If you go paragliding in Phuket you can soar along a dramatic steep jungle covered coastline. There is a good chance that you will be soaring alongside eagles which can be seen gaining lift from the thermals. My paraglider pilot actually observed the eagles to locate the best thermals. On a clear day you can see many beautiful islands out to sea. If you have a sharp eye, you may also be able to spot wildlife in the jungle canopy. The flight ends with a dramatic landing on a beautiful beach.

What is paragliding?

Paragliding is a way to fly without an engine or any other propulsion systems. Paragliding relies on a large canopy called a wing. The canopy is shaped like a very large parafoil kite. A paraglider takes off from a high hill, mountain or peak. Paragliding in Phuket is a very beautiful way to experience flight and the dramatic, panoramic scenery of the stunning south Phuket coastline and get an awesome adrenaline rush. During the paragliding flight you are seated in a harness seat.
Is it worth paragliding in Phuket?
Yes absolutely. Paragliding in Phuket is well worth it. We highly recommend paragliding in Phuket if you have a sense of adventure and want a thrilling and exhilarating experience. Paragliding in Phuket is carried out at the Black Rock view point on the south tip of the island. This is a stunning view point with an impressive breathtaking view over the ocean and south coast. If you go paragliding in Phuket, you will get to experience the incredible scenery from an utterly unique perspective.
What happens if you go paragliding in Phuket?

If you go paragliding in Phuket your instructor will meet you at the road that leads to the Black Rock view point. We have marked this on the map to help you find the correct spot. From here your instructor will take you right up to the Black Rock view point.

To get to the launch site at Black Rock viewpoint there is a short car ride followed by a short trek up a jungle hill. This takes around 10 – 15 minutes. Once you reach the view point the instructor will set up the wing and make sure all of the equipment is ready. They will also give you a full briefing. After this you will be fitted with your harness and equipment and the instructor will check all the equipment is safe.

If you go paragliding in Phuket it is a tandem paraglider. Therefore you will be fitted to the front of the instructor. When everything is safe and ready the instructor will ask you to run. The idea is to run forward as fast as you can.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an elite athlete for this. By the time you pick up any speed you will notice a significant force pulling you back. This is the wing beginning to lift. You will almost come to a stop and the instructor will check that the wing is fully lifted. If your pilot is happy that it is safe to take off, they will then tell you to keep running. It is amazing how quickly you are lifted off the ground, soaring through the air free as a bird.

Once you are airborne, the instructor will begin to maneuver the paraglider around the ridge looking for thermals to prolong the flight and give you the best possible experience. If you hit a thermal you will feel a force pushing the paraglider higher up into the air. When you are flying the pilot will operate and control the paraglider. You do not need to do anything other than enjoy this incredible experience.

Depending on the conditions the flight itself is likely to take anything between 10 minutes and 30 minutes. The ideal conditions for paragliding in Phuket are hot, sunny and warm with a gentle breeze. Fortunately, the conditions are commonly like this in Phuket especially during the dry season (December – March). Under the right conditions this area has fantastic thermals which provide great lift when you are paragliding.

When your flight comes to an end your pilot will navigate down the hill towards a nearby beach (Nai Harn beach). The approach to the beach is very exciting and exhilarating and again offers you a unique perspective on this beautiful part of the world. From above you can see the hustle and bustle of beach life. Gliding lower and lower over resorts, surfers and swimmers enjoying this beautiful area.

Your pilot will ask you to slip forwards off your seat so you’re in a standing position and when you hit the ground you may need to run a little. I was very impressed by the skill and precision of the pilot landing carefully on a busy beach.
When is the best time to go paragliding in Phuket?
The best time to go paragliding in Phuket is in the dry season (December – March). However, you do get spells of great weather throughout the year. The wettest months in Phuket are from May – October and therefore on average this is the worst time to try paragliding in Phuket.
Is it safe to go paragliding in Phuket?
Like any extreme sport, paragliding comes with inherent risks. However, I think it is fair to say that paragliding feels more scary than it actually is. The pilots at Paragliding Phuket have loads of skill and experience and conduct many safe flights throughout the year. Always make sure you have appropriate travel insurance for any activities that you undertake.
Do you need to be physically fit to go paragliding in Phuket?
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended to go paragliding in Phuket. If you are not sure whether you are medically fit enough or healthy enough to do this activity we recommend speaking to your doctor and also talking to the Paragliding Phuket team. Your weight will make a difference to the flight time. However, if you are paragliding in the right conditions this should not have a significant effect. I am over 90kg and was still able to enjoy a flight time of around 20 minutes. Other health factors to consider include pre-existing medical conditions such as heart problems and knee injuries. Remember, you need to be able to run a little at the start of the flight and also be able to land and run at the end of the flight.
What do you need to bring if you are paragliding in Phuket?
If you’re planning to go paragliding in Phuket on your own, you need to consider what you will do with your valuables whilst you are flying. There is no safe, secure storage at the Black Rock view point. Therefore, you will either need to leave your stuff in your car or bike or take it in the paraglider with you. It is possible to take small valuable items with you in the paraglider. There is a zip pocket where you could put a phone, keys and a wallet. However, the paraglider will not be able to take any larger bags of the valuables.
The instructor will bring a camera to film the whole experience, so don’t worry too much about bringing your own camera equipment. This is probably one of those experiences to immerse yourself in rather than spending a lot of time focusing on filming and photography.
If possible we recommend bringing a water bottle. Consider sun protection, the location is pretty exposed. On a bright day you may also appreciate wearing sunglasses. We also recommend wearing comfortable, well fitted clothing. You will need to bring appropriate footwear.
How do you get to the meeting point for paragliding in Phuket?
The meeting point for paragliding in Phuket is located at the Black Rock junction on the road between Kata bay and Nai Harn Bay. This junction is located just past the Karon viewpoint. If you go paragliding in Phuket, confirm the meeting point and time with your instructor. The meeting point for paragliding in Phuket can be accessed by taxi, rented car or motorbike. There is space to park your car or bike at this location.
From the meeting point the instructor will take you a few kilometers up a dusty road to the start of a jungle trail (they bring a pick up truck). After this you will need to trek up the trail with the instructor. This steep jungle trek takes around 10-15 minutes.
Can you do parasailing in Phuket?

Yes you can do parasailing in Phuket. Don’t confuse paragliding with parasailing. Parasailing is similar to paragliding. When you go parasailing use the same type of wing however you are pulled into the air by a speedboat.

You can also do parasailing in Phuket so it can get a little bit confusing. If you are interested in parasailing and not paragliding then you need to go to Kata Beach at the right time of year and in the right conditions. The best time to do parasailing in Phuket is during the high season and dry weather. When people are offering parasailing at Kata Beach they sometimes use an inflated wing on the beach to show that you can go parasailing.
