Ho Chi Minh is an awesome but very intense City. We recommend making sure that you are well prepared.
Firstly, the Vietnamese currency can be quite confusing. Banknotes are in very large denominations making it quite hard to work out exchange rates and check that you are being given the correct amount of change. don’t be pressured or rushed, make sure you take time to check your change carefully. Furthermore, it is very easy to withdraw money in Ho Chi Minh using ATMs. There are plenty of ATM machines around the City allowing you to withdraw money very easily. We recommend using a card that has a low international withdrawal charges and we also found agribank to be very fair with the foreign withdrawal fees.
In general, people in Vietnam have a very good level of English and can normally understand spoken English well enough to help you. We do recommend downloading Google translate onto your phone. One of the amazing features on this app is the ability to download languages offline. This will enable you to communicate efficiently and quickly with locals.
There is an abundance of cheap delicious street food readily available in Ho Chi Minh. We absolutely love Vietnamese street food. Expect to pay between 30,000VND and 90,000VND for most street food in Ho Chi Minh. Bahn Mi (french style baguettes), Pho soup (noodle soup) and BBQ meats and fish are all very popular and affordable street food dishes in Ho Chi Minh.

What is the best way to get around in Ho Chi Minh?
If you are staying in the central district of Ho Chi Minh it is possible to walk around between the main attractions. Another way to get around in Ho Chi Minh is to use local taxis. You can either flag a taxi at the side of the road and agree on a price.
Alternatively, you can use one of the taxi apps to book taxis online. In Vietnam the two main taxi apps are Grab and Gojek. Grab is a little more expensive than Gojek. To use a taxi app in Vietnam just get a SIM card with some Data, download the taxi app from your app store and register for an account using your local phone number and email address. Once you are set up and allow the app to get your location, you can order taxis very cheaply and conveniently. The app sets a fixed price for the journey taking the stress out of bartering with a driver. taxi prices are reasonably cheap in Ho Chi Minh.
Expect to pay around 30,000VND For a short local journey. It is likely to cost around 150,000VND for a taxi journey across the city. It is also worth knowing that tours are very cheap to book, they can normally be booked online in advance or booked through a local tour operator. At this end of the budget range don’t expect lots of sophisticated facilities and amenities, this is a place to rest your head and get a good night’s sleep. The Saigon cozy house and coffee is a great option for a solo traveler or a couple on a budget. They only offer shared dorm rooms with bunk beds. There are not any private rooms available at this property.
The only option is a mixed shared 6 bed dorm. This is not a great choice if you are looking for privacy or the security of having your own private room. Furthermore, be aware that this hostel only offers a shared bathroom.
Overall this is one of the best low budget hostels in Ho Chi Minh. Clean, calm and comfortable dorm hostel with beds typically costing around £5 per night.

If you’re looking for a beautiful property at the low end of the price range then checkout Lovenote Home Studio. This small hotel offers a lot of charm and character for the money. It is beautifully surrounded by trees with its own quaint Garden area. This hotel has a traditional design for you with Asian artwork and fixtures. The style of this lovely little hotel really reminds you that you are in Vietnam. – it almost feels like a small homestay.
As a small property there are not many rooms available. You can choose between the double room and the twin room. The rooms are clean, comfortable and stylish and include a private bathroom and a balcony.
The staff at Lovenote Home Studio are very friendly, helpful and welcoming. This makes a big difference to the quality of your stay, especially in a small property like this. Lovenote studio is located around 10 – 15 minute walk from many of the central attractions in Ho Chi Minh. Overall this is one of the BEST hotels in Ho Chi Minh for budget.
3 Classy Indochine – The Riverside
Price range: £20 – £30
If you’re looking for a stylish place offering character and spacious rooms at the low end of the budget range, then check out Classy Indochine. This hotel offers a vintage interior design theme with tapestries and bright vibrant artwork.
The rooms at this hotel are spacious and comfortable with large Windows allowing plenty of natural light. The bright interior design theme gives the rooms a lot of character and style. As a low budget option don’t expect amazing facilities and amenities here. There is not a check-in desk at this property. You will need to do a self check in.
You can choose between the spacious double sweet or a quadruple room with a private bathroom. The quadruple room is a great option for a family or larger group. There is one spacious double bed and a bunk bed (two single beds). The Classy Indochine is slightly out of the way of the main attractions in Ho Chi Minh.
This hotel offers a lot of space for the money – and we are impressed with the quadruple room (it barely costs more than the double!) This is one of the best hotels for families traveling on a budget.

The 60 INN is one of the best hotel in Ho Chi Minh for value. At the low end of the budget range it is normally difficult to find a place that offers style, cleanliness, comfort, great facilities and an excellent location. 60 INN Saigon is an exception. This hotel offers the best value for money in Ho Chi Minh.
Rooms are clean, simple and well furnished. all rooms include air conditioning, a private bathroom and they even offer a private kitchen with a stove and refrigerator. This is very impressive for a property at this price range, especially in such an excellent location.
The main disadvantage of this property is the fact that you can only get double rooms. Therefore, this property is not a great option for families or larger groups.
The family that run 60INN are absolutely lovely and very willing to welcome and help guests. This creates an enjoyable and relaxing stay. Overall we highly recommend 60INN – especially if you are travelling on a lower budget but still want something high quality in a great location.
5 DDA hotel
Price range: £20 – £120
DDA hotel offers great value for money and an excellent option for families. Rooms and suites at this hotel are spacious, stylish and clean. There are double rooms, triple rooms and quadruple rooms available.
All rooms have air conditioning and private ensuite bathrooms. In some cases you may also be able to get a room with a bathtub. rooms are stylishly and simply decorated with subtle artwork and a light color scheme. beds are spacious and comfortable offering a great night sleep.
Another advantage of DDA hotel is the excellent location in the centre of Ho Chi Minh. This property is very close to all of the main attractions in the centre of Ho Chi Minh. You will notice that there is a very big price range at this hotel, we recommend keeping your eye out for discounts and deals at this property.
In all honesty, at the full price we do not think this hotel is necessarily worth it. However, they regularly have deals and discounts making this excellent value for money as a property.

This spacious open plan suite can sleep up to 5 people and also packs a load of extra features such as comfortable furniture, a breakfast bar and a spacious ensuite bathroom.

This hotel has a very good range of rooms to choose from. However, it is worth noting that none of the rooms have a bigger capacity for larger families. This hotel is able to add a cot to your room free of charge, however you will need to let them know in advance.
They can also add an additional bed for an extra fee. The hotel des arts also offers outstanding 5-star facilities. Whether you want to relax at the bar with a drink or enjoy the rooftop swimming pool, this hotel offers everything you need for a relaxing and decadent stay. There is also a fully equipped fitness center and restaurant on site.

Suites are spacious with a minimalist city sleek interior design theme. We love the free standing bath tubs and large floor to ceiling windows allowing amazing city views whilst you relax. Many of the apartment-style suites are able to accommodate large groups, in some cases they can sleep up to 7 people! Separate rooms allow privacy and space. This hotel also has excellent facilities including a spa, bar, outdoor swimming pool, on-site restaurant and fitness suite.
The main Downside of this hotel is the high price range. It is rare to find suites available for anything less than £250 per night.
