What things can you see at the Tropical Fruit Farm?

A visit to the Tropical Fruit Farm Penang is a multi-sensory experience. Taste delicious and bizarre fruits and learn about the unique tropical ecosystem.  The Tropical Fruit Farm tour takes around 1 hour.

Here is a sample to wet your appetite…

See Avocados growing on trees and learn about this unique protein rich fruit which contains more potassium than a banana. Don’t miss the oranges and lemons growing nearby.

Taste the bizarre miracle fruit (one of the rarest fruits in the world). A small sample of this unassuming little fruit changes your taste buds – anything you eat after this fruit will taste sweet – sometimes up to an hour or two later. A sour lemon starts to taste like a sweet orange.

Oh yeah, we love the little hobbit home too. A perfectly quaint and quirky addition to this magical place.

At the Tropical Fruit Farm Penang you can also experience the familiar. There is something deeply interesting about seeing familiar fruits growing on the trees rather than stacked on supermarket shelves.

At the Tropical Fruit Farm you can see oranges, lemons, bananas, pineapples and papaya growing in their natural environment. There is a lot more to these fruits than you think.

If you get a chance, sample the creepy blood fruit. This small berry is full of red juice that looks concerningly like blood. You have to see it to believe it! Start to look like dracula as the juices dribble down your chin!

Sample delicious, succulent and juicy rambutans straight from the tree. Oh yeah and don’t miss the Langsat tree. They are similar to Rambutan or Lychee – and the best Langsat are super fresh – straight from the tree. Their taste is a balance of sweet, sour and citrus.

A personal favourite of mine was the Santol fruit. Inside there is a white flesh with a soft and slightly grainy texture. It also has a very unique sweet and sour taste. This fruit is not sold in markets due to the large diameter of the tree meaning that it is not economically viable to grow for sale. This is just another thing we LOVE about the Tropical Fruit Farm. It is the only way to experience the truly unique.

Talking of unique, did you know that there is actually a fruit called the custard apple?! This unusual fruit has a white creamy flesh that really does seem to taste like apple and custard.

Oh yeah, it’s not all fruit. At the Tropical Fruit Farm you also see nuts, fragrant leaves, cocoa pods and coffee beans growing here too. Did you know that the coffee flower is a beautiful white flower that smells like Jasmine?

If you visit the Tropical Fruit Farm Penang between June and August you can see Durian growing on trees. This impressive beast has been crowned “king of the fruits”. Malaysians love this incredible fruit – and Penang is reputed to have the best durian in the world. Durian has an intimidating spiky green shell on the outside. Inside it is filled with rich, creamy, pungent flesh. Durian is genuinely like nothing else you will ever try. Depending on the crop they sell durian in the fruit shop at the main entrance.

The exact fruits available depend on the season and current crop. The guides will always have something interesting for you to look at, smell and taste. Oh yeah, and the Tropical Fruit Farm have a commitment to organic and sustainable farming.

Is the Tropical Fruit Farm suitable for families?

The Tropical Fruit Farm Penang is a GREAT activity for families with kids. This is the perfect place for children to connect with nature and learn about the wonderful array of tropical fruits around.

There is a small ride in a truck up the hill (lots of fun for little ones). They are able to take a pram inside the truck if required. The whole route is family friendly and pram friendly. There are a few things to watch out for if you are visiting with kids:

  • The location is quite exposed and hot so remember sun protection and plenty of water
  • Bring mosquito repellant
  • There are ants in the area
  • At one point there is a fish pond – supervise little ones carefully

What do they sell at the Tropical Fruit Farm shop and cafe?

Don’t forget to spend some time in the shop and cafe at the end of the tour. They have lots of great things to try and buy at the Tropical Fruit Farm shop. We also love the seating area with an amazing view.

  • Fruit platter & juice (included with the more expensive tour option)
  • Enzyme tasting (included with every tour)
  • Buy fruits to take home
  • The coffee shop (includes coffee grown on site)
