1 Visit a strawberry farm

This is one of the most iconic things to do in the Cameron Highlands. The high altitude of the Cameron Highlands creates a cool wet climate throughout the year. This makes it an ideal location for growing strawberries. There are many strawberry farms around the Cameron Highlands. If you are looking for things to do in the Cameron Highlands take a visit to one of the strawberry farms.

At the strawberry farms in the Cameron Highlands you can learn about strawberry growing, pick your own strawberries, sample decadent treats in the strawberry farm cafe. Most strawberry farms offer treats such as waffles, ice cream, strawberry milkshakes and much more.
It is normally free to visit the strawberry farm itself. However, if you wish to pick your own strawberries you will need to pay based on weight. Expect to pay around RM30 – RM40 to pick a large box of strawberries (500g)

The most famous strawberry farm in the Cameron Highlands is the Big Red strawberry farm. This is a genuinely impressive strawberry farm, however due to its popularity it can’t get very busy – especially during holidays and on weekends. As an alternative, consider visiting the Healthy Strawberry Farm. This lovely little strawberry farm is small and beautiful and the staff are super lovely too. No list of things to do in the Cameron Highlands would be complete without strawberries.

Having a high tea is one of the classic iconic things to do in the Cameron Highlands. And the Boh tea plantations are the REAL DEAL.
There are several different tea plantations around the Cameron Highlands. The cool wet climate makes an excellent environment for growing tea. The tea plantations at the Cameron Highlands normally have beautiful cafes overlooking the valleys with rolling tea terraces. These cafes also serve a selection of very tempting cakes, sandwiches and scones.

The most popular location for high tea in a tea plantation is THE famous Boh tea plantation. The Boh Plantation has a cafe overlooking the panoramic tea terraces. This cafe serves a range of different types of tea and other drinks. It also serves delicious sandwiches, cakes and of course scones with cream and jam. We recommend getting here early as it can get busy. For a full high tea including drinks and food for a family expect to pay between 50 and 100 ringgit. 3 Visit the mossy Forest
DON’T MISS our full guide to the Mossy Forest

If you are looking for adventurous things to do in the Cameron Highlands consider taking a visit to the mossy Forest. The mossy Forest is a beautiful damp rain forest located at the peak of Gunung Brinchang mountain in the Cameron Highlands.

At an elevation of 2032m the mossy Forest is made up of small wiry trees covered in moss and vines. The mossy Forest has aptly been called the Avatar Forest. We love the range of beautiful unique fauna that you can see in the mossy forest. This unique ecosystem results from the consistently cool climate at these high altitudes. Under these conditions the trees grow more slowly compared to low-altitude rainforest. This creates a very strange, eerie and beautiful environment to explore.

The mossy Forest Reserve has a wooden walkway leading through the trees, this is to protect the environment from tourism. There are several points where you can sit down and look out over the beautiful view. It is not possible to drive all the way up to the mossy Forest.

If you attempt to drive up to the peak there is actually a check point where you will be stopped on the way. The main way to get up to the mossy forest now is to take one of the approved jeeps up the hill. Alternatively grit your teeth and walk up.

If you want to visit the mossy forest you need to pay for a Jeep which will take you from the Nova Highlands Hotel all the way to the mossy Forest. You do not need to book these in advance. Just turn up (earlier in the day is better) and speak to a driver. It is likely to cost around RM20 – RM30 (roughly £4 – £6 or $5 – $8) to take a jeep to the mossy forest (return journey). You will probably have around 1 hour to explore the area – arrange this with your driver.

Alternatively you can arrange tours which include a visit to the mossy Forest. There are several tour operators based in Tanah rata offering trips but include the mossy Forest. You will also need to pay the entrance fee to visit the mossy Forest out of all of the things to do in the Cameron Highlands this is one of the more expensive experiences.
Prices to enter the Mossy Forest Reserve:

Adults 13 years old and up RM30 (around £6 or $8)
Children 12 years and below RM15 (around £3 or $4)
No infant tickets available (yeah that’s a bit tight!)

5 Go trekking in the Cameron Valley tea plantation

One of our favorite things to do in the Cameron Highlands is to go trekking in the tea plantation. An amazing spot to go trekking in the tea plantations is in the Cameron Valley. The Cameron Valley tea plantations are very beautiful. There are a couple of tea houses overlooking the Cameron valley where you can buy cakes, hot drinks and scones.

If you walk down into the Cameron Valley you can follow small trails winding through the tea terraces. There is also a river running through the middle of the Cameron Valley with a small waterfall and an area where you can sit down and buy more tea! If you are planning to go trekking in the Cameron Valley you can either do a small walk through the plantations just to enjoy the fresher and beauty of the area. Alternatively you can trek further into the hills around the camera and Valley to enjoy more of the scenery and challenge yourself with a longer route.

Be aware that the climate in the Cameron Highlands is cool and it often rains so come prepared for the weather. There is a small entrance to go trekking in the Cameron Valley. It costs RM3 (12 years and older) to enter the Cameron Valley tea plantations (this is roughly £0.60 or $0.80)
6 Find the world’s largest flower

If you are looking for unique and intrepid things to do in the Cameron Highlands it is possible to arrange trips to search for the incredible Rafflesia flower.
If you are hoping to find the Rafflesia flower in the Cameron Highlands it is strongly recommended that you book onto a guided tour. The local guides will help you navigate safely to find these impressive flowers. The Rafflesia flower is a very unusual and unique species. It is famous for being the largest flower in the world. This flower is also parasitic, and it is carnivorous too – that means it digests insects. It is well-known for its strange and pungent odor. What is particularly remarkable about the Rafflesia flower is the fact that it spends most of its life growing and then only Blooms for a very short period of time (normally around 5 days). This flower is also extremely rare and difficult to find. Despite the best efforts botanists have struggled to get the Rafflesia flower to grow in any conservatories or artificial locations. They only tend to grow in the tropical wild in certain locations with very specific and unique conditions.

The best way to see the Rafflesia flower is to book a tour in Tanah rata. It is likely to cost around RM150 per person (around £30 or $40). Be aware but this is quite a challenging and intrepid expedition and it is not recommended for young children unless they are very competent at walking. Come dressed for jungle trekking and bring plenty of water and mosquito repellant. The cost of the tour should include transportation and the total length of the tour will take 4 to 5 hours depending on how easy it is to find the Rafflesia flowers.
We do recommend booking the tour 4-5 days in advance if possible. This is necessary because the tours can get quite busy at times and the tour agent will need to check with the local guides but flowers are available to see.
