Freedom beach is a beautiful quiet, secluded beach on the west coast of Phuket between Patong and Karon bay. In fact, we like Freedom beach so much that we included it on the first day of our One Week Phuket itinerary and also in our guide on secret hidden gems in Phuket. Getting to Freedom beach Phuket can be a little challenging, including some jungle trekking. The area has also changed a lot in recent years. So we have decided to write a full detailed guide here to help you plan your own adventure to Freedom beach Phuket in 2026. We will take you through the whole journey step by step and answer all of your questions.

Why visit Freedom beach Phuket?
If you’re looking for a quiet secluded beach Freedom beach Phuket is one of the best. Freedom beach is pretty small as beaches go (less than 500m in length) and the jungle hills give freedom beach a wild tropical feel. Getting to freedom beach itself is a bit of an adventure with a beautiful jungle trek – so if you want an adventure and some relaxation then freedom beach won’t disappoint. As a west facing beach freedom beach is a great spot for sunsets – but be prepared to do some jungle trekking in the dark if you stay for sunset.
Is there anywhere to stay near Freedom beach Phuket?
Yes, if you are looking for somewhere to stay close to Freedom beach Phuket check out Crest Resort and Pool Villas. It is a 5 star hotel and so it is a bit pricey. Check out the views from their incredible infinity pool – even if you don’t plan to stay here! If you’re looking for somewhere cheaper to stay but still want to be close to freedom beach we recommend staying in Patong where you will find loads of hotels, hostels and guest houses. Patong is close to Freedom beach and very central in Phuket so it makes a great base for exploring Phuket. What should I bring to Freedom beach?
Bring good walking shoes for the steep, rocky jungle trail. Trainers are better than sandals or flip flops. Bring plenty of water and sun protection (sunscreen and sun hats). If you’re planning to stay for sunset, don’t forget to bring a torch to help you trek back up the jungle trail in the dark. And of course- don’t forget your swimming stuff.
How do I get to Freedom beach Phuket?
STEP 1 Getting to the walking trail at the top of the hill above freedom beach
The first challenge is actually getting to the start of the walking trail that leads to Freedom beach. The start of the walking trail is located on jungle road to the south of Patong. To get to this road you need to come from Patong. At the south end of Patong beach you will see a steep road that leads up this hill and over a bridge. This is the road to follow. After you follow this road up the hill from Patong for around 1-2km you will see a left turn. Take this left and follow this road for around 1km. The road becomes unpaved and bumpy just before you get to the start of the first walking Trail to Freedom beach.
Very important note: If you look at maps of the area you may think that you can also get to the road from the south. We don’t recommend this. You cannot access the Freedom beach road from Karon bay. To get to freedom beach we recommend coming from Patong.
What about transport? To get to the Freedom beach walking trail you have 3 options. The best and cheapest option depends on your circumstances:
Rent a motorbike: For a solo traveller or couple renting a bike is the cheapest and best way to get around Phuket. It costs around 200 baht (around £4 or $5) per day to rent a motorbike and you are unlikely to spend more that 100 baht (around £2 or $4) in petrol even if you do a lot of driving. Just make sure that you are qualified and experience riding bikes and that your insurance covers you. Also be aware that the last bit of the motorcycle journey is over a bumpy gritty road. This can be particularly hard to ride on as the wheels can lose traction leading to an accident. Take care if you come by motorbike.
Take a Grab taxi: This is the best option for a family if you are not planning on doing too many stops or going too far in a day. Gone are the days when the cheapest way to get around is to take a tuk tuk at the roadside. Most tuk tuk drivers charge around 400 baht to go a few kilometers (this is around £8 or $10). So if you want a tuk tuk just for the experience be prepared to pay for it. Oh yeah, bartering is totally fine with tuk tuks. If you don’t like bartering and you’re happy to go in a car, a much cheaper alternative is to download the Grab App. Sign in and use the Transport tab. Click “view all” and then Select “Just Grab” (this is a lot cheaper than the “Grab Car” option). With the cheaper “Just Grab” option it should cost around 100 baht (£2 or $3) to go around 5km. You may need to wait for a driver and try searching a few times – but be patient someone will come. In our experience the drivers are very friendly and always stick to the prices on the App.

Rent a car: This is the best option for a family or group if you have a lot of stops in one day or if you need to travel a long distance. Car rental in Phuket is pretty cheap and convenient. Expect to pay around 800 baht per day (£16 or $20). Most places will also ask for around 5,000 baht cash deposit (£100 or $130). Make sure you take photos of any scuffs or damage on the car and make sure the deposit is also written on the contract receipt that you sign. They may also ask to see your drivers lisence and offer additional insurance options. If you plan to rent for a longer period of time you can normally negotiate better deals. If you rent a car for one week you can normally get rental for as little as 50 baht per day (around £1 or $1.30).

STEP 2 Trekking to Freedom beach Phuket
Ok, this is the fun part. There are two main walking trails leading down to Freedom beach. The trails both start from the same road – starting around 500m from each other. The first trail (the north trail) is closer to Patong and a little longer (around 500m from the road to the beach). The top of the first trial is more obvious as there are stalls selling food and someone has started running an ATV business here too!
At the top of the first trail you will see a food stall and a super friendly local offering ATV rides rides (er hem, maybe not so friendly!). This local has taken it upon himself to stick a private “emergency access sign” on the gate and is very keen to tell visitors that they are not allowed to use this trail.
In reality, I think he wants to keep people off the trail so that he can run his ATV business up and down this route. Who knows whether he has any official approval to do this. We didn’t want the confrontation with our two boys so we just used the second trail – it’s up to you if you give it a go anyway.
The second trail (the south trail) is closer to Karon and is a little shorter (around 400m from the road to the beach). The start of the second trail is a bit harder to spot. You may see a few motorbikes parked here. The start of the second trail is located on a sharp left bend in the road (if you are coming from the Patong direction) and the trail is on your right. It is possible to park at the first trail and walk up. Alternatively the road itself is suitable for cars and motorbikes but take care as it is bumpy and gritty. Once you are on the walking trail to Freedom beach it is pretty easy to follow.
Both trails involve a steep jungle path and both trails are very beautiful. As with any jungle trail take care because the ground is uneven with rocks and roots. Also keep your eye out for other beautiful creatures sharing the path with you. If you’re like me, you’ll love the satisfaction of hearing the ocean and feeling the sea breeze at the end of a beautiful sweaty jungle hike.
What are the negatives of Freedom beach Phuket?
We will always try and share the positives and negatives with you to help you manage your expectations and avoid disappointment. We definitely don’t want to put you off because Freedom beach is stunning and TOTALLY worth a visit. Here are a few things to be aware of before you visit…
Firstly, if you’re dreaming of having a paradise beach entirely to yourself, be prepared – it is likely that there will be at least a handful of other people here. There probably are times that you can have this beach to yourself (early mornings, late evenings or rainy days). It is unlikely to be crowded here – but just be prepared you are likely to see a few other people when you visit.
Is Freedom beach clean? Yes, the sand at freedom beach is pretty clean – and we found the water to be clean too. Actually – we kept finding money floating in the water?! Not kidding! I can’t promise this will happen for you. Perhaps the moral of the story is that freedom comes before finance. Anyway, enough philosophy for now. Freedom beach is pretty clean except for the large pile of rubbish towards the back of the beach. This is actually quite well hidden and doesn’t ruin the experience. Sadly I think this rubbish pile has been made by conscientious locals who clean the beach from rubbish that is washed up from the ocean. Yes – this should challenge all of us to reduce waste.
You will find some locals around Freedom beach Phuket. There are often locals selling drinks on the beach itself. Most of the locals are super friendly and welcoming and are part of making Freedom beach a lovely place to visit. We also found some locals selling food at the top and we already mentioned the guy trying to run an ATV business at the top. Travelling Asia for many years has taught us not to let intense or scammy people ruin your experience of a lovely place. It’s all part of the experience of travelling in Asia.
Is it safe to swim in the water at Freedom beach Phuket?
As with any beach in Thailand there are some specific risks that you need to be aware of if you are planning to swim in the ocean. Before we talk about these, it is worth pointing out that thousands of people enjoy the waters around Phuket every day without problems. But it is always wise to be aware of the risks and take precautions – it doesn’t matter how many people do it safely if it goes wrong for you.
Strong waves and currents
Firstly watch out for strong waves and rip currents at Freedom beach Phuket. The waves and currents can be especially strong on the west coast and during the rainy season (May – October). Also be aware that Freedom beach is not staffed by lifeguards, so you really are swimming at your own risk here. It is always safer to swim with other people around – but even this does not guarantee safety in the water – remember, if the currents are too strong for you they are probably too strong for your buddy too! We recommend that you never swim out of your depth.
Jellyfish
Another risk in the waters around Thailand are jellyfish. You can get some pretty nasty beasts in the water from time to time. Here are a few things you can do to minimise and control the risks: Firstly keep an eye on local news and reports of jellyfish. Local hotels and resorts normally have information about jellyfish sightings and incidents. Keep your eye on facebook groups too where people often share this type of information. Watch the beach – if jellyfish have washed up on the beach there is a good chance they’re also in the water. Wear a wetsuit or rash guard in the water – although this is not 100% protection, the thick fabric can protect you from some of the barbs. If it doesn’t seem too eccentric, travel with some vinegar in your bag. Treating a jellyfish sting quickly with vinegar can save lives.
