Cultural and Religious Significance of Banjar Hot Spring

Banjar Hot Spring is more than just a relaxing retreat; it is also a site of cultural and religious importance for the local Balinese people. The hot spring’s origins can be traced back to the 8th century when it was believed to have been discovered by a Javanese priest named Rsi Markandeya. The priest and his disciples built a temple at the site, which later became known as the Brahma Vihara-Arama Buddhist Monastery.

Health Benefits of taking a tip at the Banjar hot springs

Banjar health benefits

The water at the Banjar Hot Spring offers potential health benefits due to the mineral-rich waters and warm temperatures: Firstly, soaking in the water improves circulation. The warm water helps dilate blood vessels, promoting better blood flow and increased oxygen delivery to the body’s tissues. The warm water also can also reduce joining pain and soothe aches and pain. water and the heat help to alleviate tension in muscles and joints, providing relief for those suffering from arthritis, fibromyalgia, or general muscle soreness. Also the minerals in the geothermal waters are thought to improve skin health. The mineral content of hot spring water, including sulfur, can have positive effects on skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

This may all sound like hippytastic pseudo science! Even if you’re not convinced of these benefits – one thing is for sure! Taking a dip in the geothermal waters is super relaxing and a great way to relax and unwind!

Are the Banjar hot springs safe to visit?

Banjar green water geothermal

Yes, these hot springs are a safe place to visit. There are a few risks you need to know about:

Be aware that the water near the source at the Banjar hot springs can be pretty hot. Always take care to test the water before you immerse yourself. Remember to bring plenty of fresh water and stay well hydrated. The tropical heat of Bali and the hot springs can lead to dehydration. The warm outdoor waters are also a good home to microbes – we don’t recommend bathing at Banjar if you have any cuts or open wounds. Also be aware that you are inhaling sulphurous gases here (that’s why there is an eggy smell). This can be bad for you if you stay in the waters too long. Always check with your doctor if you are pregnant or have any medical conditions.

TOP TIP: don’t wear any light or white swimwear in the waters. The minerals can stain white clothing!

Things to bring to the hot springs

  • Swimwear and towel: You’ll need a bathing suit or appropriate swimwear to enjoy the hot spring. Avoid wearing light or white-colored swimwear, as the minerals in the water can stain them.
  • Water shoes or sandals: The ground around the hot spring may be slippery or rocky, so it’s a good idea to wear water shoes or sandals for better traction and comfort.
  • Sunscreen: We recommend SPF50 or more – especially if you plan to spend an extended amount of time outdoors.
  • Drinking water: Stay hydrated by bringing a water bottle with you. The combination of the tropical heat and the warm water of the hot spring can lead to dehydration.
  • Change of clothes: After soaking in the hot spring, you might want to change into fresh, dry clothes for the rest of your day’s activities.
  • You can bring valuables along with you (cash, phone etc) but we recommend leaving these in a locker – which can feel risky. So bring enough cash to cover entry and some spare – but don’t bring too much.
