Where is Wat Pha Lat?

Wat Pha Lat is located close to Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. It is located on the east side of the hill in the Doi Suthep-Pui national park just over 5km to the west of the center of Chiang Mai old city (GPS coordinates 18.79990, 98.93456). The temple itself sits at around 600m above sea level. The start of the monks trail leading up to Wat Pha Lat is located at the end of Pilgrim’s Path road to the south of Chiang Mai zoo. The trek starts at 18.79764, 98.94224.
How long is the monks trail hike?

The total distance up and down the monks trail is around 2.4km (around 1.5 miles). From the start of the Monks Trail to Wat Pha Lat the route climbs approximately 160m (525 feet). This is a moderately challenging hike, especially in the heat. Most of the route is covered by trees. This hike could be further extended by continuing up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

How long does it take to climb the Monks trail Chiang Mai?

At a steady pace, it is likely to take around 30 – 40 minutes to hike up the monks trail. We recommend planning at least an hour to enjoy exploring the Wat Pha Lat temple. The return journey is likely to take less time. The route is steep in places with uneven terrain. It is easily possible to do the whole trek and explore the temple in a single morning or afternoon.
What is Wat Pha Lat like?

Wat Pha Lat (วัดผาลาด สกิทาคามี) is a Buddhist temple with many buildings, pagodas and pavilions. Several features make Wat Pha Lat particularly unique and attractive: The location on a jungle mountain affords excellent views over Chiang Mai. There is a river running through the temple site with pools and small waterfalls. Wat Pha Lat also has several buildings of different styles and ages. There is an old well and many statues, shrines and images of Buddha. Several areas of Wat Pha Lat are showing signs of age and deterioration, giving the temple an ancient mysterious intrepid feel. Wat Pha Lat is a functioning Buddhist temple with monks living on site.
What is the history of Wat Pha Lat?

The name “Wat Pha Lat” means “temple on the steep rock”. Legend has it that Wat Pha Lat was established around the 14th century when King Kue Na was bringing remnants of Buddha from Sukhothai (over 200km south of Chiang Mai) to be enshrined at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. According to the story, the King and his elephants stopped at the site of Wat Pha Lat to rest.

YES. You can see monks walking up and down the Wat Pha Lat monks trail. The best time to see monks walking along the trail is between 7am – 11am (Earlier in the morning you are likely to catch them coming down the trail. Later in the morning you are likely to see them trekking back up the trail to the temple).
Is the monks trail suitable for children?

The monks trail is suitable for children and is a very enjoyable family activity. The monk’s trail is not suitable for prams or pushchairs. The trail is uneven with rocks and roots and is pretty steep at points. Towards the end of the trail there is a short set of stairs to climb up to the temple. However, the route is suitable for families with children.
Do you need a guide to climb the monks trail Chiang Mai?

No you do not need a guide to trek up the monks trail Chiang Mai. Most people trek up the Wat Pha Lat monks trail independently and without a guide. The trail itself is pretty easy to follow and the start of the trail is well marked. If you do wish to walk up the Wat Pha Lat monks trail with a guide we recommend asking in a travel agent in Chiang Mai (there are loads of small tour offices in the town).
How much does it cost to climb the monks trail Chiang Mai?
You can trek up the monks trail Chiang Mai for FREE. You do not need to purchase any entry tickets or permits to trek up this trail. Entrance to Wat Tha Lat temple is also free although guests can make a donation.
What facilities are there at Wat Pha Lat?
There are public toilets at Wat Pha Lat. The temple is also very close to a road if you are unable to walk back down the monks trail. We also recommend bringing your own food and drinks to Wat Tha Lat. At present it is not possible to buy food and drinks at the temple.
What is the best way to get to the start of the Monks trail Chiang Mai?

The start of the monks trail leading up to Wat Pha Lat is located at the end of Pilgrim’s Path road to the south of Chiang Mai zoo. The trek starts at 18.79764, 98.94224. This location is pretty quiet and there are not many cars or taxis driving by. The start of the trail is well marked. However, it is a long walk from the Chiang Mai old city. If you do not have your own transport, the best way to get to the start of the monks trail Chaing Mai is to arrange a tax. We recommend using the Bolt app for the best prices. The Grab app is also good but more expensive. Alternatively you could arrange a price with a red songthaew bus driver in the town.
What should I bring for the Monks trail hike?

We recommend wearing light comfortable loose fitting clothing. Remember to dress respectfully when you visit the temple (shoulders and knees covered). We also recommend good footwear as the trail is uneven and steep in places. Trainers (sneakers) are recommended rather than sandals or flip flops. It is also important to bring plenty of water and be aware that you will not be able to buy food or drinks at the temple.
When is the best time to trek up the Monks trail Chiang Mai?
We recommend trekking up the monks trail Chiang Mai early in the morning before it gets too hot. This also increases your chance of seeing monks on the trail.
