The Rafflesia flower is truly unique amongst flowers. For a start Rafflesia is extremely rare and almost impossible to cultivate outside its natural ecosystem. Rafflesia flowers have no leaves, stems or roots. Furthermore this bizarre flower is also parasitic and exudes a strong odor of rotten meat. This attracts carrion flies which the Rafflesia flower uses for cross-pollination.

Rafflesia flowers are best known for being the largest flower in the world, a mature Rafflesia can be between 60cm and 80cm in diameter. There are several locations around peninsular Malaysia where it is possible to see Rafflesia flowers. One of the main destinations in peninsular Malaysia is in the high altitude Cameron highlands. Rafflesia can be seen around the town of Lojing in the Cameron Highlands.

What else is there to do in the Cameron Highlands?

In the Cameron highlands you can also visit the Boh tea plantations, the Mossy Forest, strawberry farms, a lavender farm and go trekking. From the Cameron highlands you can also travel on to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi.

In Sabah it is also possible to see the world’s largest flower. The best place to see Rafflesia flowers in Sabah is close to Mount Kinabalu in a town called Poring. There are several advantages to seeing Rafflesia this way:
- Relatively cheap costing only RM10 – RM20
- Reliable, if there is a flower in bloom they will let you know when you arrive
- Simple, just turn up and see the flowers

There are a couple of Rafflesia Gardens in Poring which may have Rafflesia flowers in bloom. Each Rafflesia Bud takes around 9 months to mature and then flowers tend to bloom for around 5 days only. The Rafflesia Gardens in Poring tend to have several Rafflesia premature buds at any given time.

On average, they are likely to have Rafflesia blooming at least one time every 4 to 8 weeks. So you do still need to be lucky to catch a bud blooming. You can also try calling in advance to see if they have a Rafflesia flower blooming. They generally charge RM10 – RM20 (roughly £2 – £4 or $2.50 – $5) to see these beautiful flowers.

What else is there to do near the Rafflesia Gardens in Sabah?

The Rafflesia Gardens are also located close to the Poring Hotspring and canopy walkway. You can also visit the mountain town of Kundasang and the Desa Dairy farm. This area is also close to mount Kinabalu, a very dramatic high peak. This is a beautiful and challenging mountain to climb but permits are expensive.
