When is the best time to see Cherry Blossom in Osaka?

Before you read on – make sure you pick the right time to visit. Blossom season is high season in Japan so book your trip nice and early (at least 6 months if possible). Make sure you have booked flights and reserved your accommodation. The start of blossom season can vary a little from year to year. If your trip can span 2 – 3 weeks in April you should experience peak blossom season. Based on our recent experience: Late March is too early for Blossom – you may see a few buds starting to show colour – but not enough for those iconic blossom season shots. Blossom really comes In Bloom early April Starting with the white blossom Pink and red blossom takes another week or two. The blossom generally falls by the end of April.
Map of the BEST places to see Cherry Blossom in Osaka
1. Osaka Castle Park – Classic and Unmissable

If you only have time for one hanami spot, Osaka Castle Park should be it. With over 3,000 cherry trees surrounding the historic castle, this is the iconic Osaka blossom experience. The contrast between the delicate pink petals and the towering white walls of the castle makes for an incredible backdrop – and there are plenty of angles to get those castle-blossom views – both around the park and also in the square immediately around the castle itself. The Nishinomaru Garden area is one of the most popular spots within the park. This is a beautiful spot if you’re serious about photography and want some stunning view of the castle framed by cherry blossoms. It does get busy, so if you want a prime spot, you might want to arrive early.
Entry: The park is free; Nishinomaru Garden has a small entrance fee ¥200
Evening illuminations: Check the schedule, as the castle and garden are often beautifully lit up at night.
2. Kema Sakuranomiya Park – Riverside Beauty
For a more relaxed and scenic hanami experience, Kema Sakuranomiya Park is ideal. This park stretches along the Okawa River and has paths lined with a canvas of beautiful pink cherry trees. It’s an easy place to take a walk or even rent a bicycle and ride under the blossoms.
One of the best ways to experience the sakura here is by boat. There are river cruises that offer a unique view of the trees reflected in the water, and if you go at sunset, it’s absolutely magical. If you’d rather stay on land, bring a picnic and sit by the river—it’s much quieter than Osaka Castle Park but just as beautiful.
Best way to experience it: Walk or take a river cruise
Pro tip: The park is long and spacious, so it never feels overly crowded.
3. Osaka Mint Bureau – Exclusive and Unique

This is one of Osaka’s most special cherry blossom experiences—but there’s a catch. The Osaka Mint Bureau only opens its gates for one week a year during peak cherry blossom season. It’s famous for its late-blooming yaezakura, a variety of cherry tree with double-layered petals, giving them a fluffier and more dramatic look.
Since this is a limited-time event, it can get very busy, but it’s completely worth it if you’re in town at the right time. Unlike other cherry blossom spots in Osaka, you can’t picnic here, but the sheer variety of blossoms (over 100 types!) makes it a must-visit for photographers. We also love the atmospheric lanterns lined along the path here.
Entry: Free!! Yep the best things in life really are free! Since it’s only open for a short period, check the official Mint Bureau website for exact dates before planning your visit.
4. Expo ’70 Commemorative Park – A Sprawling Blossom Wonderland

For those who prefer a more spacious and natural setting, Expo ’70 Commemorative Park is a fantastic choice. Located in northern Osaka, this huge park was once the site of the 1970 World Expo, and now it’s home to over 5,500 cherry trees spread across its vast grounds.
Because of its size, it never feels too crowded, even during peak season. There are also Japanese gardens, small lakes, and walking trails—so if you want to combine blossom-viewing with a leisurely stroll, this is the place.
Entry: ¥260 for adults, ¥80 for children
Best feature: It’s big enough to find a quiet spot away from the crowds. This one is quite a jouney so it’s best if you’re actually staying in the area.
5. Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park – Off-the-Beaten-Path Blossoms
If you’re looking for a quieter hanami spot, Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park is an excellent choice. This park was originally designed for the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition and still maintains beautifully landscaped themed gardens from around the world. While not as famous as Osaka Castle it is still a very beautiful blossom spot. We love the blossom surrounding the pond – great for more scenic peaceful photography.
Best for: A quiet picnic or a relaxing afternoon stroll
Bonus: The park also has tulip gardens that bloom around the same time!
6. Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine
For something a little different, consider visiting Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Osaka’s oldest Shinto shrines. During cherry blossom season, the traditional vermillion-colored bridges and shrines are beautifully framed by sakura, creating a stunning contrast. This really is one of the most scenic spots if you’re looking for those classic Japan blossom season shots for insta! Entry: Free of charge. This one is a long way south of Osaka centre – so best if you’re actually staying in the south.
7. Nara Park

Ok, this one is in a neighbouring town – you can easily get here in a day trip from Osaka. Nara is famous for the bowing deer (there are literally thousands of free roaming deer around the park and town). It is also a great place for trails, parks, ponds, temples and beautiful Japanese gardens. In our view – Nara is one of the BEST places to enjoy blossom in Japan. Yes it’s popular. Yes it does get crowded. But you can still find space and get that iconic Japanese blossom experience. Take care – the deer can get enthusiastic (especially if your travelling with young kids – watch them carefully). The whole town and park is free to explore – so just stroll around and enjoy the blossom. This was genuinely one of our favourite blossom experiences in Japan and we have visited this area a couple of times over the years.
