Why stay in Lovina?

Banjar hot springs lovina things to do in Bali

Lovina is a small town on the north coast of Bali roughly 90km north of Kuta by road. This is a big journey. So why go all the way up to the north? Why visit Lovina? Firstly, the north coast of Bali is very peaceful and tranquil compared to the crowded south. So if you’re looking for a quieter area in Bali – Lovina is a great choice. There are also several epic attractions that draw people to Lovina. The main thing to do in the area is swimming with dolphins in Lovina Bay. You can also see waterfalls, temples and hot springs in the north of Bali. This is also a great area for wilderness, trekking and coffee plantations. On the way to Lovina you can also see the iconic Ulun Danu lake temple or mount Batur.

Hotels in Lovina – What to expect

Lovina town

Most hotels in Lovina are small independent properties. Lovina is a beautiful but relatively remote town in the north of Bali. You can’t find large hotel chains or big resorts in Lovina. Instead you can find small guest houses and boutique hotels. Here are a few things to watch out for with hotels in Lovina:

  • Most hotels in Lovina include a simple breakfast (always check when you book)
  • Many hotels in Lovina are either located close to the beach or they are surrounded by lush green rice paddies
  • There are several restaurants and cafes – especially in the area close to Lovina beach
  • The most common problem with hotels in Lovina is weak wifi. If you require the internet for work we recommend having a local sim card with some data so you can set up a hot spot if you’re having wifi problems

What is the best time of year to visit Lovina?

Golden valley from the road

Lovina has a hot tropical climate throughout the year. The humidity is typically high and we recommend wearing light loose fitting clothing. Also it is worth knowing that the weather can vary throughout the year – with sunny days and rainy days to be expected at any time of the year. The climate in Bali is seasonal with a hot wet season and a hot dry season.

The dry season in Lovina runs from May to September, making this an ideal time to visit. During this time, you can expect sunny skies, low humidity, and warm temperatures, making it perfect for activities like swimming, snorkeling, and diving. However, since this is the high season for tourism, places may also be more busy. If you plan to visit during this time, it’s recommended to book your accommodations and activities in advance.

On the other hand, the wet season in Lovina runs from October to April, with the most rainfall in December. While the weather may be less predictable during this time, you can still enjoy plenty of activities in the area. The rainy season is ideal for those interested in lush greenery and cultural experiences. During this time, you can participate in temple festivals and ceremonies, explore the nearby waterfalls, and enjoy the cooler temperatures. During stormy weather activities (such as dolphin watching) may be canceled at short notice.

How do you get to Lovina?

Don’t miss our full guide – how to get around in Bali

Lovina is located on the north coast of Bali. The journey from Kuta is around 90km and takes 2 – 3 hours.  We recommend planning a few stops along the way. For example you could visit Ubud and check out the rice terraces. You could also stop at Bedugul town and see the iconic Ulun Danu Beratan lake temple. Bali doesn’t have an established public transport network – this can make it more expensive and challenging to get around the island. There are several ways to travel to Lovina in Bali.

1 Rent a motorbike

The cheapest way to get to Lovina Bali is to rent a motorbike. Bike rental in Bali is cheap, simple and readily available. You can rent bikes from many shops and guest houses. Bike rental in Bali normally costs around 100,000IDR – 200,000IDR per day (roughly £5 – £10 per day or $6 – $12). You can normally get cheaper deals if you are taking a longer rental period.

2 Take a shared minibus

Bali shuttle bus

One of the most convenient ways to travel to Lovina is to take a shared minibus. If you’re looking for a good company check out Perama Tour: 250,000IDR per person with a minimum booking of two people (this is roughly £14 or $16 per person).

3 Rent a car and drive

Bali road trip

A great way to travel to Lovina is to rent a car and drive. The cheapest way to get a good rental deal on a car in Bali is to contact a local rental company and negotiate a deal. Expect to pay 200,000IDR – 400,000IDR per day (roughly £10 – £20 per day or $12 – $24). A big advantage of a rental car is the freedom to stop, explore, go at your own pace and use the car to explore Lovina.

4 Take a taxi

Another way to get to Lovina is to use a private taxi. You can get taxis on the Grab taxi app. Private cars from Kuta to Lovina are likely to cost around 700,000IDR – 1,000,000IDR (roughly £40 – £50 or $50 – $60) .

What is the best way to get around in Lovina?

Car Bali

You can use Grab to order taxis in Lovina. You may find taxis add up if you’re exploring the area. Many of the attractions are around 10km out of town (or more). This can make it expensive to use taxis to get around. What’s more, if you’re exploring more remote attractions you may not have phone signal to use Grab and taxis may not respond to Grab requests.

If you decide to explore the Lovina area by motorbike be aware that some of the roads in the hills to the south of Lovina are very steep – and the roads are not suitable for bikes. We recommend sticking to the main roads by bike and don’t take shortcuts!
