Koh Phangan Is best known for its full moon beach parties. However, in recent years Koh Phangan has become a very popular destination for long-term travelers, digital nomads, expats and families. Backpackers are now visiting Koh Phangan and staying for longer – and holiday makers are increasingly enjoying this lovely island.
For each of the areas to stay in Koh Phangan we will recommend some things to do in the area and we will also share some of the best places to stay.

Haad Rin bay
On the south east tip of Koh Phangan is the popular Haad Rin area. This is one of the best areas to stay in Koh Phangan for nightlife – especially the full moon party, the half moon party and new years party. Haad Rin beach has plenty of accommodation, shops, convenience stores and restaurants. The main disadvantage of Haad Rin is accessibility. There is one main road to the Haad Rin area and this main road is very steep in sections.
It is possible to use a rental bike to get to Haad Rin but take care on these steep roads. The beach is pretty nice at Haad Rin and there are a couple of viewpoints in the area. Due to the location of Haad Rin on Koh Phangan island (exposed section of the east coast), this area is prone to large waves and strong currents. Always take care swimming and watch out for the red flags.

Baan Tai beach
Baan Tai is one of the best areas to stay in Koh Phangan for families. This is located on the south of Koh Phangan. Baan Tai is located between Haad Rin and Thong Sala. The beaches in this area are hit and miss. There are some lovely clean sections of beach. The water stays shallow for a long way – especially at low tide. We love the fact that you can enjoy a good sunrise and sunset in this area – at some sections you can almost see the sunrise AND sunset over the water.
There are some lovely coffee shops, cafes and restaurants in the Baan Tai area. There are also some nice things to do with kids in this area. Check out the Retro Mountain Jungle Club – a top spot in Koh Phangan for families. You may also be interested in the Vintage Night Market – a lovely outdoor food market with a kids play park. You can also visit sunset walk – this place has a skatepark and a kids playground. A short ride into town there is a soft play place called The Messy House.

Thong Sala town
Thong Sala is the main town in Koh Phangan. It is home to the main ferry terminal and has plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and a bustling night market on Saturday evening. Thong Sala is one of the most convenient areas to stay in Koh Phangan. It is central and anything you need is pretty close. There are some bigger super markets in Thong Sala.
You can book tickets and tours here. And there are plenty of places to relax and enjoy. This is also an easy location to flag a taxi and travel to other areas of Koh Phangan. There is plenty of cheap local street food around, there is a fruit market and you can also find plenty of tasty western food options too. The main downside of Thong Sala is the lack of a good beach and nature. If you’re looking for a dreamy stay in paradise, Thong Sala should not be top of your list.

Hin Kong Beach
The west coast of Koh Phangan has all the hippy vibes. This is the best area for coffee shops, vegan food and western style cafes and bakeries. Hin Kong Beach is a long beach located to the south of the west coast. It is closest to Thong Sala and also offers some cheaper accommodation in the area. Hin Kong is a great place for watching the beautiful Koh Phangan sunsets. There is also a scenic sandbar in the area.
Don’t miss Charlie’s Restaurant. A great place for a meal or a refreshing cocktail. Hin Kong beach doesn’t have much going on inland. There is one road running along the beach with some nice places to stay. But there is not really a town here as such. Hin Kong beach has a nice balance between accessibility and beauty. It is only a short journey to the shops and restaurants in Thong Sala. But it is also a beautiful natural area with chilled vibes.

Haad Yao & Haad Salad beach
Haad Yao is located on the west coast of Koh Phangan and is a great area to enjoy the stunning sunsets. This is a small town with a white sandy beach. There are some lovely restaurants and coffee shops in the area. Don’t miss the impressive Pura Vida cafe in Haad Yao. This is an excellent spot for an all day breakfast. They serve super fresh tasty pancakes, burgers, fruit shakes and more. Just north of Haad Yao beach is Haad Salad beach. Haad Salad has very similar vibes and style to Haad Yao.
The main difference is that Haad Salad is smaller and a little closer to Chaloklum. If you choose to stay in Haad Salad or Haad Yao we recommend considering car or bike rental. Both beaches are lovely but slightly disconnected from the rest of the island. So if you want to explore Koh Phangan, having your own wheels is recommended.

Mae Haad Beach
Located on the north west tip of Koh Phangan Mae Haad is one of the most beautiful areas to stay in Koh Phangan. Mae Haad beach is best known for the small island and sandbar. People walk to this island at low tide along the sand bar. You can also rent Kayaks in the area to explore.
Mae Haad is a great location to enjoy sunsets and there is a resort on the beach serving food and drinks. Mae Haad does not have much of a town and the area itself is actually quite remote. If you do plan to stay in Mae Haad consider using car or bike rental to access other parts of Koh Phangan. If you don’t choose to stay in Mae Haad we definitely recommend a visit.

Chaloklum is one of the best areas to stay in Koh Phangan. This lovely town has the optimum balance between developed and peaceful. Chaloklum is the second largest town in Koh Phangan. It is located on the tranquil north coast and has a pier, several diving schools and lovely clear waters. Chaloklum also has several shops, cafes, restaurants and a lovely market on Sunday evening.
You can find plenty of nice cheap local food in the area and also some international restaurants too. Chaloklum is very convenient for accessing Bottle Beach and Paradise Waterfall. Don’t miss the Rittisak Muay Thai Gym. Chaloklum is well connected with Thong Sala by a relatively direct road across the middle of the island. There are plenty of amazing places to stay in and around Chaloklum.

Haad Khom beach
Located to the east of Chaloklum is the peaceful and remote Haad Khom beach. This is one of the nicest beaches on Koh Phangan. There is one road leading to Haad Khom. This road is pretty steep in sections. You can access Haad Khom by motorbike – but the steep hills are challenging. Ride carefully. Haad Khom beach has lovely clear waters and trees along the beachfront for shade. There is also some lovely reef around Haad Khom – perfect for snorkeling.
This area is quite remote. If you love trekking this is also an excellent area. There are no shops, cafes or restaurants nearby. If you plan to stay on Haad Khom beach we recommend having a car or motorbike rental. Haad Khom beach has regular taxi boats which run to Bottle Beach. Boat drivers may also be willing to take you to Chaloklum.

Bottle Beach
Bottle Beach is a beautiful remote beach located on the North coast of Koh Phangan. This is one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan. Along the beachfront there are several chilled out restaurants serving refreshing drinks and food. There are also a few resorts offering accommodation on Bottle Beach. Bottle Beach is one of the best areas in Koh Phangan if you are looking for a beautiful relaxing Beach holiday away from civilization.
This area is very nice for swimming, snorkeling and trekking. There are a couple of beautiful viewpoints in the area. The best and most practical way to get to Bottle Beach is to take a taxi boat from Haad Khom beach (east side of the beach). Taxi boats sail roughly once an hour. If you get to Haad Khom Beach and you cannot see a boat you just need to wait. Boats cost 150 baht per person each way.

Bottle Beach 2 Bungalows is located right on Bottle Beach. Accommodation is very simple and relatively affordable. In a location like this don’t expect loads of facilities. Thong Nai Pan beach
Thong Nai Pan beach is a secluded paradise in the most remote corner of Koh Phangan. This area can be accessed by road (through the Than Sadet National park). Thong Nai Pan beach is around 15km from the nearest towns by road – a journey that is likely to take around 20 minutes by car. Thong Nai Pan beach is a great place to stay if you just want to chill out in the area and you’re not interested in exploring the rest of Koh Phangan.
There are several shops, cafes and restaurants in the area. There are also some lovely luxurious resorts along the Thong Nai Pan beach. Thong Nai Pan is close to the Than Sadet waterfall. You can also get to Bottle Beach by road from Thong Nai Pan. Thong Nai Pan beach is one of the nicest beaches in Koh Phangan. This lovely curved bay has panoramic jungle hills, palm trees and clear turquoise waters.

Staying safe in Koh Phangan
We also want to throw in a little bit of advice about staying safe in Koh Phangan. Many people are attracted to Koh Phangan by the beautiful beaches and waters. However, you need to be aware that there are some very dangerous jellyfish in this area. Especially during the wet season.
Also, some of the beaches can experience large waves and strong currents making swimming hazardous. Always be careful if you are planning to swim in the ocean.
If you are planning to go hiking in Koh Phangan watch out for dangerous insects and snakes. Some of the jungle paths can be hard to navigate. We recommend using a phone with an offline map and GPS capacity.
