Religious, cultural and historic significance of the Western Wall

The Western Wall (also known as the Wailing Wall) holds profound religious, cultural, and historic significance for people around the world, especially Jewish people.

The Western Wall is the last remaining remnant of the Second Temple which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. It is thought that this section of wall was built by Herod the Great around 19BC. So this was also part of the temple that Jesus visited. Pilgrims and worshippers from all corners of the globe visit the Western Wall to offer their prayers, often placing handwritten notes in the cracks between its massive stones.

Culturally, the Western Wall is a testament to the enduring Jewish heritage. It is a place of unity and reflection, drawing Jews from diverse backgrounds together in shared devotion. The Wall also serves as a backdrop for important life events, such as bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings, and other celebrations, cementing its role in Jewish cultural life.

Historically, the Western Wall bears witness to centuries of human history, conquests, and struggles. It stands as a silent witness to the turbulent past of Jerusalem and the Jewish people. From the grandeur of the Second Temple to the destruction and subsequent rebuilding of Jerusalem, the Wall has witnessed it all. It has been a focal point of historic events, from the time of King Herod to the Six-Day War in 1967 when Jerusalem was reunified under Israeli control. The Western Wall is more than just a physical structure. It is a profound embodiment of faith, culture, and history. It serves as a bridge connecting the contemporary world with the ancient past.

Here are some cultural tips if you are visiting the Western Wall. Remember, anyone of any faith (or no faith) is welcome to visit the Western Wall. As long as you act respectfully, people will be very welcoming at the Western Wall. Here are our TOP TIPS for visiting the Western wall:

  • Go to the appropriate section:  Note that there are separate sections for men and women at the Western Wall. Respect this division, and make sure to visit the appropriate area. Children can go with the mother into the female section (or male children may go with the father into the male section).
  • Dress respectfully: Dress modestly out of respect for the religious significance of the site. Both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees. Avoid clothing that is too revealing.
  • Wear a Head Covering: It is customary for men to wear a head covering (kippah or yarmulke) while at the Western Wall. You can borrow one for free on the way into the male section and return it when you leave.
  • Keep it calm and quiet: The Western Wall is a place of prayer and reflection. Maintain a quiet and contemplative demeanor while in its vicinity.
  • Approaching the Wall: Give people space at the wall. If it is crowded you may need to wait to get a space. Many visitors bow slightly or touch the Wall with their hand, but this is optional.
  • Photography: While photography is generally allowed, avoid taking photos of people praying without their permission. Be discreet with your camera to avoid disturbing others.
  • Leave a Donation: It is free to visit the Western Wall. While not mandatory, leaving a small donation to support the upkeep of the site is appreciated.

How much does it cost to visit the Western Wall?

It is completely free to visit the Western Wall, and the Western Wall is open to visitors throughout the day and night. We also love the fact that anyone is welcome to visit the Western Wall and can even walk right up to the wall, whether you are Jewish or not.

How do you get to the Western Wall?

Jerusalem old city markets

To get to the Western Wall, you will need to do a little bit of walking. The Western Wall is located in the Jerusalem Old City, and there are no cars, bikes, or buses allowed in the Old City (except the occasional motorbike!). Therefore, you will need to walk through the Old City to reach the Western Wall. When you reach the Western Wall, you will need to pass through a security checkpoint. There are X-ray bag scanners and armed security guards posted at the security checkpoints.

If you are not staying in the Jerusalem Old City, you may need to take a bus to one of the city gates. Buses in Jerusalem are cheap, reliable, and efficient. It costs 5.5 NIS (£1 or $1.20) for a local bus journey in Jerusalem. Alternatively, you can take a taxi to get to the Jerusalem Old City. Taxis in Jerusalem are relatively expensive, and you may need to negotiate with a driver to get a reasonable price. If you do not like the idea of negotiating with a driver, you can use the Gett taxi app to get a fair local price. This, of course, relies on having a local SIM card with some mobile data. Expect to pay 25NIS – 50NIS for a taxi in Jerusalem (roughly £5 – £10 or $6 – $12).

When is the best time to visit the Western Wall?

We visited the Western Wall several times during our trip to Jerusalem, including a visit during the day and visiting in the evening. The Western Wall was busy both during the day and during the evening.

During the day, the temperatures are high, and the Western Wall is a very exposed area with little shade from the sun. Therefore, if you plan to visit the Western Wall during the day, we recommend wearing sunscreen and either bringing an umbrella or sun hats.

We also visited the Western Wall late in the evening and really enjoyed this experience. We found that the Western Wall was surprisingly busy late in the evening.

On the Jewish Sabbath (Friday evening to Saturday evening) and during major Jewish holidays, the Western Wall can be especially crowded. Plan your visit accordingly.

Although the Western Wall is one of the most important religious sites for Jews around the world, they are very welcoming and accepting of children here. If anything, we had the sense that locals were very happy to see us visiting the Western Wall with our children. We noticed several older Orthodox Jews smiling pleasantly at us, and this made us feel very welcome as a family.

Not only is the Western Wall family friendly. A visit to the Western Wall is a great way to get some worldschooling into your travels. Kids can learn about the fascinating and rich history of this area. This is also a great place for kids to slow down and connect with the culture.
