What are the underwater statues in Bali?
The underwater statues in Bali are sculptures which have been placed on the bottom of the ocean as an art project and to raise awareness of the need to protect and conserve our marine ecosystems. There are several different underwater sculpture parks around Bali.
Whether you snorkel, scuba dive or free dive, you will find something truly mesmerizing about the underwater art in Bali. Some of the sea sculptures in Bali are quite hard to access – you would need to take an expensive private boat trip and be prepared to dive quite deep (free diving or scuba diving rather than snorkeling). In this article we are going to feature TWO of the best underwater sculpture parks to visit: The Bask Nest (Gili Meno) AND the Lovina Sea Sculpture Park (North Bali)
1 The Bask Nest Underwater Sculptures
Description of Bask Nest
This is one of the most beautiful sea sculptures around: The Bask Nest comprises 48 life size sculptures of people in a ring. 15 couples are standing in a ring and embracing and there are 18 people lying down in a ring in the middle. This is one of the most famous and popular underwater statues in the area. It is possible to swim down to the middle of the ring and even swim between the statues if you’re careful. These statues are in the shallows just at the edge of the ocean drop off. There is also a shipwreck nearby (around 12 – 15m in depth). And you can often see turtles in the water around 500m north of the Bask Nest.
Location of Bask Nest
Located around 100m off the west coast of Gili Meno (GPS coordinates: -8.349671, 116.050636). You will need to take a boat trip to reach the Gili islands from Bali. Book your Bali to Gili boat trip on Klook. Gili Trawagan is the most popular and busy island with the most hotels and restaurants. We recommend spending a few days on the Gili islands if you have time.
Bask Nest average depth
The average depth is around 3m – 5m depending on the tide. A confident swimmer should be able to dive to the ocean bed in this area. The water in this area is generally very clear. The sculptures are easily visible from the surface and the surrounding waters. Visibility is typically 10m or more in this area.
Challenges at Bask Nest
This area gets quite crowded and the water currents can be strong here. Take a private boat if possible and arrive early. Around 7am – 8am if possible. Make sure you have fins to help with the currents. Use a life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer. This area is also a popular photo spot and it can be hard to get clear photos and avoid other people’s shots. Arriving early is the best chance of getting a quiet spell here.

Many of the local snorkeling trips from Gili Trawangan include a visit here. Group snorkeling trips on Gili Trawagan normally cost 120,000IDR – 150,000IDR and include three destinations (sea sculptures, blue reef and turtle point). Private boat tour normally cost around 500,000IDR – 600,000IDR

2 The Lovina sea sculpture park

There are several statues in the area including a dolphin, a crab, a sea turtle and a seahorse. These free standing statues are around 1 – 2m in size. The statues are separated by distances of around 5 – 10m and are best appreciated individually.
Location of the Lovina sea sculpture park
There is a collection of sea creature statues located approximately 600m off the north coast of Bali approximately 1.40km west of Lovina beach (GPS Coordinates: -8.160096, 115.0119340). These sculptures are located in a shallow section of reef approximately. We don’t recommend trying to access this area without a boat and guide. The shallow section of reef is approximately 200m in width and 400m in length.
Lovina sea sculpture park average depth
These sculptures are around 5 – 6m in depth and spread around a rocky area near the reef. It is easy to appreciate these sculptures from the surface. A strong swimmer will be able to dive down and say hi to the sea creature sculptures. Visibility is typically 10m or more in this area. If you are not a strong swimmer use a life jacket and watch out for currents. Fins are recommended.
Challenges at the Lovina sea sculpture park
These sea sculptures are not as busy as the Bask Nest in Gili Meno. Furthermore the greater depth means that you can normally enjoy these sea sculptures to yourself (as long as you have a good breath hold time). There can be strong currents in the area. We recommend fins. If you’re not a strong swimmer, use a life jacket.
How to organise a trip to the Lovina sea sculpture park
You can arrange private boat trips from Lovina beach. Alternatively book a Lovina Dolphin tour and check that snorkelling and sea sculptures are included (they normally are!) Dolphin tours normally cost around 75,000IDR – 300,000IDR per person ($5 – $20 or £3.50 – £16). A private boat trip is likely to cost around 700,000IDR (around £40 or $45). What do you need to bring to visit the sea sculptures in Bali?
If you’re planning a trip to see the underwater statues in Bali we recommend bringing the following things:

- Towel and a change of clothes

Safety tips – visiting the sea sculptures in Bali
There are always risks if you explore the open water. The currents in the waters around Bali can be strong depending on the season. There is also a risk of jellyfish encounters. Always listen to local instructions and advice. Never touch reef or any sea creatures. If you are not a strong swimmer we strongly recommend using a life jacket and going with a guide. If you are a strong swimmer we do recommend using fins as the currents are very strong in the area.
