The nightlife in Canggu is more laid-back than in Kuta and Seminyak, with many bars and live music venues catering to a more relaxed crowd.

Ubud is situated in the scenic central region of Bali. It is hard to capture the vibes of this beautiful unique little town. 

Ubud is a fusion of new and old. Boutique coffee shops are situated amongst traditional temples and lush rice paddies. The town has authentic local vibes, but it can also get pretty busy – especially in peak season. There is a unique antithesis of traditional Balinese culture and international tourism here. Sadly, Ubud can have a lot of congestion on the narrow roads. For short journeys around town we recommend motorbike or walking. Ubud is genuinely very pretty and has a lot going for it. Here are some things to do in Ubud: You can take cooking classes, visit spas, explore art galleries and visit temples like Saraswati temple. There is also a wide range of food available. Monkey forest is one of the most iconic and popular attractions in town. In the surrounding area you can visit temples like Tirta Empul water temple and Goa Gajah cave temple. Ubud has a very good range of shops, cafes and restaurants. You can find plenty of restaurants serving western and international food. You can get everything from sushi to greek food in Ubud. Despite being a popular destination in Bali, Uluwatu still feels spacious and not overcrowded. There is a nice mix of luxurious restaurants and bars in Uluwatu, with some local places too.

One of the main attractions in Uluwatu is the Uluwatu temple, a panoramic cliff top temple with epic views. This is a very panoramic location for sunset. Beware of the monkeys in this area! They can be quite territorial and aggressive and steal phones, sunglasses and jewelry. Kecak fire dance (150,000IDR per person, roughly £7.50 or $10). The show timing is from 5.15pm – 7pm. Explore the beaches. This is also one of the best areas to surf in Bali with some pretty challenging waves.

7 Mount Batur

Mount Batur is a volcano located in the north east of Bali. When we are talking about this area we include several towns around Batur: Kintamali town is situated on a high ridge to the west of Mount Batur. Kedisan is a town located to the south of Batur lake and Songan is a town along the northwest coast of Batur lake.

Batur vibes

The towns around Mount Batur are more remote and tranquil than the main tourist hubs in the South of Bali. This is a great area to experience authentic Balinese culture and local life. This area has a lovely peaceful vibe and on average prices are a little lower than the south of Bali. Although there are plenty of travelers in the area – you really get a sense of being “off the beaten track” and away from the crowds. There are also some epic viewpoints in this area overlooking Batur lake and mount Batur. The high altitude also leads to a colder climate here – the weather can change quickly in this area. Expect anything from clear sunny days, to cloudy and stormy weather. 

What are the best things to do near mount Batur?

The main things to do around mount Batur are trekking, hot springs and glamping. Taking a sunrise trek up mount Batur is a very popular activity. The trek is moderately challenging and the conditions vary from day to day. Most treks start in the early hours of the night to get to the summit by sunrise. It is possible to trek up Batur independently but most people take a guided trek. The geothermal hot springs are located in the Songan region along the northwest side of lake Batur. There are a few glamping spots around as well. Don’t miss Kubah Glamping in Kedisan – they have an inflatable dome tent for very good prices. Up on the ridge towards Kintamali you can also find several amazing coffee shops with breathtaking views.

There are less restaurants and international food options. The shops in this area are more geared towards locals than towards travelers. There are a couple of convenience stores in the area.

8 Munduk

Munduk vibes

Munduk is located high in the hills of northern Bali. This is one of the most beautiful and remote areas to stay in Bali. Munduk is a small village but we are talking about the region around the village (an area north of Buyan Lake). Munduk has rolling jungle hills and stunning views. This area has a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.

There are a handful of luxurious resorts and some small villages with a limited selection of shops. If you are planning to stay in Munduk we recommend having access to your own car or bike. Munduk is one of the best areas in Bali for “off the beaten track” adventures. There are also a handful of luxury resorts in the area. Be aware that the journey from south Bali to Munduk is likely to take 2 – 3 hours. Some of the jungle roads around Munduk are very narrow and steep. 

What are the best things to do in Munduk?

Munduk is a great area for trekking – there are jungle trails, viewpoints and hills in this area. Munduk has several beautiful waterfalls. Don’t miss the Golden Valley waterfall and the Munduk waterfall. There are also some beautiful coffee plantations in the Munduk region. Wanagiri coffee plantation is one of the most ethical and authentic plantations in Bali – and this is located in Munduk. If you’re going as far north as Munduk we also recommend a visit to Lovina which is a great place for dolphin watching and also the Banjar jungle hotspring. 

The small handful of shops you can find in this area are geared towards locals living in the area. We recommend buying whatever you need before you adventure into this intrepid region of Bali.

9 Bedugul

Bedugul vibes

Bedugul is a tranquil northern town in Bali. This town has the feel of “somewhere that you pass through” rather than a destination in itself. Having said that, there are some iconic attractions in Bedugul – most notably the Ulun Danu Lake Temple. Whilst Bedugul does have a few prominent attractions, there is a sense that this town is more geared towards locals than visitors. Bedugul does have calm and peaceful vibes. Unless you are on a slower itinerary we recommend Bedugul as a stop off on the way to Lovina rather than a place to stay.

The most iconic and famous attraction in Bedugul is the Ulun Danu lake pagoda. This is actually one of the most iconic and famous temples in Bali – so it is well worth a visit if you’re interested in culture and you have the time. There is also the botanical gardens, some strawberry farms and the Handara Bali gate located in Bedugul. 

What shops are available in Bedugul?

Bedugul has a small range of shops including convenience stores, cafes and some local food shops. Bedugul is not a great destination for shopping (compared to Kuta, Seminyak or Ubud). But there are some basic amenities available.

Lovina vibes

Lovina is much more quiet and chilled than the south of Bali. The main hub of Lovina is at Lovina beach – there are plenty of guest houses, spas, cafes, some shops & markets. This area has nice laid back vibes. We recommend spending at least 2 – 3 days in Lovina. Lovina is actually pretty large – it is the biggest town in the north of Bali – located right on the north coast. 

What are the best things to do in Lovina?

The best thing to do in Lovina is to take a sunrise dolphin watching tour. You can swim with dolphins and snorkel at a section of shallow reef. There is also a sea sculpture park in the area. Near Lovina you can also visit the Banjar jungle hot spring and the Brahmavihara-Arama temple. 

What shops are available in Lovina?

Lovina isn’t a great location for shopping. Although there is a very good range of shops available. Lovina has plenty of cafes, restaurants and convenience stores around. The quality and range of food in Lovina is not as good as Ubud or Kuta – but you can still find a pretty good selection of food around.

11 Amed beach & the east coast

Amed vibes

Amed is a small town located on the tranquil east coast of Bali. This town has peaceful hippy vibes. Located on the east coast this area is very chill with some great ocean views and some amazing views of mount Agung. Amed has small boutique cafes and guest houses. Prices are lower here compared to the touristy south. 

What are the best things to do in Amed?

This is the BEST area in Bali for snorkeling, diving and freediving. There are several diving and  freediving schools located in Amed. Check out the Apnea freediving school in Amed for an epic range of courses. The water in this area is clear and packed with reef and sea life. There is also an epic shipwreck in the area. The USAT liberty shipwreck ranges in depth from 5m at its shallowest to 15m at the deepest point.

Amed has a small selection of shops. However, this is not a great place for shopping. There are a few small convenience stores located on the coast road in Amed.

12 Gilimanuk & northwest Bali

Gilimanuk vibes

The northwest corner of Bali is arguably the most tranquil and untouched area of Bali. It is a long way from the tourist hubs of the south. Gilimanuk is very peaceful but not well set up for tourists. This town is much more like “typical Indonesia” than Bali. So if you’re looking to get off the beaten track, escape the crowds and experience somewhere unique – northwest Bali may be for you. 

What are the best things to do in Gilimanuk?

Most people visit this area to either escape the crowds or to travel to Java by boat. There are a few lovely resorts in the area and also a national park (the North West Bali National Park). This is a great area for wildlife spotting and peaceful beaches.

Gilimanuk has several convenience stores selling a range of snacks and drinks. There are also local cafes and restaurants in the area.
