TOP TIPS for booking hotels in Amman

Treasury Jordan the backpacking family

1 Book close to the Old City area

If you’re looking for the best hotels in Amman, we highly recommend booking somewhere that is located close to the Old City. The Amman Old City is situated to the west of the Amman Citadel. Sha’aban Street & King Faysal Square Street are the main streets in the Amman Old City.

The advantage of booking in this area is the availability of food and transport. There are plenty of small market stalls, cafe shops, and restaurants in this area. This is also a great area to catch taxis and buses. We really enjoyed staying near the old town; this area has a lovely vibe and plenty of things to see and do.

2 Be aware of the hills

It is important to recognize that Amman is actually quite a hilly city, so things that look close on the map may actually be quite challenging to walk. For example, if you’re staying in the Amman Old City, there is quite a steep and challenging walk to get to the Citadel. So remember, distances on a map can be misleading here.

3 Check taxes & extra charges

It is also important to recognize that many hotels do not include taxes in the listed hotel price, so some properties may look cheaper than they actually are. It is important to make sure you check the price that is inclusive of taxes and charges. If you book your hotel using booking.com or Agoda, hotels should state the additional amount that you will need to pay in tax.

4 Consider breakfast & food options

Food in Amman is cheap and readily available, so if you end up booking a hotel that does not include breakfast with your stay, you should find it pretty easy to get local food nearby for great prices. There are plenty of bakeries, cafes, restaurants, and shops around town.

5 Consider the size of the property

Many of the hotels in Amman are small, private, independent hotels. The advantage of small independent hotels like this is a more personalized service with a unique experience. Small independent hotels tend to offer more character and charm and have an intimate ambiance. However, if you are looking for a larger brand name hotel with better facilities, there are a couple of big luxury hotels, and we have included the best luxury hotels in this article.

6 Check whether you get a private bathroom

Finally, if you’re planning to book a budget hotel in Amman, it is important to recognize that you may need to make a few compromises. For example, most budget hotels offer private and twin rooms for around £20 to £30 per night. However, at this price, you are unlikely to have a private bathroom. It is very rare to find private rooms under £20 per night. If you are really hoping to travel on a budget, then we recommend that you look at dormitory rooms. We have recommended a wide range of budget hostels in this article, many of which include dorms and private rooms.
