The beaches around Koh Phangan each have something unique to offer.
- Beaches along the north and west coast tend to have calmer clearer waters
- Beaches along the south west coast can be more murky (Thong Sala and Ban Tai)
- Beaches along the east coast can have bigger waves and can be more windy
- Some of the beaches along the east coast are very remote and hard to access
Most of the beaches in Koh Phangan don’t have a very big distance between the beachfront and the tide line. During high tides some of the beaches can disappear altogether. There are a couple of sand bars along the west coast. It is possible to see jellyfish in the waters around Koh Phangan any time of the year – although the rainy season is the worst.
Also the time of year makes ALL the difference. If you’re after calm, crystal clear waters we recommend visiting in the dry season; January – June are the hot dry months. The dry season peaks around March – April in Koh Phangan. This is also the best time of year to go snorkeling and diving.

The best beach in Koh Phangan ALL depends on exactly what you’re looking for. Whether you want to sunbathe, snorkel, swim, see an amazing sunset, trek to an epic view point. Koh Phangan has it all – you just need to know where to go.
Best beach in Koh Phangan for golden sands – Bottle Beach and Haad Salad
There are some lovely soft golden sand beaches around Koh Phangan. The one of the best beaches in Koh Phangan for golden sand is Bottle Beach. Bottle beach is more remote, so another beach with amazing golden sands is Haad Salad.
However, it is worth being aware that the quality of the sand can vary with the seasons, the weather and ocean rubbish (sadly that is a problem in Koh Phangan like most of the world). The nicest time to enjoy the beaches in Koh Phangan is dry season (January – June). Most of the beaches have nice places to sit and enjoy the ambiance with a drink. Chaloklum has many nice restaurants and cafes along the beach front.
In our experience Koh Phangan had much nicer beaches than many other popular beach destinations around Thailand.
Best beach in Koh Phangan for sunsets – Ao Hin Kong and Mae Haad bay
Ao Hin Kong and Mae Haad are great spots to enjoy the amazing asian sunsets. On a clear day it is possible to see the sun setting over the ocean. As you look out to see in the west direction, in the distance you can see the Ang Thong Marine Park (a set of beautiful islands). Ao Hin Kong has an epic sandbar which you can walk along at low tide.
Drop in to Shell Lounge; they serve delicious food and drinks. You can also rent kayaks and paddle boards from Koh Ma Beach Resort (200 baht for one hour). At low tide you can also walk along a sand bar to Koh Ma island.
The Asian sunsets happen around 6-7pm depending on the time of year.
The most colorful part of the sunset happens around 15 minutes after the sun has dropped below the horizon. Haad Salad and Haad Yao are also fantastic sunset beaches in Koh Phangan.
Best beach in Koh Phangan for epic sunrises – Thong Nai Pan Beach
The best beach in Koh Phangan for epic sunrises is Thong Nai Pan Beach on the north east coast. You can also catch a beautiful sunrise at Haad Rin beach (the full moon party beach). The sun rises in Thailand around 6am so you need to be up early to catch the best colours. Koh Phangan is very beautiful at this time of the morning.

The full moon party at Koh Phangan is one of the best beach parties in the world. Notorious for neon body paint, drink buckets, amazing sound systems and fire performers, thousands of travelers flock to Koh Phanagan just to experience a full moon party. Haad Rin beach is the most iconic and famous spot for full moon parties in Koh Phangan.
There is an entrance fee to the party of 100 baht (around £2 or $2.50) and you do not need to buy tickets in advance.There are also occasionally parties at Baan Tai beach and Lost Paradise Beach (Haad Yao East). It is worth noting that the full moon party doesn’t necessarily happen on the night of the actual full moon.

Best beach in Koh Phangan for snorkelling – Haad Khom
The best beach in Koh Phangan for snorkeling is Haad Khom beach. The water is generally very clear and calm here and the bay is normally sheltered from wind and waves. Along the sea bed there are sections of rock and coral.
If you explore around the edges of Haad Khom bay you will find lots of rock and coral. Haad Khom is best for snorkeling in high tides.

Best beach in Koh Phangan for trekking – Bottle Beach
If you are up for a good trek then we recommend Bottle Beach (also known as Haad Khuad หาดขวด เกาะพะงัน). Bottle beach is a relatively quiet and secluded beach on the north coast of Koh Phangan. You can trek to bottle beach from the small car park at the end of the coast road (past Haad Khom beach). The trek takes 1-2 hours.

It is only a few kilometers but you need to follow a hilly jungle path. If you want to get to bottle beach and you’re not up for a trek you can also take a small taxi boat from the east side of Haad Khom. They arrive approximately every hour and do not follow a strict schedule. It costs 150 baht. Here is the phone number for one of the boat drivers (062 415 4328 / 093 6284725).
Once you are at Bottle Beach you can also trek up to the amazing Bottle Beach view point. The trek to the viewpoint starts near Bottle Beach 2 (restaurant). Follow the road inland for a few hundred meters and then turn left. Look out for signs to the view point. Be aware that the viewpoint itself has some big drops from the rocks – take care in this area.
Best secret beach in Koh Phangan – Small beach near Haad Khom
Haad Khom itself is a hidden gem in Koh Phangan. However if you’re really looking for a small secluded secret beach, there is a very small beach located a few hundred metres just to the north east of Haad Khom. This little hidden gem is so small it doesn’t actually have a name (at least we couldn’t find one). If you go there – you probably have the right to give it your own name.
What is the worst beach in Koh Phangan
We normally like to be super positive. But we also like to be real. Which beach do we recommend that you avoid in Koh Phangan. Remember most of the beaches are stunning. However we found that some sections along the south coast of Baan Tai can be quite dirty. You often run into territorial dogs in the area too who like to mark their spot with the occasional poop. You can often find a lot of trash washing up here including broken glass. The water is also likely to be more murky and we often saw jelly fish in this area. Having said this there are some very nice sections of Baan Tai – especially if there are resorts where the owners look after the beach.
How do you stay safe on Koh Phangan beaches?
There are some risks to be aware of on Koh Phangan beaches. Certain beaches at certain times of the year can have large waves and strong currents. If the water is rough or you see red flags do not swim. During the dry season (January – June) many of the waters are calm especially around the north and west coast. You also need to be aware of jellyfish in the area. There are some pretty nasty beasts in the water from time to time (Box jellyfish and Portuguese Man of war).
Jellyfish are more common in the rainy season (July – December) especially after rain. They are also more common in the morning and evening. Take special care in murky water if you can see what’s around you. Remember barbs and tentacles can be a risk too. If you see jellyfish get out of the water as quickly and safely as possible. We also recommend traveling with vinegar. Jellyfish stings should be washed with vinegar. In some places there may be jelly fish nets to protect swimmers. Local resorts and hotels on the beachfront can normally give you accurate information about recent jellyfish sightings.
We don’t mean to scare you off. Remember that many people enjoy the beaches and water around Koh Phangan without any problems.
