YES – in our humble opinion, the The Tegenungan waterfall is well worth a visit. We loved visiting this waterfall so much we have even included it in our 10 day Bali itinerary.
Just a heads up before you go. This is a popular tourist attraction and you’re not likely to get this place to yourself. Expect to see plenty of other travelers taking selfies and enjoying this spot. In our opinion Tegenungan waterfall is so impressive, the crowds don’t spoil this spot. What to expect at the Tegenungan waterfall

The Tegenungan waterfall is a part of the Petanu River. There is a single powerful 25m cascade into a deep and slightly terrifying plunge pool which is around 30m wide. This waterfall sprays mist into the air and has a way of taking your breath away. Swimming and paddling are not allowed here due to the strong currents in the water.
Tegenungan Waterfall is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, providing a picturesque backdrop. Once you have parked up, walk past the shops and market stalls. TOP TIPS for visiting the Tegenungan waterfall

Here are a few top tips to help you make the most of your visit to the Tegenungan waterfall:
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the path to the waterfall can be slippery.
- It is not safe to swim at this waterfall: take care using the small bridge to the island.
- Keep an eye on your belongings, as theft can occasionally occur at popular tourist spots.
- Arrive early to avoid crowds. The best time is between 6.30am – 8am.
- Consider bringing some clothing for photography here. There are some great views of the waterfall close up on the small island.
Accessibility at the Tegenungan waterfall
The Tegenungan waterfall is one of the most accessible waterfalls in Bali. If you are unable to walk up and down steps you can see this impressive waterfall from the Omma day club. The Omma Day club has an elevator from the carpark level down to the waterfall level.
The path to Tegenungan Waterfall is well-maintained, the steep steps may pose a challenge for visitors with limited mobility.
The path is not suitable for wheelchairs, prams or strollers. Furthermore, the small wooden bridge leading to the island at the bottom of the waterfall is not suitable for young children or people with limited mobility.
At present there aren’t any good viewpoints of the waterfall from the top of the valley, so the steps are the only route down.
Is the Tegenungan waterfall suitable for families?

Yes, the Tegenungan waterfall is a family friendly destination. Visiting with our two lovely boys (5 and 2 year old) was a lot of fun. However, we would recommend caution and supervision at all times – especially with younger kids. The steep path down to the waterfall is not suitable for prams. Our boys enjoyed this part of the trek – but they did find the climb back up a little challenging.
For younger kids you may want to give the island part a miss. There is a precarious wooden bridge to the island that isn’t really suitable for families with younger kids. So overall, we think this is a great attraction for families – just take care, especially with younger kids. There are plenty of shops and food places in the area to get the essential snacks and supplies.
What should you bring to the Tegenungan waterfall
Here are a few things that we recommend bringing with you:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A light weight rain coat
- A waterproof bag to protect your belongings
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated
- Enough money for entrance and to cover extras
