Things to know before you visit Tioman Island

Don’t miss our FULL GUIDE on The BEST way to get to Tioman Island

BEFORE we share some of THE BEST things to do in Tioman island, here are some important things that you need to know about.

Tioman island is a relatively unpopulated and remote island located off the southeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Tioman Island is particularly beautiful due to the large impressive jungle-covered Mountains. However, this is one of the LESS developed places in Malaysia – so be prepared for a rural experience in Tioman island.

However, this remote location presents some challenges. For example, certain products can be difficult to find or expensive on Tioman island. There may also be some supply issues during bad weather and storm season. Some things are readily available: Sea food, dry snacks (nuts and crisps), water. Other things may be variable: For example nappies, chocolate, specific drinks.

Tioman island is a lovely and relaxing place. Many of the shops and cafes have irregular opening hours and close during certain parts of the day. You may even find that places may say they will open up later in the day and do not open. This unreliability is both charming and challenging. We recommend relaxing and getting into the chilled vibes of the island.

There are plenty of things to do in Tioman. BUT being in such a remote location means that it can be very hard or even not possible to to organize activities in advance. So if you like to get all your ducks in a row before your trip to Tioman, this may not be possible. It is very easy to organize trips and activities when you arrive in Tioman. There are tour operators around the island. Also most hotels and resorts will be able to help you arrange activities and trips around the island.

1 Sea Kayaking

If you are looking for adventurous things to do in Tioman Island, consider taking a sea kayaking trip. Sea Kayaking is a LOT of fun and you don’t need a lot of experience to jump in a Kayak and go. We recommend ONLY doing sea Kayaking in nice calm weather. Stay close to the beach (especially if you don’t have much experience). Expect to pay around RM30 for a double Kayak for 1 hour.

If you are struggling to barter for the price, try asking for longer at the same price (e.g. 1.5 hours rather than 1 hour). If they are not too busy they may let you do this. You can rent Sea Kayaks from Sun, Sea, Surf on Juara Bay. The staff are very friendly and the equipment is great.

TOP TIP: If you want to mix it up – you can rent snorkels, masks and fins as well as a Kayak and try Kayaking to some great snorkeling locations. However, only do this if you have someone to look after the Kayak whilst you snorkel.

2 Stay at the Japamala Jungle Resort

If you are looking for romantic things to do in Tioman Island why not book a stay in one of the incredible luxurious resorts? This may be one of the most expensive things to do in Tioman Island, but it is also one of the most enjoyable and memorable ways to experience this tropical Paradise. One of the best resorts on Tioman Island is the luxurious Japamala resort

The Japamala resort has the iconic and beautiful pier leading out to the ocean over turquoise waters. Turn back at the end of the pier for a stunning and panoramic view of the mountainous Tioman Island. The Japamala Resort also offers decadent and luxurious private villas nestled into the coastal jungle of Tioman Island. We love the rich regal dark wood theme running throughout this resort, creating an aesthetic synergy with the lush tropical surroundings. The Tioman resort offers two exquisite dining options serving a fusion of Asian and Western Cuisine.

Don’t miss the AMAZING Penghulu’s House. This large villa with a private pool is spacious and impressive. This would be a perfect place for a honeymoon, wedding anniversary or special birthday celebration. We love the way the resort is lit up in the evenings to create a magical romantic ambiance. Another great reason to stay at Japamala is that they can help you organize other exciting things to do in Tioman such as kayaking, diving, snorkeling and more. Expect to pay around £250 – £650 per night to stay at the Japamala Tioman Resort.

3 Search for Rafflesia

One of the most unique things to do in Tioman is to see a Rafflesia flower. These elusive beauties spend months growing before they bloom for 5 days and then die. They also lay claim to being the LARGEST flowers in the world. A mature Rafflesia flower can weigh up to 10kg and reach 1m across in length. Rafflesia flowers are sometimes affectionately known as “corpse flowers” due to their putrid odor of rotting meat. This attracts carrion flies who help the Rafflesia pollinate. It is possible but NOT easy to see a Rafflesia in Tioman so we recommend that you communicate with local tour operators who can liaise with local guides to advise whether you will be able to see these short term bloomers. Although Rafflesia are biologically classified as flowers – they seem to break all of the rules of classification. They are parasitic, they have no leaves, stem or roots. This may be one of the most unique things to do in Tioman island – but it is also possibly the most memorable – if you are lucky enough to see one of these botanical beauties.

4 Snorkeling trip

Don’t miss our full guide on Tioman island snorkelling trips

A Snorkeling trip is one of the best things to do in Tioman island. A Tioman snorkeling trip is an amazing way to explore the beautiful clear waters and coral reef around this Paradise Island. You can generally find pretty clear waters with a visibility of 5 – 10m and you can see a wide range of sea life including barracuda, reef sharks, sea turtles, clown fish and much much more. We recommend that you take a snorkeling trip that includes Pulau Tulai (a small island located in the Tioman marine park to the Northwest of Tioman island). Malang island and Teluk Genting.

It is not necessary to organize your snorkeling trip a long time in advance. We recommend arranging it 1-2 days in advance. Prices depend on your location on the island. Expect to pay more if you are based in a more remote location on the island (e.g. Juara bay OR on a resort along the secluded coastline). You can either book tours on a sharing basis. This is cheaper BUT relies on having around 6 people minimum. OR you can book private snorkeling tours. This is more expensive. If you would like to take a snorkeling trip from Kampong Tekek, Adult tickets start at RM65 for a shorter simple coastal trip up to RM100 for a longer trip including the Marine Park. Children’s tickets range from around RM30 to RM50.

Private boat tours range between depending on the number of destinations and the size of the boat. Expect to pay around RM350 – RM800 for a private boat tour. Tioman snorkeling trip is not likely to include food or drinks. Therefore, we recommend planning to bring your own lunch and plenty of water. You may also need to arrange rental of masks and fins for an additional cost (around RM10 – RM20). Discuss this with your tour agent prior to the trip.

A snorkeling trip really is a TOP PICK of our things to do in Tioman.

  • For a snorkeling trip in the Juara Bay area contact the Juara Mutiara Resort +60 419 3161

5 Explore the Mangroves

There is such a diversity of things to do in Tioman. Tioman island also has a Mangrove forest located at the north side of Juara Bay. The best way to explore the mysterious and beautiful mangrove forest is to rent a Kayak for 1 – 2 hours from Sun, Sea, Surf on Jurara Beach (around RM30 per hour) and paddle up the mangrove river. We recommend exploring the Mangrove forest during high tide so that the river is sufficiently deep. If you are interested in exploring the Mangroves on an organized tour we recommend asking a tour agent in the Juara Bay area. This is likely to cost more than exploring the mangroves independently.

6 Take a dive

Don’t miss our FULL GUIDE on organising a diving trip in Tioman

Another great way to enjoy the clear waters and sea life around Tioman island is to take a diving trip. Diving is one of the more expensive things to do in Tioman island. There are various ways to dive depending on your budget and level of experience. If you have never tried diving before we recommend an introductory fun dive. They will teach you the basics of diving and an instructor will guide you through the dive, helping you with the equipment.

If you have trained in the past you can also do refresher courses. Alternatively you can do a diving course such as open water. On diving courses you are trained on the theory and practice of scuba diving. There are lots of diving resorts around Tioman island. If you are looking to learn to dive check out the Tiongman Diving Lodge located on Juara beach.

For scuba diving in Tioman expect to pay the following prices:

Fun dives around Tioman: RM100 – 120 per dive (depending how many dives you do)

Fun dives around the marine park: RM200 – 250 per dive

Open water course: RM1,250

Fun dives around 45 – 50 minutes on average

7 Spot flying foxes

If you’re looking for Flying foxes are beautifully bizarre. Their little faces genuinely look like that of a fox. Their bodies are covered in fur like a fox. And yet their bodies are bat shaped with large wings. A great place to see flying foxes in Tioman is in the palm trees along the road near Juara Bay. They tend to hang out in the trees during the day.

In the cool of the evening the flying foxes take flight to find food. There is something majestic as these large bats swoop around. If you have never seen flying foxes before this should definitely be on your list of things to do in Tioman.

8 Eat Fresh Seafood

One of the perks of being on a tropical island is the amazing fresh seafood. This is one of our personal favorite things to do in Tioman. We found this lovely BBQ restaurant on Juara Beach. (The BBQ restaurant is located next to the Sun, Surf, Sea Sports Centre on Juara beach). They serve BBQ fish and chicken each evening. If possible drop by in the afternoon to place your order so they know how much fish to buy at the market.

Seafood is relatively cheap but not bottom dollar. For example, for a juicy filet of BBQ fish and rice expect to pay around RM25. The freshness, quality and size make this great value for money. And the great news is Seafood is pretty abundant in Tioman. There is a charm to this. Take whatever Seafood is available on the day.

9 Transparent Kayaking (honest review!)

things to do in tioman kayak

Another thing to do in Tioman island is transparent kayaking. There is a transparent kayak available on Juara beach from a shop next to the Juara Mutiara Restaurant (it can be a little tricky to find so ask around). Although we are recommending this as a thing to do in Tioman, we strongly recommend that you manage your expectations. The transparent kayaks available at Juara Bay are not very stable in the water. These single kayaks may allow you to get a couple of nice insta shots, however we recommend that you come prepared to get wet.

Wear a life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer. The transparent kayaks are not designed for exploring or going far. And they are definitely not designed for rough waters. Just a short paddle in the shallow waters and a giggle. We only recommend this during calm periods. You can enjoy watching out for fish and coral. The transparent kayaks available at Juara bay are relatively expensive, costing around RM50 per hour for a single clear Kayak.

10 Explore the rock pools

If you are looking for family friendly things to do in Tioman consider checking out the beautiful rock pools around the beaches. The rock pools and rivers close to the beaches in Tioman are a great way to spot sea life with kids. This is the perfect way to explore the magical ocean biodiversity especially if your kids are too young to go snorkeling and swimming.

Watch out for small fish, hermit crabs and sea cucumbers. As ever we recommend supervising children closely in these environments and watching out for the tide and also sharp rocks and sea urchins.

11 Sunset walk on the beach

If you are looking for relaxing and enjoyable things to do in Tioman, make sure you take a sunset walk on the beach. Whether you are on a west facing or an east facing beach sunset is a very beautiful time in the tropics. The sky lights up with a rich palette of colours and the jungles come to life with nocturnal creatures. THE BEST place to see an amazing sunset over the water is at the Genting Jetty and the Tekek area, both of which are west facing.

12 See the Chameleons

Chameleon Tioman island

Many of our things to do in Tioman involve enjoying the beautiful biodiversity and wildlife on the island. In Tioman it is also possible to take a tour to go and see the Chameleon Forest Dragon. The chameleon forest dragon is endemic to Java, Sumatra and Tioman island. If you do go on a trek to spot these beautiful reptiles you are likely to see plenty of other wildlife on this beautiful island.

13 Visit the Juara Turtle Project

ONE of the most meaningful things to do in Tioman is visiting the Juara Turtle Project. The Jurara Turtle Project is a small beautiful turtle sanctuary located on the south part of Juara Bay. This compassionate project is committed to the preservation, conservation and protection of turtles on Tioman island. They have conservation talks and also let you see the turtles and the hatching area. AND by visiting you are also supporting their amazing work. They have a nesting project where turtle eggs buried in the sand are protected by cages. When the turtle hatch they look after the baby turtles until they are big enough to be released safely into the ocean. It costs RM10 to enter the sanctuary which is open from 10am – 1pm and 3pm – 5pm. This should definitely be on your list of things to do in Tioman.

14 Explore the island by boat

One of THE BEST ways to explore the rugged beautiful jungle coastline of Tioman is to take a boat trip around the island. There are different types of boat linking up various destinations. Although we recommend this as one of our Things to Do in Tioman – this may well be a necessity to get to some of the remote loctions around Tioman. There are actually very few roads on this island and they only link up the main towns.

If you take a boat trip around Tioman we recommend that you PLAN which beaches you hope to visit and discuss timings with your boat driver. Alternatively book a shared boat between towns – this will be cheaper and still lots of fun.

15 See Ali’s waterfall

AND finally if you are looking for fun adventurous things to do in Tioman take a visit to Ali’s waterfall – located on the road between Tekek Beach and Juara Bay. This lovely waterfall is FREE to visit and comes highly recommended amongst the things to do in Tioman. It is not the biggest waterfall you will experience in Malaysia but it is still a great way to immerse yourself on the nature of Tioman. Ali’s waterfall is only a few minutes walk from the road. This waterfall is most impressive during the rainy seasons or after periods of wet weather.

What are THE BEST places to stay in Tioman?

With so MANY amazing things to do in Tioman make sure you also find an amazing place to stay. Honestly. We found accommodation on Tioman pretty tricky. Prices are pretty high and it is hard to find places that actually give you good value for money. We recommend going in at the budget end to save money – OR splash out on one of the epic resorts. Mid-range accommodation doesn’t seem to be worthwhile on Tioman.

The Tioman Santai Bistro Resort

The BEST value for money – Tioman Santai Bistro Resort. This small hotel is located right on the seafront in Juara and offers sea view rooms. Be aware that the rooms are pretty basic but reasonably clean and nice. The Santai Bistro Resort also has an outdoor swimming pool and a cafe (opening hours variable). The Tioman Santai Bistro Resort is not only GREAT value for money. It is also an excellent location for MANY of the things to do in Tioman.

The Japamala Resort

We already mentioned the Japamala resort for THE BEST luxurious stay. The Japamala Resort really is VERY beautiful and offers a range of comfortable luxury accommodation – perfect for splashing out in Tioman. They also have a villa with a private swimming pool. The only disadvantage of the Japamala Resort is that it is out of the way for many of the things to do in Tioman. So if you are planning to explore Tioman – you will need to factor in the time and cost of taking boats around the island.
