As experienced budget travellers we’re super excited to share our secrets with you
Before having kids we used to pride ourselves on how cheaply we could travel as a couple. We would eat the cheapest street food and hunt extensively to find the absolute cheapest accommodation. And we enjoyed some of the greatest adventures we could dream of.
But even with kids, we have found that you can enjoy STUNNING places for surprisingly cheap prices. The tropical 2 week holiday in Thailand has sun, sea, sand and amazing food. No cooking or washing up. A dream 2 week holiday in Thailand really doesn’t need to break the bank.
Can you really take a tropical 2 week holiday in Thailand more cheaply than a holiday in the UK in 2026?

Yes! Staycations in the UK can cost hundreds or even thousands of pounds depending where you go. And even at these prices you will often be buying food yourself, cooking it yourself and then washing up and cleaning up after. Doesn’t sound like much of a holiday to me.
Since the pandemic the prices of self-catering accommodation in the UK have been literally extortionate! Even a humble holiday in our home country has become something for the privileged elite. We’re going to show you how to have sun, sea and sand without being exploited by eye wateringly expensive prices in the UK.
TOP TIP – Some areas of South Thailand have been getting very expensive in recent years. So you do need to get off the beaten track if you’re hoping to explore South Thailand. Chiang Mai and the north or Thailand is still delightfully cheap this year.

How does this compare to a cheap 2 week holiday in the UK?

Don’t get us wrong. The UK is BEAUTIFUL and we are all about appreciating the beauty wherever you are in the world. But the UK is definitely not cheap – especially if you want to relax and eat out.
Even a cheap staycation in the UK is not that cheap! A cheap hotel or AirB&B’s in a beautiful location in the UK starts at around £70 per night (that’s £490 per person for 2 weeks). For a cheap UK holiday you are likely to spend at least £10 per day on food per person (unless you eat supermarket sandwiches) and at least £50 for petrol depending how far you drive. A cheap UK holiday in a nice location is likely to cost around £650 per person for 2 weeks. MORE EXPENSIVE than a 2 week holiday in a tropical paradise.
So a budget 2 week holiday in Thailand is likely to be cheaper than a budget 2 week holiday in the UK. But remember, you will need to be savvy in the way that you plan and book your Thailand holiday…
Someone may object here and say that you could camp more cheaply in the UK. True, you can do the UK cheaper than we have suggested. But it doesn’t seem reasonable to compare a camping holiday with staying in a beach bungalow. Also camping in the UK can be surprisingly expensive depending where and when you camp.
What does a cheap 2 week holiday in Thailand look like in 2026?

But this doesn’t mean camping, hitch hiking and eating meagre portions of rice.

The sleeper train also saves you the cost of one night’s accommodation. The main difference between a first and second class bed is the amount of privacy. First class sleeper trains offer a private lockable cabin with two beds. Second class sleeper carriages normally have bed spaces with curtains for privacy.
3 Local journeys in Thailand

If you use the Grab App you can normally take local taxi journeys around Thailand for 50 – 100 baht (£1-2). The Grab App doesn’t work everywhere. How much does it cost to have a dream 2 week holiday in Thailand in 2026?

Ok, now we’ve talked about the cheapest options, let’s see what happens when you pay a little more to have a dream 2 week holiday in Thailand (assuming of course that you still don’t want to break the bank).
If you only have 2 weeks for your holiday you may not want to go as cheap as possible. Flights may cost more if you can only travel during the school holidays. Even then Thailand is still surprisingly cheap. Depending exactly where you go and what you want to do it is easily possible to do an EPIC two week dream holiday in Thailand for £800 – £1,000 per person including activities, flights, insurance, visas, food, transport and accommodation.
Check out our amazing itineraries that show you how to do this step by step. If you arrange an itinerary through a travel agent it is likely to cost you thousands of pounds – and even then they wont include the range of activities that we share.

Phuket one week itinerary – Phuket has it all beaches, viewpoints, waterfalls, temples and elephants
Chiang Mai 10 day itinerary – Waterfalls, jungles, temples, amazing food, hot springs and adventure
Pai one week itinerary – beautiful village with hot springs, waterfalls, amazing caverns and more
In Thailand if you pay a little more you can get a lot more. A dream 2 week holiday in Thailand includes adventurous activities and experiencing all of the best things to do in the area. You can stay in beautiful accommodation in premium locations. And enjoy decadent food for surprisingly low prices.
For example, you can stay in a stunning resort like THE RED PEARL RESORT in Koh Phangan where private sea view villas are around 1,200 baht per night (this is roughly £24). A place like this has all the charm, comfort and beauty of a 5-star resort, but doesn’t have all of the facilities and ameneties that you would expect in a 5 star resort. If you’re just looking to be somewhere beautiful – there are loads of places like this around Thailand.

Throw in an island hopping trip (normally around £50 per person), you really do have a dreamy holiday in paradise. Or if you’re up in the north, consider visiting an elephant sanctuary or staying in a hotel with elephants (again this should only cost £50 – £100 depending exactly what you want to do). This is a super caring innovative project in the hills of North Thailand.

Other activities like waterfalls and temples are very cheap or FREE of charge. Seriously, get you bum on to our itineraries to see exactly how to plan a dream holiday in Thailand.
Is a 2 week holiday in Thailand expensive for families with kids in 2026?
It all depends on the age of your kids and what you want to do. If you’re happy sharing a room, you can normally find comfortable cheap family accommodation for around 500 – 1,000 baht per night (£10 – £20). Many attractions in Thailand do not generally charge for kids under 12 years old (or some places do it by height). Kids will also get cheaper train tickets in Thailand too. Food is super cheap here, so adding a few hungry kids to your budget shouldn’t add too much to your overall trip cost.
The big difference will be in the flights. If you have young kids, try to find an airline that doesn’t add too much for kids’ seats. If your child is young enough to travel on your lap (normally under 2) they will only need to pay a smaller fee for flights. If your kids are older and in school, so you are stuck with expensive school holiday flights – we recommend taking a LONGER holiday in Thailand. Consider a full 6 week summer holiday if you can afford the time. Extending your trip wont increase the cost massively because prices in Thailand are so low compared to the UK.
How much would a luxury once in a lifetime 2 week holiday in Thailand cost in 2026?

5 star resorts typically start at around £100 per night – although you can find cheaper deals from time to time. If you pay £200 – £300 per night you can stay in some of the most luxurious and decadent accommodation around. £300 – £500 per night allows you to book large, luxurious, private family villas in premium locations with private pools and all the amenities and services of a top end hotel.
The Keemala 5-star jungle canopy resort in Phuket…

You can easily find private drivers who will take you from place to place in comfort and stress free (this is likely to cost around £30 per day depending how far you want to go in the day).
There are also amazing luxurious innovative hotels and villas with private swimming pools – so you can swim in paradise with perfect privacy. Check out our article on Hotels in Phuket with private swimming pools to see what we mean. Whether you want to stay in the jungle canopy, on a tropical island or a sunset beach, Thailand has it all.
