TOP TIPS for traveling Vietnam with kids
You may be interested in our FULL GUIDE to the best Vietnam travel tips. Here are some top tips to help you prepare for your trip to Vietnam with kids.
Vietnamese culture and language

Firstly, Vietnam is a very friendly and welcoming culture towards families. In most places that you are likely to visit people speak reasonably good English. Furthermore, you commonly see English signs around. We do recommend using Google Translate and it is possible to download an entire language so that you can translate offline on your phone. It is also worth being aware that bartering is acceptable in Vietnam. You can barter on market, barter for taxis, barter for accommodation and also barter for tours.
Vietnamese climate

Vietnam has a tropical climate and it can get very hot during the day. It is important to keep drinking plenty of water. We recommend traveling with a refillable water bottle. We also recommend that you bring a high factor sun cream (SPF50) and mosquito repellent.
Vietnamese cites

The cities in Vietnam are very busy and the roads are extremely crowded with motorbikes. In some places, for example the Hanoi old quarter, you may find that the footpaths are small, crowded or non-existent. Therefore you may need to walk along the road. Supervise kids carefully on the roads in Vietnam. Always take care of your bags and belongings when you are walking through crowded areas.
Currency

The Vietnamese currency can be quite confusing. The smallest notes are in very large denominations making it very difficult to work out conversions, exchange rate and how much change to expect. Always check your change carefully. To add to the confusion sometimes locals will quote prices in dollars. When they do this they are using US dollars, so it is handy to know the current exchange rate. There are many ATMs in bigger cities in Vietnam. We found that Agribank gave us the best deal with a small withdrawal fee for foreign cards.
Food

Vietnam is a very good country to travel for cheap, tasty and family-friendly street food. Many common Vietnamese dishes are not over spiced and they are actually quite kid friendly. for example one of the most common Street foods that you will find in Vietnam is a French style baguette called Bahn Mi. Just generally contains fillings like meat, egg and pickled vegetables. you can also find noodle soups (Pho) all over the place and these are very tasty and not too spicy. Vietnamese street food tends to be very affordable, normally ranging between 30,000 – 50,000VND.
What is the best way to get around in Vietnam with kids?

The easiest and most convenient way to get around in Vietnam for short local journeys is to use taxis. The best way to get a taxi in Vietnam is to use one of the taxi apps. The two common taxi apps in Vietnam are Grab and Gojek. To use a taxi app in Vietnam we recommend buying a local SIM card with data. download the app from your store and then register your account using your local phone number and email address. Once your account is set up you can order taxes using your phone’s location, and you’ll be told the price of the journey before you book the taxi. You can also select pay and cash making it super convenient to get your taxi.
Long-distance buses in Vietnam are cheap, comfortable and actually genuinely quite enjoyable. A long-distance first journey is a great way to get around with kids. Long distance buses tend to have quite good facilities such as toilets and they may even have reclining or lie down beds inside the bus. This is quite a novel experience and is a fun way to travel with kids.
For longer journeys around Vietnam there is a very good train system. Taking a sleeper train is a fun and enjoyable experience, and we have recommended this as one of our things to do in Vietnam with kids. However, if your itinerary does not allow time to take a train there are also cheap internal domestic flights available between cities in Vietnam. Expect to pay around £30 – £100 For domestic flights in Vietnam. Remember you will also need to consider baggage fees and booking fees on top of this.
How long should you spend in Vietnam?

When we started traveling with our kids we found it very important to slow down. Traveling slower with kids allows you time to connect to places, immerse yourself in culture, embrace more experiences and not burnout as a family.
If you only have a short amount of time to visit Vietnam, we recommend focusing on either the north or the South. It is a long journey between the North and the South (30 hours overland) and it will not be worth traveling the length of the country if you are staying for a week or less.
If you wish to explore both the north and south of Vietnam, we recommend staying in Vietnam for at least 10 days or more. Ideally, if you can afford the time we recommend spending around 2 weeks or more in Vietnam to really immerse yourself in the culture, experience the variety and range of activities available and explore both the beautiful north and south of the country.
Don’t miss our EPIC 10 day Vietnam itinerary. We show you how to hit all of the BEST attractions in Vietnam in only 10 days.
Is it better to book tours in Vietnam locally or book online in advance?

The best way to book your tours in Vietnam depends on your personal preferences. For example, if you like to have all your ducks in a row in advance and you prefer the reassurance and security of booking online, then we recommend using Klook. This platform offers some surprisingly good deals. We have found the prices on Klook are often very similar to local prices, and in some cases if you snatch up a good deal you can actually save money by booking online in advance.
However, you can also book tours locally in Vietnam. Most big cities and tourist hubs have little tour offices. Local tour companies will be very happy to answer your questions, book tours and tickets for you and you can also negotiate the best possible deal by bartering.
1 Take a Mekong river boat tour

One of the best things to do in Vietnam with kids is taking a Mekong river boat tour. A boat tour of the Mekong river allows you to get a unique insight into rural river culture in Vietnam. You can see small sea fishing villages, local markets, wooden stilt houses and palm mangroves. The cruise also stops at a small island on the Mekong. It is possible to explore the Island by bicycle or just chill out on the hammocks. They will also include performances such as local music and dance performances and you will be offered snacks and local food and drinks. Most tours also include a lunch, always check this when you are booking.
A Mekong river tour is likely to take a full day. In order to take a Mekong river tour you will need to be based in Ho Chi Minh City. From here you can arrange tours which will include pick up and drop off from your hotel and all of the activities and food as well.
If you book your Mekong river tour on Klook in advance expect to pay around $20. If you book your Mekong river tour in Ho Chi Minh with a local tour operator, expect to pay in the range of $10 to $20 if you are willing to barter.
2 See a traditional water puppet show

If you’re looking for cultural things to do in Vietnam with kids why not visit a traditional water puppet show? Traditional Vietnamese water puppets shows are a fun and curious experience. small puppets perform scenes over a pool of water with traditional Vietnamese music and colourful backgrounds. Most Vietnamese water puppet shows take around 1 hour. This could be a very good activity for a younger child who may be enchanted by the music, lights and colours. However, some younger children may become disengaged with the show after a little while. The experience is more likely to engage young children if you are able to pay for a ticket closer to the front. It is very hard to work out exactly what is going on in the water puppet shows, and this is part of the fun! You can see a water puppet show in Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi.
In Hanoi: There are daily water puppet shows at 5.20pm and 6.30pm at the Thang Long water puppet theater. Prices range between £3 – £7 (100,000 – 200,000VND) depending on your choice of seat. Book your tickets on Klook or from the ticket office when you arrive.

One of the most memorable things to do in Vietnam with kids is take a luxury cruise of the iconic Ha Long Bay. A luxury cruise normally includes a comfortable and luxurious cabin, all meals (the food is amazing!) and an engaging program of exciting activities and experiences. Most luxury cruises include a bamboo raft tour of the sea caves, kayaking, swimming and other activities on the boat. Many of the luxury cruise ships have top deck swimming pools or jacuzzis and on board bars. They also do entertainment, music and may include experiences like Tai Chi lessons or squid fishing. A great way to connect with the culture and cuisine of Vietnam is to take a cooking course. Many Vietnamese cooking courses are engaging, interactive and fun. They will normally include experiences like a visit to the local market and opportunities to learn about local ingredients and spices. Cooking courses in Vietnam also include hands-on experience preparing delicious recipes from Fresh local ingredients under the supervision of a local expert. Best of all, if you take a Vietnamese cooking course you will also be able to try the dishes that you make. Many cooking courses also include a recipe book and free hotel transfer. Book a Hanoi cooking class on Klook for a great price.
7 Take a rickshaw tour of Hanoi

If you are looking for fun and unique things to do in Vietnam with kids we highly recommend taking a rickshaw tour of the Hanoi old quarter. A short walk around the old Quarter and you will very quickly see rickshaw drivers waiting to take people on tours of the main sights and attractions in the old quarter. Just agree to a price and hop on. A rickshaw tour of the old quarter should include many of the main attractions in the area such as Hoan Kiem lake, Jade island, Train Street, the Temple of literature, One Pillar Pagoda and the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum. 8 Visit the Cu Chi tunnels in Ho Chi Minh

The Cu Chi tunnels are an impressive maze of small underground tunnels that were constructed by the Vietnamese soldiers in the war. Some of these tunnels are impressively small, to detract the American soldiers from entering. It is genuinely mind blowing to learn about the terrifying history of this place.
If you take a tour of the Cu Chi tunnels you can learn the stories of local heroes and battles. We recommend this afternoon experience for older children. Some of the details are potentially disturbing and not really suitable for younger children. This is also a great opportunity to integrate some worldschooling into your travels. For example, you could learn more about the geopolitical history of the US-Vietnam conflict.
Tours of the Cu Chi tunnels normally run from around 7am – 3pm. Tours normally cost around $20 if you book in advance online. We recommend booking your tour of the Cu Chi tunnels on Klook. Find out the exact timings when you book. Tours normally include a two-way transfer from Ho Chi Minh and an English speaking tour guide.
9 Take a paddle boat on Trúc Bạch Lake

If you are exploring Hanoi with kids, you may be interested to know that you can rent a paddle boat on Truc Bach lake. 11 Play at Kidzoona

If you’re looking for things to do in Vietnam with kids and you have active little ones, consider a play session at Kidzoona. This is an innovative indoor place with a wide range of activities to engage young children. Very impressed with the creative range of activities available for kids to play with. They have active play sections with ball pits, bouncy areas, climbing frames, slides and much more. They also have sections for creative play, imaginative play and problem-solving. Kidzoona do not offer any day care services – so a parent does need to stay to supervise their kids. However, due to the engaging nature of this venue supervision requirements are very low. One of the best things to do in Vietnam with kids is go snorkeling in beautiful clear waters. Vietnam has a reputation for stunning and beautiful tropical coastline. The waters around Vietnam are teeming with tropical life and coral reefs. There are plenty of great snorkeling spots in Vietnam. One way to enjoy snorkeling is just to go to one of the many beautiful beaches, rent some snorkeling gear (dive shops or resorts can often lend kit) and head out swimming.
Another way to enjoy snorkeling in Vietnam is to actually take a snorkeling trip. This may be more expensive but local guides will know the best places to take you snorkeling. 13 Trekking in Sapa

If you’re looking for adventurous things to do in Vietnam with kids, why not go trekking in Sapa?
We absolutely loved trekking in Sapa with our two boys. Sapa is a small beautiful mountain town located in the north of Vietnam (almost on the Chinese border). There are many beautiful areas around Sapa which are perfect for trekking. In the hills around Sapa you can explore dramatic valleys, beautiful rural villages and lush green rice paddies. There are misty mountains, impressive waterfalls and breathtaking viewpoints. If you’re planning to go trekking in sapa with kids, we recommend planning your route carefully. Most people decide to take a guide.
One way to organise your track in Sapa is to pre-book and all-inclusive package online in advance (£100 – £150). Many trekking tours offer two-way transfer from Hanoi and include accommodation, food and a trekking guide. We recommend pre-booking your Sapa trek on Klook. You can also arrange tours by visiting a tour office in Hanoi and this may be a little cheaper than booking online (around £60). Alternatively, if you are feeling very adventurous, travel to Sapa independently and find a guide (£10 – £15 per day).
14 Visit a waterpark in Ho Chi Minh

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Vietnam with kids – don’t miss the Dam Sen waterpark in Ho Chi Minh. Splashing out at a waterpark is the perfect way to have a giggle and cool off from the tropical heat. We absolutely LOVE waterparks – and the best waterpark in Vietnam is the Dam Sen water park in Ho Chi Minh. Whether you are traveling with teenagers or toddlers – we think you will love the extensive and buzzing waterpark. There is a lazy river, tube slides, racer slides, wave pools and there is also a kids water play area. Pricing is based on height. Over 1m everyone pays 200,000VND (this is roughly £7 or $9). 15 Stay in an authentic Sapa homestay

If you are looking for unique and meaningful things to do in Vietnam with kids we recommend taking a Sapa homestay. We absolutely loved living in a homestay for a few weeks with our boys. Homestays offer a range of different accommodation options from very simple bamboo rooms surrounded by rice paddies to luxurious and stylish accommodation with impressive views and swimming pools. So you can really choose a homestay experience that meets your needs and aspirations as a family. There are many beautiful homestays around Sapa and the surrounding hills and valleys.
Homestays offer a unique opportunity to experience local life, meet locals and immerse yourself in the beautiful culture of north Vietnam. Most homestays normally offer a menu of delicious food so you can experience local cuisine and they normally include breakfast. Homestays can also help you arrange treks, book taxis and learn about local life and Culture. If you are visiting a Sapa homestay with kids we recommend that you bring plenty of warm clothes and consider kid friendly snacks. Homestays and Sapa don’t normally include kids menus and the facilities are generally quite basic. We recommend you plan your trip carefully. Furthermore, bring plenty of cash with you. Most homestays do not accept card payment and the nearest ATM is in Sapa town.
16 Visit epic waterfalls

Another great thing to do in Vietnam with kids is to visit some epic waterfalls. The best destination for waterfalls in Vietnam is the mountains of the North. There is something invigorating about seeing the beautiful waterfalls in Vietnam. Where there are waterfalls there is normally stunning scenery and plenty of awesome photography to be had. Love waterfall near Sapa is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Vietnam.
17 Ride a night train

If you’re looking for a fun and memorable experience in Vietnam we recommend riding the night train. Vietnam has a very good rail network offering affordable and convenient transportation around the country. The Vietnamese railway is also a great option for families with kids. The trains in Vietnam offer secure, lockable and comfortable cabins with either two or four beds. The beds are wide and comfortable enough to share with kids and this is a great way of traveling around the country and taking in the amazing scenery. When you are budgeting remember that taking a night train saves you the cost of one night accommodation elsewhere.
If you’re planning to travel between Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi you can do this by night train (be aware this journey takes around 30 hours). Alternatively if you’re planning to travel from Hanoi to Sapa you can also take a luxury Night Train (you actually take the train to Lao Cai and the journey takes around 8 hours). Expect to pay around £20 – £60 For a night train in Vietnam depending on the distance and cabin that you select. Also be aware that night trains may not have a food carriage on board and they may only offer very basic snacks. If you’re planning to take a night train with kids we recommend bringing plenty of snacks, drinks and food with you (parenting survival basics!).
TOP TIP: If you’re taking a night train with kids we recommend that you check the arrival time. Some night trains arrive very early in the morning, and this could be pretty rough if you’re traveling with young kids.
19 Visit a local market

One of the best ways to really connect with a culture is to visit one of the local markets. We absolutely love the markets in Vietnam. Vietnamese markets sell all sorts. You can normally find clothing, gifts, local craft, souvenirs, spices, fish, meat and vegetables. Most Vietnamese markets also have sections where you can buy local food and sit down to eat. This is a great way to experience some of the best affordable street food in Vietnam.
Most towns and cities in Vietnam have a local market. And many of the local markets in Vietnam are at their best early in the morning. Therefore, we recommend getting up nice and early to explore a local market and take in the lively atmosphere. If you are in Ho Chi Minh don’t miss the Ben Thanh market – the food court is amazing here. Also don’t miss the Dong Xuan market in Hanoi.
TOP TIP: It is very normal and acceptable to barter in a Vietnamese market. Bartering in Asia can actually be a lot of fun and a great way to connect with locals. Bartering is very important if you want to pay a reasonable local price.

20 Try some traditional Vietnamese desserts

Desserts are probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Vietnam. Not many people are aware of the Vietnamese dessert culture. Seriously, it’s a thing. If you don’t believe it just walk around the streets at night – especially somewhere like the Hanoi old quarter. You will see lots of little dessert shops with locals throwing jellies, coconut cream and ice into bowls. Locals sitting on tiny stools on the street sides enjoying desserts and laughing. Why not join them? This is a great thing to do in Vietnam with kids and it is bound to become one of your great family travel memories. Desserts in Vietnam typically cost around 30,000VND.
21 Visit a Vietnamese temple

Vietnam has a rich and varied diversity of religions. Some of the traditional Asian religions in Vietnam include Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Wherever you are visiting around Vietnam, you won’t be far from a beautiful temple to visit. Most temples in Vietnam are open to visitors. We strongly recommend that you dress respectfully. In general it is important to cover your shoulders and these if you are visiting a temple in Vietnam. This is a great way to integrate some worldschooling into your travels and teach your kids about religions around the world. consider activities that you could do in a Vietnamese temple such as drawing, sketching, speaking to locals and observing details such as artwork and statues. Some of our favourite temples in Hanoi include: Tran Quoc pagoda, the temple of literature and the One Pillar pagoda.
22 Stay in a luxury mountain resort

If you are looking for luxurious things to do in Vietnam consider staying in a luxury mountain resort. This is one of the best ways to unwind and disconnect from the world Rock You reconnect with nature. Luxury mountain resorts offer comfortable and impressive accommodation with breathtaking views. Many of the Mountain resorts in Vietnam have facilities such as impressive swimming pools, viewing terraces and on-site restaurants. They also offer excellent family friendly rooms and suites, for example you can often add an additional bed or cot to your room. Alternatively you can find family Suites that can often accommodate larger families (up to 4 or 5 people).

23 Visit an ethical elephant sanctuary

If your kids are interested in wildlife we highly recommend visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary in Vietnam. Actually, Vietnam does not have many elephant sanctuaries, let alone ethical elephant sanctuaries. However, there is an elephant sanctuary located in the Yok Don National Park. This beautiful national park is located in the south of Vietnam, approximately 300km north east of Ho Chi Minh. You can book a half day elephant tour that includes a guided trek, learning about local flora, foraging, and of course meeting these beautiful gentle giants. We only recommend this experience for families with older kids – 12 years and above. It costs $35 for a half day elephant tour. Find out more from the Yok Don National park official website
24 Learn H’mong dance, music and games

If you get the chance we highly recommend that you throw yourself into the impressive Vietnamese culture. For example if you’re traveling in the north of Vietnam make sure that you visit the beautiful Cat Cat village. In this Village you can watch vocal performances that include dance and games. It’s also pretty awesome that they encourage people to get involved in the musical games. This is a lot of fun for kids! Our kids absolutely loved the bamboo music game. Local performers move bamboo poles to the rhythm of music whilst you skip along avoiding being caught by the poles.
25 Buy some awesome local gifts

One of the things you can do in Vietnam with kids is buy some local gifts and souvenirs. Wherever you are staying in Vietnam you will find local market and small shops along the street selling gifts, craft and artwork. As ever we recommend bartering if you’re hoping for a reasonable local price. You can get all sorts of creative handmade products such as clothes, teddies and artwork. Be aware that products in Vietnam are not safe for babies – handmade crafts are liable to have bits dropping off (and this is a choking hazard for young kids).
Summary – what are the best things to do in Vietnam with kids?
We have shared plenty of amazing things to do in Vietnam with kids. This is not meant to be an overwhelming tick list. Instead we are hoping that this list of activities and ideas will inspire you and help you choose some awesome things to do with kids in Vietnam.
