1 Visit the Petronas Towers
The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur is one of the most iconic landmarks in Malaysia. It is also a great hub for shopping, entertainment and food. The impressive twin towers dominates the skyline of Central KL. You can either take a tour of the Petronas Towers or you can explore the area around the bottom of the towers. At the bottom of the Petronas Towers there is a large shopping mall called the KLCC Suriya Mall. This mall has plenty of shops, restaurants, coffee shops and a food court. There is also a kids Science Discovery Museum on the top floor. Alternatively there is an aquarium located at the KLCC convention center. At the base of the Petronas Towers there is a large park with a kids playground, splash park (FREE of charge) and loads of spots for a great photo of the twin towers.

2 See Orangutans in Sabah
If you are looking for amazing memorable things to do in Malaysia make sure you visit the orangutan sanctuary. The best place to see orangutans in Malaysia is at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary located in Sandakan in the state of Sabah. This lovely little sanctuary cares for rescued Orangutans providing a safe fence-free habitat for the orangutans to thrive. They have two feeding times per day 10am and 3pm. We recommend arriving around 1 hour before feeding.
You do need to visit at one of the feeding times to see the orangutans. After food they tend to disappear into the jungle to take a nap. The best chance of seeing orangutans close up on the wooden walkway is to arrive around an hour before the afternoon feeding session. They can sometimes be seen waiting around on the wooden walkways. There is something truly breathtaking and exhilarating about seeing these magnificent primates close up. TOP TIP: At Sepilok you are not allowed to take bags into the sanctuary. There are free lockers to leave bags. You can take a phone or small camera with you.

Penang Laksa (also known as Assam Laksa) is a fish noodle soup packed with an explosion of intense flavors. Laksa is one of the most unique dishes in the world. The stock has a sour, sweet and salty taste with a significant chili burn. Laksa is also garnished with mint, red onion and torch ginger adding an array of unique flavors. You can find Assam Laksa all around Malaysia. The best places to try an authentic laksa in Penang are Penang Road in Georgetown, Air Itam, Balik Pulau and Hawkers such as New World Park. 5 Go island hopping in Semporna

The Batu Cave is a very impressive cave located to the north of Kuala Lumpur. This impressive cave is located in jungle covered cliffs. There is a steep set of colorful steps leading up to the main chamber. Macaque monkeys can often be seen playing around the steps. The Batu Cave also has a Hindu temple inside. A short walk up to the chamber at the back and there is another temple and you can look up and see the sky through an opening. The Batu Cave is very impressive and unique for a city attraction. This place looks like the set of an adventure movie. What’s more, you only need a few hours to visit the Batu Cave from the centre of KL, so this is a great activity even if you only have a limited time in KL.

8 Have high tea in the Cameron Highlands
High tea may not sound like it belongs on a list of things to do in Malaysia. Believe it or not, this is actually a classic. The Cameron Highlands is a high altitude region with towns, forests and tea plantations. The cool wet climate in this region makes this location perfect for growing tea. The oldest and most famous tea plantation in the area is the Boh tea plantation.
At the Boh tea centre they also have a tea museum and a cafe serving a range of drinks and tempting food. Amongst the tempting choices, you can get scones with cream and jam and a perfect cup of Boh tea – a nod to the colonial history of this area. The tea centre cafe enjoys a very scenic location – take in the gorgeous views of the plantation whilst you enjoy your high tea. Watch out. The Cameron Highlands is a popular spot for domestic tourism in Malaysia. We recommend avoiding Malaysian holidays if possible. If you want to take high tea at the Boh tea centre we recommend arriving nice and early if possible. It can get very busy here.

9 Explore the oldest rainforest in the world – Taman Negara
If you’re looking for intrepid things to do in Malaysia consider a trek in Taman Negara – one of the oldest tropical rainforests in the world. Taman Negara is a giant national park rainforest located in the centre of Peninsular Malaysia. This deep rich jungle is home to an impressive and terrifying community of creatures including bears, tigers and plenty of snakes. Hopefully we haven’t put you off as Taman Negara is also very beautiful. If you are planning to trek in Taman Negara you will need to organise a guide – this jungle is vast and very hard to navigate and explore. At Taman Negara there is a canopy walkway. This is a wonderful place to experience the ambiance of an ancient rainforest and observe the rich array of flora and fauna.

10 Explore the mossy forest
If you love nature you’ll love the mossy forest in the Cameron Highlands. The high altitude rainforest of the Cameron Highlands provides a unique and stunning microclimate for a range of tropical flora and fauna. The cool damp climate causes slow tree growth and leads to a carpet of moss covering the branches and forest floor. The locals refer to this beautiful and unique forest as the Avatar Forest.
If you want to visit the mossy forest you will need to arrange a jeep to take you up the hill (private cars and taxis are not allowed). When you are there you also need to purchase an entrance ticket. After this you can follow some wooden walkways to explore this beautiful ecosystem. In the mossy forest you can see a wide range of plants and trees. Watch out for Monkey Cups hanging from the trees. There are also several viewpoints where you can see over the jungle hills.

11 See a rafflesia flower
Seeing a real rafflesia flower is one of our TOP PICK things to do in Malaysia. This celebrated flower is extremely rare, unique and utterly bizarre. Rafflesia are the largest flowers in the world. A mature Rafflesia flower is often between 60cm and 80cm in diameter. Rafflesia flowers can only be found in a few locations around southeast Asia. They require very specific conditions to survive.
The buds take around 9 months to mature and only bloom for around 5 days before they die and turn into a rotten black mess. Rafflesia flowers don’t have any leaves, stems or roots. What’s more, this bizarre flower is also parasitic and releases a strong odor of rotten meat. This attracts carrion flies which the Rafflesia flower uses for cross-pollination. You can see Rafflesia flowers around the town of Lojing in the Cameron Highlands. Tours to see Rafflesia flowers in the Cameron Highlands cost around RM150 (roughly £30) and take several hours.

12 Bathe in geothermal hot springs
If you’re looking for relaxing things to do in Malaysia, consider taking a dip in a geothermal hot spring. There are some hot springs located in Poring very close to the Rafflesia Gardens and Canopy walkway. The Poring Hot Springs have lots of baths and pools to soak in. This is the perfect spot for a rejuvenating and relaxing mineral bath. They even have a small geothermal swimming pool. At the Poring Hot Spring there are also showers and a toilet.

13 Stroll through the jungle canopy

Canopy walkways enable you to see wildlife rarely visible from the ground. It is worth being aware that canopy walkways are not for the faint hearted. If you’re afraid of heights this one is not for you. There is an exhilarating canopy walkway right next to the Poring Hot Springs. There is also a canopy walkway located at Taman Negara.

14 Snorkel in the Perhentians
No list of things to do in Malaysia would be complete without a snorkeling trip. And one of the best places to go snorkeling in Malaysia is the beautiful Perhentian islands. If you go diving or snorkeling around the Perhentian islands you can experience crystal clear waters, colorful coral and impressive biodiversity. It is common to see turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, parrot fish, clown fish, barracuda and much much more. If you take a snorkelling trip at the Perhentian islands they will often include a boat trip with 4 – 5 snorkelling sites and rental of snorkelling equipment. If you’re a wildlife lover make sure you don’t miss the Kinabatangan river in Sabah. Along the banks of the Kinabatangan river it is common to see a delightful variety of creatures. Proboscis monkeys can often be seen playing in the trees along the river banks. These monkeys are well known for their distinctive large noses. Wild orangutan sightings are also possible in this area. Watch out for wild crocodiles dozing on the banks of the Kinabatangan River. One of the most amazing things to do in Malaysia is diving in Sipadan. Sipadan is a small island off the east coast of Sabah not too far from Mabul island. First things first. You need to get yourself to Semporna. You can either take a bus from Kota Kinabalu to Semporna (this is a very long journey!). Alternatively fly from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau and then take a short bus ride to Semporna (around 1 hour). From Semporna you need to take a boat to Mabul island. From Mabul you can organize diving trips to Sipadan island.

18 Explore the Habitat Penang Hill
One of the best ways to connect with nature in Malaysia is to visit the Habitat Biosphere project located on the top of Penang Hill. The Habitat reserve is an area of protected ancient rainforest with remarkable biodiversity and a range of endangered endemic species. This innovative eco project has been established to celebrate, conserve and preserve this unique and rich ecosystem. The Habitat has a number of canopy walkways, trails, herb gardens and viewing terraces.
The main attractions are the Langur walkway – this is an impressive canopy walkway through a forest that is home to many Langur Monkeys – also known as dusky leaf monkeys. The most impressive structure is the Curtis Crest walkway. This is located at the peak of Penang hill. This is a round walkway that affords a breathtaking 360 panorama of Penang island and the central hills. Visiting the Habitat was genuinely one of the main highlights of our most recent trip to Penang. A visit to ESCAPE Penang is one of the best things to do in Malaysia for adventurous thrill seekers. ESCAPE is an outdoor adventure park located in Penang. A single ticket gives you access to the whole site. They have a water park with slides, jump boards, kids water play zones, an inflatable obstacle course and a deep dive pool. They also have the longest tube water slide in the world. ESCAPE also has an adventure park section with high ropes, swings, a trapeze, trampoline, climbing wall, tubby race slide and the world’s longest zip coaster. A day at ESCAPE really is a day of exhilaration immersed in the beautiful rainforest hills of Penang. There is also an ESCAPE Adventure Park located in Kuala Lumpur.

20 Visit the Penang turtle sanctuary
The Penang turtle sanctuary is located on turtle beach in the Penang National Park. Getting to the turtle sanctuary is a fun adventure in itself. You will either need to take a boat from the National Park entrance or trek for around 60 – 90 minutes through the jungle. This lovely little sanctuary protects turtles by keeping their eggs safe until they hatch. The cute baby turtles are then placed in a safe pool to mature a little before they are released into the wild. If there are baby turtles – you will be able to see them. This is also a great place to learn about the fascinating life cycle and behavior of turtles.
How do you get to the Penang turtle sanctuary?
Getting to the Penang turtle sanctuary is a lot of fun. You can either trek through the Penang national park. This jungle trail is well marked. Alternatively you can take a boat from the National Park entrance. Negotiate a price depending on group size and how long you want to stay. 22 Swim with sharks in Langkawi
This may not sound like one of the most enticing things to do in Malaysia. But believe it or not – you can swim with sharks in Langkawi. Check out the Perdana Marine park. They have several large artificial salt water pools with a range of fish, coral and other sea life. They also have a sharks pool with black tip reef sharks. The Perdana Marine park aims to reduce tourism pressure on the small areas of remaining natural reef near Langkawi. At the Perdana Marine park there is also an aquarium and kids play pool. You can rent sea scooters (there are lots of fun!) and you can even have a go at scuba diving in the deep pool. This really is lots of fun. The Perdana Marine Park has several cafes on site. They also have changing rooms and lockers.
Looking for a trip to a natural reef?
Consider a trip to the Pulau Payar Marine park. This is likely to cost around RM450 per adult. Unfortunately you can only take small expensive boats to this area from langkawi.

23 Climb Kinabalu
One of the most challenging things to do in Malaysia is climb the epic mount Kinabalu. The summit of Kinabalu is at a dizzying 4095m. To climb Kinabalu you will need to get a permit and also pay for a tour package. Permits are limited to several hundred per day. To climb Kinabalu we recommend getting a 2 day, 1 night permit. You trek through the first day and then sleep at the Laban Rata Rest house (part way up the mountain). This is very basic dorm accommodation. You wake up very early and climb to the summit for sunrise. The weather at the summit is variable. Many mornings the summit is cold and windy.
How do you get to mount Kinabalu?
Either take a bus from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and request a Kinabalu stop (we recommend checking this when you buy your ticket). Alternatively rent a car and drive to Kinabalu. A taxi from Kota Kinabalu would be very expensive due to the distance.

26 Visit Legoland
If you’re looking for family friendly things to do check out Legoland Malaysia. This lego theme park is located in Johor Bahru (not too far from Singapore). We recommend a full day for a trip to Legoland. There is a lot to do here for kids of all ages. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush there are a couple of roller coasters and a long flume. Don’t miss the Legoland 4D cinema.
We also love some of the more innovative experiential rides – such as the interactive Ninja ride and the VR roller coaster. There are also areas where you can chill out and cool off from the heat whilst children explore and build lego models to add to a large collaborative sculpture. Legoland really does have something for everyone. Legoland also has an aquarium and a larger outdoor waterpark. Many people spend two days at Legoland and stay overnight. There is plenty of accommodation in the area.

The beautiful Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam Penang is one of the most impressive temples in Malaysia. This extensive hill temple has pagodas, shrines, statues and a moon gate. At the upper level of the Kek Lok Si temple complex is the large Guan Yin statue – a prominent landmark in the area. Kek Lok Si temple has plenty of artwork and the hillside location affords impressive views over the surrounding area. We recommend visiting early in the morning to avoid the heat and experience Kek Lok Si temple before the crowds.

One of the best ways to connect with the tribal heritage of East Malaysia is to visit the Mari Mari Cultural Village approximately 18km from Kota Kinabalu. The Mari Mari cultural Village displays traditional tribal clothing, tribal artwork and authentic jungle houses. You can experience unque performances with traditional music, games and dance. The Mari Mari cultural village offer sessions daily at 10am and 2pm. This is a great activity if you only have a short time in Sabah and don’t plan to travel too far from Kota Kinabalu.

30 Visit the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park
If you love islands, beaches and clear waters then we think you will love the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park near Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is a collection of islands surrounded by clear water and beautiful coral reef. These small islands have lovely clean soft sandy beaches, lush jungle and lovely calm waters. From Kota Kinabalu you can organize cheap and fun island hopping day trips around this marine park. You can choose how many islands you visit.
These trips include transport but you will need to pay extra to rent snorkeling gear (around RM10 per set). The island hopping trips do not include food – although you can buy some simple food on the islands. We recommend bringing your own food for the day. Island hopping trips in Kota Kinabalu are fun and visit some genuinely beautiful islands. This is not the best place for snorkeling in Malaysia. If it fits in your itinerary we recommend Semporna and Mabul, Tioman, Pulau Redang and the Perhentians for excellent snorkeling in Malaysia.
