What are Chiang Mai family hotels like?

Chiang Mai hotels fall into two categories. Some hotels are in the center of the old city and close to the hustle and bustle. Others are on the outskirts of Chiang Mai and are more luxurious and peaceful. If you are looking for luxury resorts, you are going to need to travel a little way out of the old town.
There really is something for everyone in Chiang Mai. We have also tried to include a range of hotel styles and prices. Every property that we review is family friendly.
We are not being paid by any of these hotels. However, we have included links to help you book your stay. Please click on our links as we earn a small commision at no extra cost to you. This keeps us writing epic family travel articles to help you in the future.
Top tip: If you are using websites like booking.com to find rooms and you have young children who do not need their own bed, we recommend getting a quote for a room without entering the children who are traveling with you. Your quote will probably be much cheaper. You can then contact the property to request an additional cot. Gotta love our family budget tips.
Some things to know about Chiang Mai family hotels
Hoping to stay in the Chiang Mai old city? Then don’t miss our TOP PICK Chiang Mai old city hotels

- Try to book Chiang Mai hotels early. Although there is always plenty of accommodation available in Chiang Mai, some of the best places get booked up early. Lots of Chiang Mai hotels allow you to cancel your booking for free up to a certain date.
- Be aware that even when you are paying top dollar in Thailand, Thailand can still encroach on your sanctuary. Some things are very hard to avoid even in the best rooms in Thailand. You may get the occasional waft of bad drain smells. Also, you will probably get the odd unwelcome visitor like mosquitoes, ants or even geckos.
- Transport around the area is very cheap and convenient. Just jump in a tuk tuk, agree a price and off you go. There are also car taxis if tuk tuks feel a bit too crazy. You can also find very cheap rental of bicycles and motos. There are lots of very cheap tour operators in the old town who can book you onto trips and tours – this is much cheaper than pre-booking trips before you get to Chiang Mai.
- In Chiang Mai you can find hostels as cheap as £10 per night for private family rooms. Cheap hostels like this will happily welcome families and are a great option if you are backpacking with your family on a low budget. In this article we will focus on Chiang Mai hotels that have a high level of comfort, luxury and style and are suitable for family holidays.

Family friendly: Good
Pastell Oldtown hotel welcomes families with children of any age. The rooms are fairly baby proof although not soundproof. The floors are laminate – a pretty useful material with a leaky baby. We love the fact they have board games for kids. The staff are super helpful and friendly – this is one of the most important things when you are looking after little ones. There is a lift – which is bliss after a long day of family adventures. There is a swimming pool with a shallow end, so that you can take your little ones for a dip. They can offer free cots to children up to 5 years old… this sounds like a pretty big cot! They also have baby safety gates.
Location: Excellent
This hotel is perfect if you want to be situated in the hustle and bustle of the old town. We love the fact that you can just stroll out to the night markets and epic street food. The Pastell Oldtown hotel is situated right next to Wat Phuak Hong and the beautiful Nong Buak Hard park. If you are looking for tranquility then check out the Anantara Chiang Mai Resort. (INSERT LINK HERE)
Facilities and dining: Good
The Pastell Oldtown hotel offers a good range of facilities including a swimming pool and lots of in room features like a mini bar, safe, air conditioning and toiletries. And of course, who could manage without the all important free wifi? The main drawbacks: Some of the rooms are quite small compared to other Chiang Mai family hotels. Although breakfast is included with your room the buffet does not have as big a range of options compared to other Chiang Mai Family hotels. But the options they do have are pretty tasty!

Family friendly: Excellent
Families love the The Phra Singh Village hotel. They can include a free baby cot on request. The restaurant is equipped with high chairs for babies. They have a swimming pool with inflatable toys for kids. The rooms have laminate floors. This is good for wiping up baby leaks. If your little one is taking their early wobbly steps this can be a hard surface for them to fall on compared to a carpet. The rooms are reasonably baby proof – but be aware that there are french windows that lead on to a balcony in the rooms. The rooms are sound proof, ideal for travelling with a baby. Overall this is one of the best Chaing Mai family hotels.
Location: Excellent
We think this is the best balance of quality and proximity to the old town. Other luxury Chiang Mai family hotels are further out of town. Phra Singh Village hotel is conveniently located in the old town right next to Wat Phra Singh (golden temple). In the old town you will also find lots of great markets and street food.
Facilities and dining: Excellent
Phra Singh village offers an excellent range of facilities compared to other Chiang Mai family hotels. Facilities include free bike use, fitness suite, swimming pool, spa, bar, fast free wifi and lots more. The pool is on the small side for a property of this size and at some points in the year guests find it to be a little cold.

Full review of Shangri-La hotel

Family friendly: Outstanding
We have featured the Shangri-La hotel due to their outstanding range of activities and provision for families with children of all ages. We love the range of arts and crafts activities for kids. They run 45 minute sessions twice a day (10am and 2pm). There’s also an ecotour for kid’s 4-12 years of age. They offer a Muay Thai family boxing class. There is a playground, Kids Club and children’s pool.
Shangri-La Hotel can include free cribs (cots) on request. It is also possible to request extra beds for older children at an additional cost. Most importantly they offer a babysitting service (Is that a sigh of relief I hear? Don’t worry no one is judging! Seriously – every parent needs some TLC). The babysitting service costs 300 baht (just under £8) for 1 child per hour. For each additional child they charge 150 baht per hour.
The Shangri-La hotel has the best provision for children out of all of the Chaing Mai family hotels that we have reviewed.
Location: Very good
The Shangri-La Hotel is situated less than 1km from the south east gate of the old town. It is also a very short walk from the 3D Art Museum – Art in Paradise. This would be a great place for kids to explore and take some awesome family photos.
Facilities and dining: Excellent
The Shangri-La Hotel has an impressive range of facilities. Spa, fitness suite and an impressively large swimming pool. There is even a freaking water slide. Sorry that probably impresses us a bit too much! They also have four different restaurants on site offering cuisine from around the world. Some of the food is genuinely fine dining. The breakfast buffet is pretty epic too.
4 Anantara Chiang Mai Resort

123 Charoen Prathet Road, T.Changklan, A.Muang, Chang Khlan, 50100 Chiang Mai, Thailand
Why do we love the Anantara Chiang Mai Resort?
This is genuinely one of the most luxurious resorts you will find in Chiang Mai. And it’s family friendly. The property is beautiful and situated right next to the River Ping. It is just over 1km from the old town where you will find street food and night markets. The Anantara Chiang Mai Resort is the type of place you might want to book if you are on a honeymoon, celebrating an anniversary or just want to treat yourself and your family. Guests love this place. You know you are onto a winner when some of the most negative reviews include someone complaining about the weak toilet flush. And someone else complaining about the noise of insects outside. Yep. The noise of the insects. In North Thailand.

This lovely resort is nestled amongst beautiful trees giving you a sense of seclusion and closeness to the beautiful nature of North Thailand. Full review of the Sireeampan Boutique Resort and Spa

Family friendly: Very good
The Sireeampan Boutique Resort welcomes families. They welcome children of all ages. They offer a free cot for children under 3 and this can be set up in you room. They have soundproof rooms so you don’t need to worry about disturbing anyone else. They offer a babysitting service so that you can take a much deserved break. We think this would be a great place to stay, especially with older kids who can appreciate the awesomeness of their surroundings!
Location: Very Good
The Sireeampan Boutique Resort is located to the north west of Chiang Mai. It is around 4km from the old town. Unless you fancy a long walk, you would need to grab a tuk tuk to pop into town. This is very easy to do in Chiang Mai as they are all over the place. We love the fact that the Sireeampan Boutique resort is very close to the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. Perfect for families who love to trek or even jog in the jungle!
Facilities and dining: Excellent
The Sireeampan Boutique Resort has excellent facilities both in your room and around the resort. This includes a swimming pool, spa, fitness suite and a range of classes. They have two restaurants offering Thai and Italian cuisine. We love the way they do breakfast here. They personalise your breakfast and then bring you a hamper full of fresh goodies. You can have breakfast anywhere in the resort and any time. You can enjoy breakfast in bed, on your balcony, by the pool or their restaurant. Win. They also include a free airport pick up for guests. Just let them know you arrival details and let them do the rest.
How to get to your hotel
It is very easy to get to the old town from the airport. You can take a RTC shuttle bus from the airport into the old town (20THB which is around 50 pence) They operate from 6am -10.30pm. Alternatively you can take a taxi. These should not cost more than around 150 THB (£4) to get anywhere in town. Be prepared to barter if it is a metered taxi. They may not use the meter so it is important to agree a price before you jump in. Don’t be afraid to walk away if they are a bit too intense. If you don’t want the stress, most hotels offer airport pick up services, but there may be a charge for this.

Top tip: We have seen a common strategy with rippy taxi drivers. They will pretend they are unsure about the address and then may try and charge more later. It is helpful to have the location of your accommodation pre-pinned on a map on your phone. Make sure that they are happy with the location and price before you go. If you use a GPS on your phone as you go, this will show the driver that you are aware of where you are going.
AND Finally definitely check out Chai Lai Orchid

This hotel is some way out of Chiang Mai and is WELL worth a mention. If you love elephants and nature be sure to check out the incredible Chai Lai Orchid hotel with elephants. This innovative project is located in the hills to the south of Chiang Mai (around 1-2 hours drive). Chai Lai Orchid offer ethical elephant encounters in a stunning location. You can receive wake up calls from elephants and even have breakfast with these beautiful creatures! They offer a range of unforgettable experiences such as trekking with elephants and swimming with elephants. Best of all this hotel is also committed to helping women and girls rescued from trafficking and supporting the local community with employment and training. We LOVE this place so much we have a full article on Chai Lai orchid.
