What are prices like in Phuket?

Prices in Phuket are a little higher than average prices around Thailand. However, a Phuket holiday is still likely to be cheaper than many other countries.

Some of the things that are surprisingly cheap include:

  • Transport can be very cheap depending how you get around. For example, journeys around Phuket by bus or Songthaew typically cost 20 – 200 baht per person depending on the distance. At present (October 2021) there are not many buses running in Phuket. To get around we recommend car rental or getting taxis using the Grab App.
  • Street food: There is not as much cheap street food in Ao Nang compared to other places around Thailand. Most dishes start at around 50 baht. However there are plenty of restaurants and shops like seven eleven to buy food.
  • Accommodation can be very cheap starting at around 250 baht for a simple fan room. Rooms with air conditioning start at around 500 baht per night.
  • Massages and beauty treatments can be very cheap. For example you can find Thai massages for as little as 200 baht for an hour.
  • Tours and activities: These are generally very cheap in Thailand. Especially when you just rock up to places or if you go on shared tours. Small attractions are either free or generally cost 50 – 100 baht.

Some things can be expensive:

  • Taxis can be surprisingly expensive in Phuket, especially if you do not barter. We found that it is much more expensive to take taxis or tuk tuks on the streets. Use the Grab App for cheaper taxis.
  • Some accommodation is very expensive if you want to splash out. For example you can find a nice hotel on the seafront with a swimming pool for 2,000 baht.
  • Some private tours and island trips can be quite expensive – but then you are getting a boat for a day to explore paradise
  • Eating in restaurants can be expensive – but when you pay more you do get a lot more and you will probably be surprised how far your money goes

Best budget tips for a cheap Phuket holiday

  • Bartering is acceptable in Thailand although understandably many tourists are reluctant to barter because the tourism sector has been hit so hard by covid. You can still barter gently.
  • However in touristy spots such as night markets, locals may charge very high prices and be unwilling to barter. Also you generally don’t barter for food in Thailand. You can barter for accommodation and transport if you are travelling around Phuket on a low budget.
  • If you are really on a tight budget you may find Seven Eleven food cheaper than the street food in the area.
  • If possible try renting a bike (this wont be possible for many families with young kids) but it will make transport cheap. Avoid taxis. There is a good bus system and songthaews are a better option. Many of the activities that we suggest in this itinerary also have free pick up and drop off included in the price.

How much will a one week Phuket holiday cost?

If you follow this itinerary a one week sandbox Phuket holiday will cost in the range of £400 – £3,000 for one person (not including visas, flights, PCR tests and insurance). Remember these are only rough estimates to help you plan – the actual cost of your Phuket holiday depends on your specific choices and spending on your trip. You will need to factor these costs into your planning:

  • The cost of visas (where relevant) Around £30 ($40) for a 60 day tourist visa (TR). Check whether your country qualifies for the visa exempt scheme.
  • The cost of flying to and from Phuket
  • The cost of PCR tests (pre flight and during your stay) These are very expensive and could set you back by more than £200
  • The cost of insurance (including covid-cover) – you can find some good deals for a short trip – shop around

The low budget option is not the absolute cheapest that you could do this itinerary because you could save money by finding the cheapest food (e.g seven eleven snacks) and the cheapest accommodation. The low budget option is meant to be a realistic estimate of the cost of a cheap and enjoyable and low stress trip that still includes all of the main activities.

Here is a break down of the costs per person to give you a feel for your Phuket holiday budget:

Total cost LOW budgetTotal cost for MID budgetTotal cost for HIGH budget
Accommodation4,500 baht Cheapest SHA+ hotels10,000 baht Good hotel sandbox package100,000 baht Private villa
Food and drinks2,100 baht (300 baht per day) Mostly street food4,200 baht (600 baht per day)Some street food and some restaurants10,500 baht (1,500 baht per day) Luxurious restaurants
Activities10,000 baht Activities on this itinerary (shared island tour)22,000 baht Activities on this itinerary (private island tour)20,000 baht Private tours
Transport2,000 baht Using grab and using activity free pick ups3,500 bahtGood deal on a car rental 10,500 baht (1,500 baht per day) Private drivers for day
Totals: 18,600 baht (£400 or around $600)40,000 baht (£900 or around $1,200)141,000 baht (£3,000 or around $4,000)

Also if you are taking a Phuket holiday as a couple, family or group, you will probably save money by sharing accommodation and transport costs. So if you are planning your budget for a group you will need to account for additional food costs and additional activity costs, but accommodation and transport are only likely to increase a little for your group.

Is this Phuket holiday too expensive? The private island hopping tour adds hundreds of pounds to this itinerary. You could simply skip this part and then see the islands later in your holiday. But if you’re all about the islands check out the Ko Samui sandbox program which allows you to take your SHA+ stay in Koh Phang Nga or Ko Tao.

What activities do you need to pre-book for your Phuket holiday?

For most of the activities on this Phuket holiday itinerary it is possible to just turn up and pay on arrival. However, many of the activities we suggest do have options to pre-book if you prefer to have peace of mind. However, you will need to pre-book the following activities:

Prebook the Thai cooking course (Day 3)

Book a morning cooking class at the Phuket Thai Cooking Academy for 2,200 baht for adults and 1,000 baht for children. You can either pay by bank card online or you can pay in cash on the course. Price includes pick up and drop off – but we recommend taking the pick up and getting a drop off from the Elephant Sanctuary. The Cooking Academy is next to the elephant sanctuary so that you can walk between them.

Phone number: +66 92 962 6076 or email: Brian@PhuketThaiCookingAcademy.com

Prebook the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary (Day 3)

Book an afternoon visit to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket. If you take the cooking course in the morning you will not need pick up as you can walk here from the Cooking School. The cost of this half day visit is 2,500 baht for adults, 1,900 baht for children (4-10 years old). You can book visits to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary online: https://elephantjunglesanctuary.com/phuket/

Prebook the Island hopping tour (Day 6)

You will need to book your island hopping tour at least a day or two in advance. For full details of the tour options and prices see day 6 of this itinerary.

The one week Phuket holiday itinerary in depth

Day 1 Muay Thai training, Patong town, Wat Suwan Khiri Wong and sunset at Freedom Beach

This is an active first day of your Phuket holiday. Pack swimming stuff, towels, sunscreen and bring plenty of water. Also we recommend wearing trainers rather than flip flops for the walk to the beach. If you plan to stay at Freedom Beach for the sunset, bring a torch for the trek back.

Start your day with a Muay Thai training class at the AEK Muay Thai Gym. We recommend bringing trainers, a water bottle, a towel and a change of clothes. The AEK Muay Thai gym is open Monday – Saturday from 8am – 6pm. They run morning class sessions from 8am – 10am and afternoon class sessions from 4pm – 6pm. Prices depend on what classes you hope to do.

  • 1 hour private session costs 800 baht (around £16 or $20)
  • One off class session 400 baht (around £8 or $10)
  • Two sessions (a morning and an afternoon) 600 baht (around £12 or $15)
  • One week, one session per day 2,000 baht (around £40 or $50)
  • One week, two sessions per day 3,000 baht (around £60 or $80)
  • One month, one session per day 8,000 baht (around £160 or $200)
  • One month, two sessions per day 10,000 baht (around £200 or $250)

The AEK Muay Thai gym is located on Route 4030 just south of Patong town.

After Muay Thai training, head to Patong town. There are lots of great restaurants and shops to explore in Patong. Don’t miss Bangla Road walking street – a top spot for bars, restaurants and a street market. For a great way to take the edge of the heat head to Samero’s Gelato Cafe.

There is also a great local noodle cafe just next to Samero’s. Patong Beach is also beautiful and has a great buzz. They serve authentic traditional local food for amazing prices (around 50baht – 80 baht per dish)

It’s always good to get a feel for the local culture if you take a phuket holiday. After exploring Patong town, head to Wat Suwan Khiri Wong (วัดสุวรรณคีรีวงก์) located in the north east of Patong, on the Kathu Road (route 4029). This beautiful temple is free to walk around although you can make a donation. It is important to dress respectfully (no shorts and shoulders covered). Further up the hill is Wat Doi Thepnimit is a beautiful hill temple with a view over Patong and towards the ocean.

The first day of your Phuket holiday finishes with a visit to Freedom Beach for sunset. Don’t miss our FULL guide on exactly how to get to Freedom Beach Phuket.

Freedom beach is a small quiet beach located on the west coast of Phuket between Patong Beach and Karon Beach. We have recommended a visit to Freedom Beach because it is the most beautiful beach in Phuket. Freedom beach is relatively quiet, has soft white sand and beautiful clear blue water.

To get to Freedom beach you need to walk down a steep path from Ratprachanikroh road. The walk will take around 20-30 minutes and involves trekking down a steep jungle path (and later back up). The best way to get to the start of the trail is by rental car or use the Grab App to book a taxi. You will get to a point on Ratprachanikroh road where the road becomes very rough (and there is a metal gate to your right).

There is a trail down to the beach just before the metal gate. Unfortunately the locals may be possessive over this spot and may try and deter you from using the trail (notice the privacy sign stuck to the gate!) If this is the case, either be persistent and confident or walk around 500m further up the road and there is an entrance to another trail on the right. Remember to be prepared for a jungle trek down to the beach – it’s actually a beautiful route!

Top tip: The sun sets between 6pm – 7pm in Thailand depending on the time of year. After the sun drops it gets dark very quickly in the tropics. Bring a good torch for the trek back. If you go to freedom beach by taxi, we recommend arranging a deal with the driver to wait and take you back to Patong after.

Day 2 Visit Kathu waterfall, Enjoy a massage, explore Phuket old town and Rang Hill viewpoint

Day 2 of your Phuket holiday is full of adventure, relaxation and culture. Wear clothes suitable for a short but steep jungle trek to Kathu waterfall. Consider light loose clothing with good walking shoes. We recommend some insect repellent and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water. Pack a change of clothes.

Start by visiting Kathu waterfall (น้ำตกกะทู้). The Kathu waterfall is located in the central Kathu district of Phuket. The best way to get to Kathu waterfall is by taxi (use the grab app to book your taxi). Alternatively if you have rented a car you can drive to the carpark at the bottom of the steps that lead up to the waterfall. It is FREE to visit the Kathu waterfall – there are no entrance tickets or national park fees here. The waterfall itself is beautiful and most impressive in the rainy season.

Walk up the steps to the waterfall. The walk is only a few hundred meters. Once you get to the first waterfall you will see that steps continue leading up the hill and you can follow the river up the hill and see more waterfalls. If you keep following the steps up the hill eventually you will get to the end of the steps and find a jungle path. If you follow the jungle path for a few hundred meters you will find a small secluded lagoon in the jungle – a great spot for a cooling dip.

If you love waterfalls you may be interested in our Phuket waterfall guide – The best Phuket waterfalls and how to get to them.

This one is a little local Hidden Secret Gem in Phuket. After visiting Kathu waterfall drop by Simply‘ism cafe, sauna and spa. This attraction is located a few hundred meters down the road from the Kathu waterfall car park. The beautiful little cafe is surrounded by flowers and located next to a beautiful jungle pool. The spa has a small plunge pool, a herbal sauna and they also do Thai massage. Herbal Sauna: 200 baht for 1 day. Thai Massage: Prices start at 400 baht for 1 hour. Open daily 10am – 10pm (these hours may be reduced due to the drop in business from covid lockdowns).

After enjoying the waterfall and spa, head to Phuket old town. Phuket old town is crammed with colourful and beautiful colonial buildings. You will also find coffee shops, cafes and quaint restaurants serving a range of Asian and Western cuisine.

From Phuket old town it is very easy to go up Rang Hill viewpoint (เขารัง) for an amazing sunset experience. You can either walk up the road to the top of Rang Hill (the road starts on the intersection of Mae Luan road and Khaw Sim Bee road). There are many monkeys at the top of Rang Hill and there is also a feeding net too.

A visit to Rang Hill viewpoint is a must do for any Phuket holiday! The Rang hill viewpoint affords a great view of Phuket town and the beautiful surrounding landscape. It is a fantastic place to see the sunset over Phuket. There are also some beautiful restaurants with a view at the Rang hill viewpoint. Check out the Khao Rang Breeze restaurant for ambiance and a great menu. Also don’t miss Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham (วัดเขารังสามัคคีธรรม) located part way up Rang hill on the south side.

Day 3 Learn Thai cooking, visit the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary and the Phuket wake park

This day of the Phuket holiday is completely based in Kathu – a central district of Phuket. In the morning do a cooking class with the Phuket Thai Cooking Academy (9am – 12.30pm) and then visit the ethical Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in the afternoon (1pm – 4pm).

Pack a day bag with swimming stuff, towels, a change of clothes, sunscreen and insect repellent. Bring good shoes for walking on rough, uneven terrain. The Phuket Thai Cooking Academy is very close to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary so you can walk between the two. If you do not have your own transport we recommend using the pick up service from the cooking school and then using the drop off service from the elephant sanctuary. Check that this is ok when you book.

Your day starts with a cooking class at the Phuket Thai Cooking Academy. Choose to learn how to make 5 Thai dishes of your choice from a range of 27 dishes. Half day class cost 2,200 baht (around £45 or $60)  including hotel transfer, a market visit and best of all you get to eat your culinary creations at the end of the class. You can book in advance online. You can either pay by bank card online or you can pay in cash on the course. Children are welcome to participate. The cost is 1,000 baht (around £20 or $26) for children 3-12 years old. Morning classes run from 9am – 12.30pm.

This may well be one of your highlights of the Phuket holiday! The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket is an ethical elephant sanctuary that prioritises the wellbeing of elephants. Their afternoon program starts at 1pm and finishes at 4pm. If you visit you will be able to feed the elephants (it’s a lot of fun), play with them, help wash them and generally make friends. They don’t do elephant riding. The cost of this half day visit is 2,500 baht for adults (around £30 or $40), 1,900 baht for children (4-10 years old).

Keep your eye out for discounts on their website. They also offer a Full day visit including an elephant jungle trek (7am – 5pm) for 4,900 baht (around £100 or $130) The full day visit is not suitable for children under 10 years old. Both half day and full day visits include lunch and drinks. They also have a pick up and drop off service for 100 baht (around £2 or $3) from some locations around Phuket. The Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket also offers volunteering projects and overnight stays available.

Is the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary ethical?

If you are opposed to any tourist animal encounters we recommend you give this a miss. The elephant jungle sanctuary is one of the most ethical sanctuaries in Phuket. They don’t allow riding or use hooks. Elephants have a reasonable amount of space and are well fed. However, we did notice an elephant swaying its head (which can be a sign of trauma and / or boredom). The elephants don’t have a lot of space here – however they do take the elephants for treks and regular bathing. At busier times, there is a potential for elephants to be overcrowded. So overall, this is a reasonably good way to see elephants if you are in Phuket.

Finally, this may be a bit of a squeeze but we wanted to mention the Phuket Wake Park located in Kathu and not far from the Elephant sanctuary. This isn’t for everyone. The Phuket Wake Park has cables that pull you along the water on a wakeboard. There are also obstacles to try out as you build up your confidence. You can take sessions ranging from 1 hour up to a full day. A 30 minute session on the training cable costs 300 baht (around £6 or $8) coach not included. A two hour session on the big cable costs 450 baht (around £10 or $13) friday – sunday and 400 baht (around £8 or $10) for the rest of the week. They also have a special deal for beginners: 30 minutes training with a coach and then 1 hour on the big cable for 600 baht (around £12 or $15). They include board rental and life vest rental for free. However, if you want to rent a jump board it costs 250 baht (around £5 or $8). They also offer coaching sessions and introductory packages. You do not need to book in advance. For more information visit their website: For more details email: info@phuketwakepark.com

Opening hours 9am – 6pm Friday – Sunday and 12pm – 6pm for the remainder of the week.

Could you switch these activities around?

It is possible to visit the Elephant Sanctuary in the morning and then do the cooking course in the afternoon. However, we recommend doing the cooking course first so that you can enjoy your cooking course food for lunch. Also it is nicer to do the cooking course whilst you are clean in the morning and then going to get muddy with the elephants in the afternoon. If you wanted to switch the activities around these are the timings: Visit the Elephant Sanctuary in the morning 7am – 12pm and then take the cooking class in the afternoon 1.30pm – 5pm. There is plenty of time between the activities if you do it this way around.

Day 4 Visit the Phuket Aquarium, Ao Yon Beach, Wat Chalong and Buddha Hill

Bring swimming kit and suncream. Make sure that you have appropriate clothing for the temples; keep shoulders covered and shorts and skirts need to be longer than knee length.

Phuket indoor activities aquarium

There are several stops on this lovely day.  Start with a visit to the Phuket Aquarium on the Panwa cape (south east tip of Phuket). The Phuket Aquarium includes a range of fascinating exhibits to help visitors connect with the oceans and better understand conservation. They also have an underwater tunnel and a turtle sanctuary.

Tickets cost 180 baht (just over £3 or $5) for adults and 100 baht (around £2 or $3) for children. The aquarium is open daily from 8.30am – 4.30pm. There is also a more expensive aquarium in Phuket – we have recommended this one both for the price and proximity to the beautiful Ao Yon beach.

After enjoying the aquarium, visit the nearby Ao Yon Beach. We recommend having lunch at the Flamingo Bar (Bandara Hotel). This section of Ao Yon beach is quiet and very clean. Ao Yon Beach is one of our favourite beaches in Phuket for clean calm waters and a clean soft sandy beach.

After enjoying Ao Yon beach, head to Wat Chalong (วัดไชยธาราราม วัดฉลอง). Built in 1837 Wat Chalong is Phuket’s most prominent and prestigious temple and is a must see in Phuket. We recommend leaving around one hour for your visit. There are several floors to explore. Wat Chalong has a glass display that contains a bone fragment thought to be a remains of Buddha. Wat Chalong is open from 7am – 5pm and entrance is free.

Finally go to Nakkerd Hill to visit the Big Buddha (พระพุทธมิ่งมงคลเอกนาคคีรี). You can’t take a Phuket holiday without popping by to see the Big Buddha. This large white marble statue of Buddha stands at 45 metres tall and the location affords fantastic views of Phuket. We recommend seeing the Big Buddha in the late afternoon and staying to see the sunset. There is a carpark located at the top of the hill. From here you can walk around a viewing area before walking up the steps to the viewing platform around the Buddha statue. The site is open from 6am – 6pm. Entrance is free but you can make a donation.

Top tip: A taxi to the Big Buddha may be a little more expensive than other journeys around Phuket. From Kata or Chalong expect to pay around 400 baht or more for a round trip to see the Big Buddha. This is around £8 or $10. If you love a challenge there is also a hiking route to the Big Buddha. This starts in Kata near CC’s hideaway resort.

Day 5 Take a surf lesson, visit Karon viewpoint, trek to Black Rock and see Promthep Cape

This is an action packed adventurous day of your Phuket holiday. Pack for sea, sand and dress for some jungle trekking. This day could be done by taxi – but it may be worth trying to work our a deal for the day because there are several stops. It may be better value to rent a car if possible. Alternatively try using the Grab App to take taxis along each section of the journey.

Start with a surf lesson at Jimmy’s Kata surf school at the south end of Kata beach. You do not need to book lessons in advance. Just rock up with a smile and some energy. This surf school normally open around 9am, and the water is normally pretty good for surfing around this time. We found Jimmy’s Kata surf school to be the cheapest AND best spot for learning to surf in Phuket. The teachers at Jimmy’s surf school are fantastic – very experienced, they speak good English and they are excellent at understanding your level and helping you progress. Jimmy’s surf school can also offer paddle boarding lessons too!

At Jimmy’s surf school you can rent a surfboard for 150 baht for 1 hour (around £3 or $5).

You can take a surf lesson for 800 baht for 1 hour (around £16 or $20)

You can rent a body board for 50 – 100 baht for 1 hour – great for kids! (£1-2 or $2-3)

Check prices on arrival because these can change depending on the season and demand.

After fun surfing, take route 4030 south up the hill and down the coast. Watch out for Cafe Hill Coffee and Bistro on the left. This is a lovely cafe and coffee shop set in the jungle hills. After this keep going a little further to the Karon viewpoint (Khao Sam Haad). This is a stunning spot – especially on a sunny day. Note, it is called the Karon viewpoint because of the excellent view up Karon bay. Don’t be misled by the name – the Karon view point is actually south of Kata bay.  As you gaze up the coast you can see Kata bay, Karon bay. Patong bay and Kamala bay are hidden behind the hills.

A little way beyond the Karon viewpoint you can also park up and trek to Black Rock. Many people argue this is the best view point on Phuket island due to the panoramic sweeping views of the islands to the south of Phuket.

There is a beautiful 3.8 km round trek at Black Rock. The route starts by following a wide dusty trail up into the hills (it is wide enough for vehicles although we recommend caution driving this way due to the bumpy terrain). After around 1km you turn off onto a smaller trail and follow this round. Eventually the trail becomes a small jungle path before you reach the stunning black rock view point.

From here you follow a path down through the jungle until it reaches a dusty road. Turn right here and this road leads back to the road you walked up. Here is a trekking map to help you navigate on the Black Rock trek.

Here are some more details on the jungle trek to the Black Rock viewpoint AND if you love trekking don’t miss our FULL guide on Trekking in Phuket (we even include super handy route maps to help you stay in track!)

After enjoying a trek at Black Rock you can also visit the Promthep Cape. You can actually see Promthep cape in the distance from Black Rock. It is also possible to drive round to the Cape and the walk along the cape.

Promthep Cape is a narrow cape located at the south tip of Phuket island. There is a carpark at Prothep. You can then take a short walk to a view point over the cape. If you actually want to walk down onto the cape take care – the path is very steep and narrow and uneven. This walk would not be suitable for families with young children.

If you have time and energy, head to Nai Harn beach. This is our favourite beach for good vibes. The beach is normally pretty clean and you will generally see lots of ex-pats, digital nomads and yoga instructors enjoying this hippytastic area.

Day 6 Island hopping tour and snorkelling and explore the Chillva night market

Take an island hopping tour of the stunning Phang Nga bay National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติ อ่าวพังงา). This beautiful bay is home to steep karst islands and the iconic James Bond island (Khao Phing Kan เกาะเขาพิงกัน). Due to the popularity of the area it has become harder to arrange trips and tours for a good price. Don’t miss our guide on booking an island hopping tour of the Phang Nga bay.

A good tour of the Phang Nga bay should include a visit to the following destinations:

  • Phanak island
  • Koh Panyee
  • Koh Sawang
  • Pingkan mountain
  • Lod cave
  • James Bond island (Koh Phing Kan)

If you’re staying in Phuket there are two ways to book a boat trip of the Phang Nga bay:

  1. Book with a company based in Phuket or with your guest house (Most convenient option)
  2. Book a tour directly from an operator at the Ao Phang Nga National Park Harbour (Cheapest option)

1 Booking from Phuket (most convenient option)

If you book a tour in Phuket expect to pay at least 2500 baht per person (£50 or $70). A good tour should include transfer, insurance, soft drinks, fruit, lunch, life jackets, snorkelling equipment, kayak rental and at least 4 – 5 stops at reefs, islands and sea caves. They may also include national park fees (300 baht per person). Check what is included when you book. If you plan to book a tour in Phuket you may be able to book through your guest house or hotel. There are also lots of small travel agents around who can often organise tours.

Two Sisters Travel also offer all inclusive Phang Nga bay boat tours for a competitive price. Contact them early. They will only operate when they have a sufficient number of bookings. Their itinerary is as follows: Panak island, Panyee island, Hong island kayaking, James bond island and Naka island. They include all of the following: Hotel transfer, lunch, fruit, soft drinks, insurance, snorkelling gear and kayaks, life jackets and national park fees. Two Sisters Travel charges 3,500 baht per adult (£70 or $100) and 1,700 baht for children 4 – 11 years old (£32 or $40). This may seem expensive but there are companies that charge as much as 30,000 baht for private tours of the Phang Nga bay! This is around £600 or $800

2 Booking from the Ao Phang Nga Harbour (cheapest option)

baht for a private boat tour, usually half a day (this is around £30 – £60 or $40 – $80). You also need to pay 300 baht per person for national park fees (around £6 or $8) and around 300 baht per person for kayak rental.

This option is cheaper but more tricky as the Harbour is located over 50km north of Phuket town (by road) and you will need to arrange your own transport. The Ao Phang Nga harbour is located just north of the Samet Nangshe viewpoint in the Ao Phang Nga national park. The best way to get to the harbour would be to rent a car or bike. Alternatively use a Grab taxi (remember to factor this into the cost when you are comparing this to booking a tour in Phuket).

Hanah Tour is based in the Ao Phang Nga national park and can offer private boats for 2,000 baht (excluding national park fees and not including kayak rental or lunch). They generally include 4 destinations: James bond island, Lod Cave, Pingkan mountain and Panyee island. We recommend booking a couple of days in advance.

Hanah Tour can be contacted on whatsapp +66933906568.

Alternatively drop them an email at: taweesin57533@gmail.com

No Phuket holiday is complete without a visit to a night market. After enjoying an island hopping tour, hop over to the Chillva night market located in the Ratsada district of Phuket town. The Chillva night market sells a range of clothes, fashion items and . They also have a great selection of street food. The Chillva night market is open every day except Sundays from 5pm – 11pm.

Day 7 Blue Tree Water Park and Banana Beach for sunset

Go to Blue Tree Lagoon for an epic finish to your 7 day Phuket holiday itinerary. The Blue Tree lagoon is a water park located near Bang Tao beach. It has various pools and waterslides for kids of all ages! There is an artificial beach and paddle boarding area. You can also go down several epic water slides – one of which launches you into the air before splashing into the deep pool.

There is an epic kids water adventure playhouse with nets, bridges, waterslides and lots of squirting and splashing. They also have a ninja course – which is a challenging obstacle course. If you like an adrenaline rush don’t miss the zip line, the cliff jumping tower (two jumps around 5m and 10m). There is also a climbing wall with overhangs above the water. They also have a great restaurant and bar with regular deals on their food. And don’t miss the ice cream shop too!

At present Blue Tree Lagoon currently has an awesome promotion: Adults 300 baht (around £6 or $8) full access ticket. Children: 200 baht (around £4 or $5) full access ticket.

Finally head up north of Bang Tao beach to Banana beach – a quiet jungle beach – west facing and great for sunsets.

Important note: Don’t forget to bring your vaccine certificates for this one. Even though you need to be fully vaccinated to enter Thailand, many places ask to see your certificate. Our only frustration with the Blue Tree water park is that they do not allow you to bring water in plastic bottles. It is expensive to buy water onsite and the water filler has odd tasting water.

We picked Cape Panwa hotel for its access to a beautiful clean private beach. The luxurious Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket is situated in a quiet area of Panwa Beach in the southeast Phuket. Best hotel for social travellers – The Double Tree by Hilton

double tree Hilton Phuket

Check double tree prices now

For a Phuket holiday with a buzz check out the Double Tree in Patong. The DoubleTree by Hilton Phuket Banthai Resort Patong has three outdoor swimming pools and offers lots of activities. Located right on the Patong beach front, amazing sunset walks on the beach are only a stone’s throw away. This is also very well located for this itinerary – being relatively central and not too far from Kathu, Kata and Phuket town. We picked this one for its popularity and its location in Patong. Some of the beaches on the west coast (such as Karon) are super quiet and to be honest a little lifeless. Patong is something of a hub in Phuket. It has the best buzz with lots of places open and lots of other travellers around.

Best hotel for culture – 2Rooms Boutique house

2rooms boutique hotel old town

Check prices and availability at 2ROOMS now

If you want some culture and art in your Phuket holiday you will want to head to Phuket old town. 2Rooms Boutique house is a charming old building full of character, style and elegant culture. Best hotel for budget – The Thames Pool Access Resort

Thames Pool access resort Phuket

Check prices at Thames Pool Access Resort now

If you’re planning a cheaper Phuket holiday we think you’ll love this one. If you stay at the Thames Pool Access Resort you can literally roll out of bed straight into the pool. This hotel is located on the east side of Phuket island in the Chalong district. It is close to any good beaches but there’s plenty of great local food around. If you take a short stroll up the road you can visit Wat Chalong (the most prestigious temple in Phuket). Don’t miss the Friday and Saturday food night market at the Chalong Tesco Lotus. The East side of the island is a lot busier, mainly due to Phuket town and the popularity with locals. You can also easily take a taxi up Phuket Hill to the Big Buddha from here.

Other things to see and do around Phuket

If you’re planning to travel to Phuket with kids don’t miss our complete guide on the best things to do in Phuket with kids.

Phuket really does have so much to offer! If your Phuket holiday is longer than one week or you want to switch out some activities in the Phuket itinerary here is some more inspiration.

Check out the Sunday Walking Street Market: If you get a chance, check out the Sunday walking street market (Lard Yai) on Thalang road in the Phuket old town. The market starts to open up around 4pm and normally runs until 9pm or later. The Sunday walking street market is particularly notable for its incredible range of street food. Including local snacks, BBQ food, sea food, ice cream, drinks.

Learn Thai Massage: Check out the Suai Thai Massage Training Centre (Phuket). Basic half day courses start at around 1,500 baht (around £30 or $40). You can do one day courses for 2,500 baht (around £50 or $70) and you can also take longer courses with certification. Alternatively you could just get a massage from one of the many small massage spas around Phuket.

Walk up Monkey hill: Another great option for a Phuket holiday. We didn’t put this one in the itinerary because we recommended the Rang Hill viewpoint instead. Monkey hill is close to Rang Hill and is a bit taller – so it is more of a challenge to trek up. This could be a nice addition to your trip to Phuket and a great way to see more of Thailand’s beautiful wildlife. The walk will take several hours, come prepared with water, sunscreen and light clothing.

Learn Scuba Diving: The Sharkey Scuba Dive centre is open and ready for business. They offer a range of courses and experiences for people of any level of experience from beginners to highly experienced divers. They currently offer one to one tuition and include two full day boat trips including transfer and meals. The PADI open water courses cost 16,000 – 20,000 baht (around £300-400 or $400 -$550) depending on the specific program that you select. If this is too expensive consider learning to dive on Koh Tao in Thailand instead. https://www.sharkeyscuba.com/

Learn Free diving: Free diving is about training yourself to go deep underwater for a long time without the support of an air canister. It is a lot of fun. You can take a 3 day freediving course for around 8,000 – 10,000 Baht at SSS Phuket (around £160 – £200 or $200 – $250). The course includes a day trip to a local island diving spot to (they offer AIDA, Molchanovs, SSI or PADI freediving courses) . They are super friendly and ready to teach you this incredible skill. For more information email: janb.san@gmail.com

Take a yoga class: An awesome addition to a Phuket holiday. There are lots of yoga studios around Phuket – but we would particularly recommend the Belove rooftop yoga studio near Karon beach. They are up and running with classes now. The studio affords a beautiful view of the Phuket landscape. They offer a wide range of classes including some beach classes. You can take single classes for 350 baht (around £7 or $10). Drinking Water, Face Towels, Yoga Equipment, Green tea after session, Outdoor Pool and Shower included.

Sadly still closed to visitors: The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project: This ethical project is located at the Bang Pae waterfall (น้ำตกบางแป) is an ethical project in north Phuket. To get to the project you need to pay the national park entrance fee of 200 baht (around £4 or $5). Entrance to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is FREE, but you can make donations to the project. The nature of the project means that you probably wont see the gibbons that have been released into the wild – but that’s the point – to minimise human contact. However you are able to see some gibbons who cannot be released back into the wild. We LOVED walking in the area in the morning and hearing the enchanting call of the gibbons.

Rent a sea Kayak: Kayak rental is not super common around Phuket. There are a few places that you can rent sea Kayaks – a great activity for a calm sunset evening. There is a diving shop on the south of Kata bay that has several Kayaks (2 person) and they offer rental. YaNui beach also has a Kayak rental shop – a great spot for sea Kayaking. Expect to pay in the region of 250 – 400 baht per hour. Be prepared to barter – especially if you want to take a longer rental or you are renting in low season.

Visit the Adventure Village at Blue tree: This is our top pick indoor activity in Phuket for families with kids. Adventure village is a large indoor play space with slides, trampolines, ball pits and a foam pit. To find out more check out our article on the Adventure Village Phuket.

paragliding in Phuket

Fly with the Eagles: You can also arrange a paragliding trip in Phuket from the stunning Black Rock viewpoint. Don’t miss our full guide on how to arrange Paragliding in Phuket.

Here are some places to explore in the Phuket region

Here is some inspiration after your Phuket holiday. Once you have finished your 7 day Sandbox program you can travel Thailand more freely. The Government are gradually opening up more epic locations around Thailand. Keep your eye on the latest restrictions on the TAT website. Here are some other stunning places near Phuket that you may be able to travel to (now or in the near future)

Khlong Phanom National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติคลองพนม)

The Khlong Phanom National Park has caves, temples, awesome steep hills, jungles and bamboo rafting. The Khlong Phanom National Park is approximately 175km north of Phuket. It would be too far to visit from Phuket in a single day trip. So we recommend either spending a night or two at the national park or visiting on route to your next destination. The journey from Phuket to the Khlong Phanom National Park takes approximately 3 hours

Khao Sok National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาสก)

The Khao Sok National Park is a great place to see wildlife and explore a very beautiful lake. The beautiful Khao Sok national park is situated to the west of Khlong Phanom National park so you could visit both national parks on the same trip. The national park offices are only around 20km apart.

Similan Islands (เกาะสิมิลัน)

This is a set of small islands in the Andaman Sea 65km off the west coast of Thailand. To get to the Similan Islands you can take a boat from Khao Lak. The Similan islands are further afield and are therefore much quieter than the islands around Phuket and Phang Nga bay. You can either visit the Similan islands for a day trip or stay overnight. There are no hotels on the Similan islands but camping and bungalow stays are available.

Krabi and Ao Nang

Krabi and Ao Nang are on the other side of the Phang Nga bay. There is so much to do around Krabi and Ao Nang we have actually written an itinerary to help you plan a visit here too (COMING SOON).

Ko Phi Phi, Ko Yao Yai and Ko Yao Noi

We mentioned that you cannot at present arrange tours to the Phang Nga bay on your Phuket holiday. However we wanted to mention these beautiful islands as a place to visit after your sandbox stay.

Stay in the Phang Nga bay

There isn’t much accommodation in the Phang Nga bay national park. Paradise Koh Yao is a stunning luxury resort located just in the south tip of the national park.

They also arrange private speed boat tours of the Phang Nga bay including the iconic James bond island for around 3,500 baht per person. Book early to avoid disappointment… this one really is a tropical gem!

Things to know before you go

What is the best time of year to go to do a Phuket holiday?

The best time of year to visit Phuket is in the dry season between October and April. The beautiful blue skies make the beaches and islands look stunning. If you go early in the dry season it will still be relatively quiet, but the weather will be excellent. Phuket is a tropical climate and it is hot all year round. In the rainy season it tends to be a bit cooler, generally more cloudy and the humidity can be very high. In the dry season it is often a lot more clear and sunny so make sure you consider good protection from the sun. Rainy season is low season and dry season is high season. Things are generally a bit quieter and some things may be a little cheaper in the rainy season but the islands and beaches are not as picturesque.

Rainy season: May – October

Dry season: October – April

What currency is best to take to Thailand?

The official currency of Thailand is Thai Baht. There are also plenty of ATMs around Phuket and many places accept international bank cards. It is easy to get Thai Baht before you arrive in Thailand and to sell Thai Baht outside of Thailand. You may get a better rate exchanging money in Thailand.

Do people speak much English in Thailand?

Many people in Thailand speak English very well, especially in bigger cities and in tourist hubs.  Most locals in Phuket speak at least some English. Phuket is well set up for tourists with coffee shops, markets and restaurants with menus in English. Hotels and hostels almost always have staff who speak an excellent level of English. So you wont struggle to get around and do things in Phuket and the surrounding areas.

Are there good child care options in Phuket?

Phuket has a great range of child care options for families. You can find nurseries, preschools and kindergartens around Phuket who offer a range of options including day care and longer term programs. Check out Indigo Kids International Nursery & Pre-School. They are very flexible and offer an excellent experience for kids at a great price. It costs 600 baht for half a day and 1,000 baht for a day. They also offer discounts for longer term enrolments and multiple child enrolments. You can also find babysitters and Nannies in Phuket.

Check out Phuket Baby sitter 300 baht per hour for a short term babysitting service. Discounts available for longer sessions. Alternatively your hotel may also have a baby sitting service for an additional fee.

Is Phuket safe for Family Travel?

The short answer is yes. Phuket is a very safe destination for family travel. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe in Phuket. If you ride a motorbike around Phuket remember to wear a helmet and check that you are insured to ride a bike. Take care swimming on the beaches around Phuket – there are some very strong currents. Definitely don’t attempt to swim if you see red flags out.

How do you get to and from Phuket?

If you are completing the Phuket Sandbox program you will need to arrive in Phuket by air. At present it is not possible to transit in Bangkok to enter the Phuket Sandbox program. There are rumors that you will be allowed to transit in Bangkok to start the Sandbox program so watch this space.

What is the best way to get around in Phuket?

Don’t miss our guide to getting around in Phuket

The cheapest way to get around for a solo traveller or couple in Phuket is motorbike rental. For a family the best way to get around is either by taxi using the Grab App (use the “JustGrab” option and not “GrabCar”) or if you plan to drive a lot car rental may turn out to be your cheapest option as a family. Very little public transport is currently operating in Phuket since the lockdowns. Here is some more info on getting around in Phuket:

How much is it to rent a motorcycle in Phuket?

If you are able and willing to ride a motorbike around Phuket this is a very cheap and fun option for solo travellers and couples. You can rent motorbikes in Phuket for 100-400 baht per day (£2 – £8 or $3 – $10) depending on the type of bike and your bartering skills. Renting a motorbike is a very cheap and convenient way to get around Phuket. If you need a bike for several days this should enable you to negotiate a lower rental price. Most rental places ask you to leave a passport or cash sum as a deposit. Make sure you check the terms of the rental contract and inspect the bike for damage at the start. If there is any damage make sure you get a photo of it before you rent. Check out Cheap as Chips Motorbike Rental Phuket.

How much does it cost to take a taxi in Phuket?

Taxis in Phuket can be quite expensive so it is important to barter. It is very common for taxis to have meters but drivers often prefer to agree on a price. Make sure it is clear where you want to go and barter. Expect to pay 150-500 baht (£3 – £10 or $4 – $12)) depending on the distance of the journey. You can also hire taxis for day trips for 1,000 baht – 2,000 baht (around £20 – £40 or $30 – $50) depending on the distance and hours. We recommend arranging this in advance and as ever barter. We recommend downloading the Grab App to find the cheapest taxis . For the cheapest taxi prices use the “JustGrab” option and not “GrabCar”.

We have also thrown together a guide on how to get the BEST taxi prices using the Grab app in Thailand.

Can you get around Phuket by bus?

At present there is little to no public transport available in Phuket. You occasionally see buses travelling around – but the generally don’t seem to be stopping to carry passengers.

How much does car rental cost in Phuket?

For a family or group of travellers we recommend private car hire. It is possible to find car rental in Phuket for around 800 baht per day if you rent for 1-2 days. Prices are generally cheaper if you rent for longer. For example, if you rent a car for a week expect to pay around 500 – 600 baht per day (this is around £10 – 12 or $12 – $15). You can find car rental deals in Phuket for around 4,200 baht for a week. It is always worth bartering. Make sure you fully understand all of the terms in the rental contract. To get a feel for car rental options in Phuket:

TOP TIPS: If you need baby seats check the price and request your dealer to include this in the rental price. Don’t forget to take photos of any bumps, scratches or scuffs before you take the car. Oh yeah some of the airport rental companies will NOT let you take a rental car if you don’t have a credit card – even if you have paid in advance the rental company and vendor will be all too happy to keep your money and not let you take a car.
