Can someone else queue up for you?
Already thinking of getting a friend or family member to queue for you? Unfortunately, this is strictly not allowed. They will only issue a registration number to people who register in person. There is, however, one exception to this rule (at the discretion of staff on the day). If you are a family with a young baby, you may be allowed to show a photograph of your baby when you arrive at the registration desk. The local staff are likely to issue a registration number for your partner and other family members.
Avoid the whale shark queue in Oslob – step by step guide

The only way to skip the whale shark queue in Oslob is to book a free slot on the official Facebook Whale Shark Watching Reservation page. There are several similar pages on FB so it can be confusing – use the link in this article to make sure you find the right page. It is free to reserve a slot, and if you are successful, you can just turn up at the start of your reservation window. YES you will still need to wait a little – but no painfully early starts or hours of queuing!

The process is not necessarily straightforward, so we strongly recommend that you follow these steps to book your spot:
1. The first step to avoid the Whale Shark Queue in Oslob is to send a message to the Facebook page as early as possible on the day before you plan to see the whale sharks. (Ideally, this message could be sent just after midnight. Alternatively, get up nice and early and send your message in the morning.)
2. The next step is to keep a careful eye on your phone throughout the morning of the day before your trip. The Facebook reservation office normally opens around 8-9 a.m., and you can expect a message between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. As soon as you get your message, it is important to reply with all of the details.
3. You will need to send some information before they can reserve the slot for you. (For each person in your group, you will need to provide the name, date of birth, nationality, gender, and a contact phone number.)
4. Once you have sent the relevant information, keep an eye on your phone in case they require any more details. Assuming they are happy with all of the information you sent, you will be sent a confirmation of your booking slot.
5. Once you have your confirmation, that’s it! You have a reserved slot, and all you need to do is show up around 15 minutes before your booking window the following day.
If you have a booking slot, what do you do on the day?

If you have managed to successfully reserve a booking slot, there is a slightly different process on the day.
You need to show up around 15 minutes before your reservation slot. When you arrive you will see a special reservation tent (to the left-hand side of the registration area). You need to go to this tent and wait in a queue at the desk. When you get to the front of the queue, the staff will ask to see your Facebook reservation message, and they will also ask to see a copy of your passport (a photograph on your phone should suffice). Once your documents have been verified, they will then give you a registration number.

You can then go to the normal reservation area and wait for your number to be called to go and make payment. It is free to reserve a slot, and the cost of the experience is the same (500 pesos per person). After you have paid, you will then need to keep an eye on the screen for your number to be called. (This normally takes around one to two hours.) Once your number is called, you can get a life jacket and head down to the beach. You will then need to give your number to a member of staff on the beach and wait for them to allocate a boat to you.
Things to do while you wait
When you are waiting for your boat, you can rent fins (normally 200 pesos). You can also rent a GoPro. There is a free baggage storage area, and you can find several cafes in the area where you can buy a coffee or breakfast.
Do you need to stay in Oslob to see the whale sharks?

Reserving a free slot on the Facebook reservation page means that you can stay further from Oslob. For example, if you’re planning to travel from Cebu City, you don’t need to wake up as early to travel to Oslob. However, there are only a limited number of Facebook reservation slots available, and they are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. So, there is no guarantee of getting a spot on Facebook. It is important to consider this when you are planning your trip to Cebu. If possible, we recommend staying in the Oslob area and spending a couple of nights. Not only does this allow you to wake up later, but Oslob is also a very beautiful area to stay and explore.
