2 Swim with turtles

Swimming with wild sea turtles is one of the most memorable things to do in Bali with kids. Turtles can be seen feeding on algae, seagrass and small fish or sleeping on the ocean floor amongst the coral reef. Swimming with wild sea turtles is a great way to help children connect with nature, learn about conservation and experience ocean ecosystems firsthand. There is something deeply exhilarating about swimming next to these beautiful elegant creatures – and we think this experience will stick with your kids.
One of the best ways to swim with turtles in Bali is to head over to the Gili Islands. From here you can regularly see turtles in the water and swim with them in the wild. The best place to swim with sea turtles is a turtle point between Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno. We recommend taking a snorkeling trip on Gili Trawangan and asking a boat driver to help you find turtles. Shared snorkeling trips tend to be cheaper and visit several locations including turtle point. However, if you are really determined to swim with turtles we recommend a private trip. Your guide will be able to devote more time to helping you find turtles and connect with the experience.
Swimming with turtles details

Price: Group snorkeling trips on Gili Trawagan normally cost 120,000IDR – 150,000IDR or 500,000IDR – 600,000IDR for a private boat tour
Location: Turtle point between Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno
Best time to visit: We recommend visiting turtle point early in the morning
Ideal age range: This is best if kids have a reasonable level of confidence in the water.
Swimming with turtles for families – TOP TIPS

Bring goggles or a mask that fit your child. We recommend that kids are reasonably confident in the water for this activity. Being able to hold their breath underwater even for a few seconds will help them engage with this experience. We recommend that kids always swim with a life jacket and are supervised by at least one strong swimming adult. Most boat trips include life jackets (and you can even contact your boat operator in advance to request kid sizes). Many boat trips include a local guide in the water who can help assist you and your kids. If you are swimming with kids in the ocean we recommend that you use fins. Boats are often very willing to let families use life rings in the water as well. This gives kids something additional to hold onto in the water.
3 Take a surf lesson

If you’re looking for fun, active and adventurous things to do in Bali with kids then get them a surf lesson. Surf lessons are a great way to build a child’s confidence and skill. Watch their face when they first catch a wave and celebrate with them when they first learn to balance on a board. Kuta beach is one of the best beaches for surfing in Bali. We loved surfing here.
The conditions are generally pretty good for beginners with small waves (normally less than 1m depending on the conditions). Private one to one surf lessons in Kuta are impressively cheap. We recommend surfing in the late afternoon before sundown. Things are a little calmer at this time and the sun is less intense. Surf lessons are only suitable for kids who are confident in the water and pretty good at swimming. We recommend booking a lesson with an established surf school.
Surf lesson details

Check out 27 Surf School in Kuta. Whatsapp +62 812-3980-2650 and Email: surfinginkuta@gmail.com

Opening hours: 8am – 6pm
Ideal age range: 6 years and older and kids need a reasonable level of confidence in the water.
4 Have a go at a giant swing

Bali is just one giant playground. For older kids there are even giant jungle swings. The giant swings are probably one of the most popular and iconic social media images of Bali. These impressive swings are often located on jungle hillsides or at the rice terraces. There are plenty of places that offer giant swings around Bali. Be aware that there may be age restrictions so check before you get your kids excited about this one. You often need to get harnessed in for safety, and the swings are operated by locals who can help set you up and may assist with photography too.
You will normally need to pay to use the swings as well. But if your kids are able to do one of the giant swings – we think they will love it. The giant swings of Bali will probably be the biggest and most expensive swings to try. Expect to pay around 150,000IDR – 300,000IDR to use a giant swing in Bali (this is roughly £8 – £16 or $10 – $20).
5 Enjoy a beautiful Bali sunset

Bali is all about slowing down, reconnecting with nature and taking moments. Make sure you take a moment to enjoy the stunning southeast Asia sunsets in Bali. The best place to enjoy a beautiful Bali sunset is on a west facing beach. Most beaches have resorts, restaurants and bars where you can grab a drink and enjoy the good vibes. Kuta Beach, Seminyak beach and Batu Bolong are all beautiful west facing beaches – and great for sunsets. If you want to escape the crowds and enjoy the sunset on a more tranquil beach we recommend Batu Bolong. If you want to grab a cocktail and enjoy the good vibes, Seminyak is a great option. Alternatively, enjoy the sunset on the peaceful west coast of Gili Trawangan.
6 Swim at the sea sculptures
Find out more about the epic sea sculptures of Bali

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Bali with kids then check out the stunning underwater sea sculptures. There are several underwater statue parks around Bali – this is a great way to inspire kids and experience some innovative artwork.
The most popular and famous sea sculpture park is called the Bask Nest at Gili Meno. This beautiful sculpture is made from a ring of 48 life size sculptures of people. The average depth at the Bask Nest is around 3 – 5m and the currents can be quite strong at this location. We recommend using find and life jackets. You can visit the Bask Nest on Gili island snorkeling trips: Group snorkeling trips normally cost 120,000IDR – 150,000IDR (£6.50 – £8.00 or $8 – $10) or 500,000IDR – 600,000IDR (£30 – £35 or $35 – $40) for a private boat tour.

Alternatively, check out the Lovina Sea Sculpture park. This is a set of sea creature sculptures including a dolphin, crab and a seahorse. The average depth is around 5 – 6m and the currents can also be strong here too. These sculptures are quieter than the Bask Nest. The best way to visit the Lovina Sea Sculptures is to take a dolphin watching trip and request a stop at the sea sculptures. Lovina dolphin watching trips normally cost 75,000IDR – 300,000IDR per person ($5 – $20 or £3.50 – £16). A private boat trip is likely to cost around 700,000IDR (around £40 or $45).

The Golden Valley is a deep and beautiful jungle valley located in the Munduk region. There are several impressive waterfalls in this area. To trek to these beautiful remote waterfalls you need to park on the road (there are a few small laybys). You can walk down steep jungle trails to see these impressive waterfalls – the trails tend to be well signed in this area.

These beautiful waterfalls are much quieter than the waterfalls located to the south of Bali. If you visit the Golden Valley waterfalls you are likely to have the place to yourself – especially if you hang around for a little while. There is an Eco cafe located at the main Golden Valley waterfall. This is an amazing place to relax, take photos and even try some artwork. We don’t recommend bathing in the water in Bali due to microbes and parasites. If you are planning to visit the Golden Valley bring plenty of water and snacks. Wear good shoes because the trails are steep and muddy in places. We also recommend using sun protection and bringing mosquito repellant.
NOTE: The trail is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. There is limited roadside parking. This is a remote and intrepid activity.
The best way to access these waterfalls is by car. You can rent cars pretty cheaply in Bali and driving allows you to access more remote and quieter locations off the beaten track. Make sure that you are fully qualified and insured to drive in Bali.

What are the best areas to stay in Bali with kids?

If you planning a trip to Bali with kids, you will need to consider the best areas to stay in Bali. Each area has its unique advantages and disadvantages. However, these are some of the best family-friendly areas to stay in Bali:
Kuta – Convenient access to the airport and transport connections. Nice beach & street markets. Super central lots of shops and family friendly places to eat. Also quite a few custom build family activities (e.g. Waterbom Bali and the play spaces at Lippo Mall). Downside of Kuta with kids? Don’t miss our guide to the best things to do in Kuta.
Ubud – Packed with culture and natural beauty. Ubud has plenty of family friendly places to eat (we love Ubud Cinnamon, Mama Mia Italian and Soul Bites). There are also plenty of temples, waterfalls, cooking classes & coffee plantations near Ubud. Also don’t miss the epic rice terraces & monkey forest. Travelling with teens? Why not go for something adventurous and try a jungle resort in the mountains or try glamping in Bali?
When is the BEST time of year to visit Bali with kids?

For most families the best time to visit will depend on your freedom to travel during school holidays.
The dry season in Bali runs from April to September, and is probably the best time of year to visit with kids. During this time, the weather is sunny and dry, with lower humidity and cooler temperatures. This makes it easier to explore the island and enjoy outdoor activities with kids, such as trekking, swimming, beach days and water sports.
The rainy season in Bali runs from October to March, and can be more challenging for families with kids. Rainfall and storms tend to be most severe in December – and activities like dolphin watching may be canceled at the last minute. While Bali is still beautiful and there are plenty of things to do indoors, the frequent rain showers and higher humidity can make it difficult to plan outdoor activities. In this article we have shared some AWESOME indoor activities for kids too.
If you plan to visit Bali with kids, it’s also worth considering school holidays and peak travel times. Bali can be very busy during peak season, which runs from July to August and during the Christmas and New Year period. Prices for accommodation and activities can be higher during these times.
