Where is the Tropical Spice Garden located?
The Tropical Spice Garden Penang is beautifully situated by the ocean on the north coast of Penang between Batu Ferringhi and Teluk Bahang. This is a beautiful spot to appreciate the ocean and there is also a lovely beach located just opposite to the Tropical Spice Garden.
How do you get to the Tropical Spice Garden?

The Tropical Spice Garden Penang is on the 101 bus route and it is also easy to access by car or taxi. Parking is available across the road from the main entrance to the tropical Spice Garden.

Georgetown – Tanjung Bungah – Batu Ferringhi – TROPICAL SPICE GARDEN – Teluk Bahang

What can you see at the Tropical Spice Gardens?

The Tropical Spice Garden extends over 7 acres of coastal rainforest with little streams, ponds, water features, and small winding pathways. This place really is magical. The hillside slope creates a grand majestic feel to this tropical garden.

There are over 500 species of plants, shrubs and trees at the Tropical Spice Garden Penang. Many of the species have signs with interesting information about the uses, properties and characteristics. The tropical Spice Garden is also home to over 100 herbs and spices. This really is a great place to experience, learn and connect.

Many tropical spices are derived from medicinal plants and were originally used in food for their medicinal properties. Some of the plants at the Tropical Spice Garden have powerful medicinal properties and are used in modern medicine. Such as the Asteraceae (or “Leaf of God”) which has anti-cancer properties, stopping tumors from spreading and is now found in lung cancer treatments.

Or what about the Star of Bethlehem. In small doses this plant has medicinal properties. The sap however can cause severe skin irritation and in large doses it is toxic.
Did you know that turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties? It is thought to promote heart health and prevent diseases such as Alzheimers and cancer? Did you know that Cinnamon is produced from the dried ground bark of a tree? There really is so much to learn here.

Another fascinating part of the Tropical Spice Garden is a small section called the poison garden. This is a small pathway in the upper part of the tropical Spice Garden leading through various toxic plants and shrubs. These innocuous looking plants harbor all sorts of terrifying toxic properties.


“Can cause blindness” or “Can cause sleepiness, convulsions and death” are just some of the properties listed in this section. This unusual looking species is called the finger tree, or milk bush. The sap is used to poison arrowheads. A visit to the poison garden really is a great way to instill a humble respect for the wild.

At the tropical Spice Garden Penang you may also be able to see amazing wildlife. It is common to see monkeys in the treetops. Watch out for macaque monkeys and Dusky leaf monkeys. It is also very common to see small lizards scuttling around rocks and bushes in the tropical Spice Garden. In the pond at the Tropical Spice Garden you can also see insects, fish, frogs, birds and even a freshwater turtle.

Don’t miss the fish spa situated close to the Community Gardens (the kids area with a sand pit). They have small fish that nibble the dead skin off your feet!

In the past there was a beautiful Thai restaurant located at the tropical Spice Garden Penang. This restaurant was called tree monkey. Sadly the Tree Monkey is now permanently closed.
