Seasons in Krabi
There are two prominent seasons in Krabi. The rainy season is from May to November, with average rainfall peaking in September and October.
The dry season in Krabi runs from December to April. Towards the end of the dry season, average rainfall does begin to increase.
It is worth recognizing that the rainy season is relatively long in Krabi, with a fairly short dry season coinciding with the Christmas Holidays in December.
You may be tempted to think that it is not possible to visit Krabi in the rainy season. However, this is not correct. Even in the rainy season, you get many dry and sunny days. Rainstorms are often short, intense, and relatively sporadic. Even during the rainiest months of September and October, you may only experience short afternoon downpours.
What is the climate like in Krabi?
The climate in Krabi is hot and humid, with daytime temperatures regularly reaching the high 30s, and nighttime temperatures rarely dipping below 20 degrees Celsius. During the hottest hours of the day from 10 am to 2 pm, the sun can be intensely hot, especially on a clear, cloudless day. We recommend using some protection and staying in the shade during these hours. It really gets cold in Krabi; the coolest time of the day is the early hours of the morning. If you are planning to spend some time in the hills during the early morning hours, we recommend having one extra layer for warmth. It is also useful to have an extra layer for air-conditioned buses and shops.

Krabi is a very popular area of Thailand, and it is relatively busy with tourists throughout the year. This includes tourists from Europe, the UK, the United States, and also from neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore.
The high levels of tourism in this area mean that the average prices (food, transport, and accommodation) are higher than other areas of Thailand. The busiest time of year to visit Krabi is the dry season from December to March. However, Krabi can also be very busy during the Northern Hemisphere summer holidays from June to August. During the busy season, it is important to book your accommodation early because hotels and guest houses can fill up.

This town has many cafes, shops, restaurants, and there are plenty of tour operators around, with loads of accommodation options. If you are looking for a quieter alternative, consider visiting the Khao Sok National Park. This area has similar stunning scenery to Krabi but is much quieter throughout the year.
What is the best time of year for snorkeling and scuba diving in Krabi?
It is possible to do snorkeling and scuba diving throughout the year in Krabi; however, the best water conditions are during the dry season from December to March when average rainfall is relatively low, and the water is generally slightly calmer with fewer currents.
During the rainy season (especially September – October), the visibility in the water around Krabi is more limited. Expect a visibility of 1m – 5m during this season. Anything over 5m is very good during the rainy season. During the dry season (December – March), you can expect better visibility in the water ranging from 5m – 12m. The exact visibility does depend on the specific conditions at the time and on the particular location you choose. The best time of year to visit Krabi for beautiful sunrises and sunsets is actually during the rainy season. This may seem counter intuitive, but very often the conditions in this area mean that the sun sets and rises beneath the cloud coverage. The beautiful red light reflects off the base of the clouds, lighting the sky up with a beautiful palette of colors.
What is the best time of year to visit Krabi for wildlife and photography?
If you are interested in wildlife and photography, we highly recommend that you take a visit to Krabi during the rainy season. In this season, there is less tourism, and so the town is slightly nicer and calmer. This is also a better season to see jungle wildlife and get some stunning panoramic photography of the area. However, if you’re looking for those classic shots with turquoise waters and blue skies, then we highly recommend visiting during the dry season, particularly from December to March.

It is possible to enjoy climbing in Krabi throughout the year. One of the best and most popular spots for climbing is the east side of Tonsai Beach. There are also some climbing spots on Railey East Beach.

Advantages and disadvantages of each season in Krabi
Each of the seasons in Krabi has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, if you are visiting during the dry season (December – March), you can expect some stunning scenery along the coastline with turquoise waters and blue skies. This is also a great season for snorkeling and scuba diving. However, there are some disadvantages of visiting in the dry season; the clear sky can lead to some intensely hot weather. It is very important to stay in the shade and use some protection. These conditions can be particularly intense for young children. Another disadvantage of the dry season is the busyness of this area.
On the other hand, if you choose to visit in the wet season, things are a little quieter and more tranquil. It is easier to find accommodation and book tours and transport when there is less tourism. However, during the wet season, you may get caught out in storms. For example, if you are visiting Tonsai or Railey Beach and you get caught in a storm, there is not a lot of shelter, and you may not have time to jump on a boat to return to town.
