via Umeda Station (Hanshin/Hankyu), follow the signs to Grand Front Osaka and head north.

Walking Route from Osaka/Umeda Station:

Walk to Umeda
  • Once you’re outside the station, head towards Grand Front Osaka—you can’t miss it, as it’s one of the biggest shopping complexes in the city.
  • Walk past Grand Front Osaka, keeping to the left-hand side.
  • As you walk along the pedestrian walkway you can see the tower (which makes navigation pretty easy!)
  • building itself is hard to miss once you’re heading in the right direction.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

The Kuchu Teien Observatory is open every day from 9:30 AM to 10:30 PM (last entry at 10:00 PM).

If you can, we highly recommend visiting around sunset. Osaka looks stunning from up here as the city lights flicker on, and the sky turns shades of orange and pink. It’s one of the best sunset spots in the city, and if you time it right, you’ll get to see Osaka in both daylight and at night.

How Much Does It Cost?

Here’s the good news—you don’t have to pay to enjoy some of the best parts of the building!

  • The 39th floor is completely free to visit, and you can already get amazing views from here.
  • The famous sky escalator bridge (which connects the two towers) is also free—and honestly, it’s worth coming just to experience this.
