What are the best things to do in Krabi with kids?

Before you read on, it is important to recognize that there are some activities in Krabi that we would not recommend for families with kids. Here is a list of the best tried and tested activities in and around Krabi for families with kids.

1 Krabi Island Hopping Trip

Backpacking Family Krabi Railay Thailand boat

If you are planning to spend some time in Krabi with your family, we highly recommend that you take an Island hopping trip of the Krabi bay. The most suitable Island hopping trip for families is the Four Island trip, which is relatively short, simple, and affordable. We do not recommend taking one of the longer Island hopping trips, especially if you are traveling with younger kids who can get tired and seasick. The Four Island trip takes around 8 hours. The boat journeys between the islands are relatively short, which is good if you are traveling with younger kids.

The Four Island trip allows you plenty of time to relax on the beach, and if your kids enjoy swimming and snorkeling, there are also some nice snorkeling spots on this trip. If you are doing a Krabi Island hopping trip with kids, be aware that the only food options are local Thai dishes, including curries and noodles. If your kids are not comfortable with Thai food, we recommend bringing along your own picnic. It is also important to recognize that some of the islands are quite exposed, so remember to bring high-factor sunscreen.

Most of the island hopping trips include fresh drinking water, although we do recommend bringing your own bottle along as well. If your kids are not confident swimmers, they may still enjoy playing on the beach. We do recommend supervising kids carefully if you’re doing an island hopping trip; there are lots of potential risks around, so close supervision is recommended throughout.

2 Take a Day Trip to the Railay Beach Area

Areal View of Railay bay

What is the Railay Beach area like?

If you have a few days in Krabi with your kids, we highly recommend that you take a day trip to the Railay Beach area. The Railay Beach area is a very beautiful remote beach area in Krabi. There are several beaches including Railay East & West Beach, Tonsai and the Phra Nang Cave Beach. It is free to visit the Railay Beach area, although you will need to pay for your boat tickets. We recommend starting with a visit to the beautiful and tranquil Tonsai Beach, which is the quietest beach in the area. If you are traveling with older kids, you could consider taking a climbing tour at Tonsai Beach. It is possible to walk from Tonsai Beach to Railay West Beach, where you can enjoy relaxing on the beach.

There are a couple of cafes and restaurants around, and you can also see monkeys on Railay Beach. From Railay West Beach, you can walk to Railay East Beach, where you can find a footpath leading to the beautiful Phra Nang Beach and Princess Cave. There is a beautiful area of a beach where you can relax under the shade of a rocky overhang and enjoy paddling in relatively shallow, beautiful water. This is a great spot for families to relax.

How do you get to the Railay Beach area?

The only way to reach the Railay Beach area is to take a taxi boat from Ao Nang. You can take shared taxi boats for 100 baht per person each way. It is not possible to pre-book your boat ticket, and you will need to purchase your return boat from Railay West Beach. Officially, kids who are 4 years and older need to pay the full price for a ticket. However, this rule is fairly relaxed and not strictly enforced. Find out more about getting to the Tonsai & Railay Beach area.

3 Visit an Amazing Sunrise Viewpoint

Best sunrise spot in Krabi Din Daeng Doi

If you’re looking for beautiful and memorable things to do in Krabi with kids, then we highly recommend checking out the beautiful Din Daeng Doi sunrise viewpoint, which is situated around 20 minutes outside of Krabi. The best way to get here is to have your own transport. The sunrise in Thailand is typically around 6 am, so you will need to get your family up pretty early if you do want to visit this stunning sunrise viewpoint.

There is a small car park, and you need to pay a small entrance fee. This costs 50 baht for adults (just over £1 or £1.20) and 20 baht for kids (£0.40 or $0.50). The walk is a pretty easy 10-minute walk uphill trail. When you reach the sunrise viewpoint, there are terraces and seats so you can sit down and enjoy the stunning sunrise. There is also a small cafe serving breakfast and hot drinks; the cafe is open earlier to buy breakfast and watch the sunrise.

4 Visit the Jungle Treehouse Cafe

toast and fruit platter jungle tree house cafe Krabi

If you are looking for unique experiences in Krabi with your kids, then check out the beautiful Jungle Treehouse Cafe (Baan Ton Mai), which is located around 15 minutes from the Ao Nang Beach Area. The Jungle Treehouse Cafe is genuinely very fascinating, unique, and impressive. This cafe serves a tempting selection of hot and cold drinks, cakes, and desserts. They also have an extensive menu, especially focusing on local dishes and seafood. There is a wide range of seating available around the cafe. Don’t miss the treehouse section where you can climb up steps and take in the jungle canopy from a treehouse.

There are canopy walkways and a garden to explore (watch out; you often see golden orb weaver spiders sitting in cobwebs between branches in the garden!). Also there is a jungle river where you can sit and enjoy drinks. We recommend bringing along some mosquito repellent and supervising younger kids carefully, especially if you are sitting by the river or exploring the canopy walkways; there are some big drops which could be risky if you are visiting with a young toddler. As you would expect, food and drinks in the Jungle Treehouse Cafe are slightly more expensive due to the novelty of this attraction. Most drinks cost 100 baht – 150 baht (£2 – £3). They are very nice, and we think it is worth the money.

4 Trek to the Top of Tiger Cave Temple

View of Ao Nang from top Tiger Cave Temple

If you’re looking for something adventurous and active to do with kids in Krabi, then check out the impressive Tiger Cave Temple situated north of Krabi town. Tiger Cave Temple is a stunning Thai temple with a remarkable viewpoint situated on top of one of the karst hills. This one is not for the faint-hearted, and we do not recommend this for families with younger kids.

However, if you have older active kids who enjoy a challenging trek, the trek to the top of the Tiger Cave Temple takes around 1 – 2 hours. It is consistently steep and very challenging; there are steps all the way up, and there is a solid metal handrail all the way up. We recommend bringing plenty of water and snacks if you are attempting this trek with kids. This trek is not really suitable or safe to attempt with a young toddler or a baby; even using a sling or carrier would be very challenging due to the steepness of the steps.

5 Visit the Emerald Pool

Emerald pool dome lens

If you are looking for unique and memorable things to do in Krabi with kids, then we highly recommend a visit to the stunning Emerald Pool, which is situated around 1.5 hours drive from Ao Nang. The Emerald Pool is a stunning clear natural pool situated in an area of dense jungle and mangrove forest. It is possible to swim in this pool (don’t forget swimming stuff and a towel), and if you bring goggles, you can see small fish swimming in the water. The water is not too deep, so if your kids are not strong swimmers, they can still enjoy a dip.

After taking a dip in the Emerald Pool, you can walk a further 600m to the Blue Pool (this small jungle pool has an intense blue color). The path to the Blue Pool closes at 3:30 pm. If you only have one or two days in Krabi, you may want to skip the Emerald Pool. It is important to consider the length of the journey; 1.5 hours each way means that your kids will be spending around 3 hours in the car. If your kids do not enjoy car journeys, then you may want to skip this activity.

If you are visiting the Emerald Pool, you can also take a visit to the Krabi Hot Spring nearby. There is a ticket office at the entrance, and it costs 400 baht for adults (around £8 or $10) and 200 baht for kids (around £4 or $5). The Emerald Pool is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

6 Visit the Krabi Hot Spring

Krabi hot spring river

The Krabi Hot Spring is situated right next to the Emerald Pool. So, if you are traveling all the way to the Emerald Pool, we recommend planning some time to visit the Krabi Hot Spring. The Krabi Hot Spring is a great activity for families, especially if you have older kids. This is not a typical hot spring where you have a warm geothermal pool; rather, this is actually a geothermally heated waterfall, which makes it particularly unique and interesting.

You can sit in small pools of hot flowing geothermal water as you gaze at the jungle. The Krabi Hot Spring is also cheaper than the Emerald Pool, costing 200 baht for adults and 100 baht for kids. It is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm. Because the Krabi Hot Spring is open later than the Emerald Pool, we recommend visiting the Emerald Pool first and then visiting the Krabi Hot Springs before you go back to Krabi. There are changing rooms, toilets, and showers at the Krabi Hot Spring. The facilities are good, but they are a little run down; the water temperature is 35 – 40 degrees Celsius. If you are visiting with younger kids, we do recommend careful supervision in this area.

What is the best way to get around in Krabi with kids?

Don’t miss the FULL GUIDE – How to Get Around in Krabi

1 Car Rental

Krabi Car Rental

The best way to travel around Krabi with kids depends on your budget and your desire for convenience. One of the most convenient and affordable ways to travel around Krabi as a family is to use a car rental. You can find car rental deals starting at around 1000 baht per day (around £20 or $25). The best way to get a good price for car rental in Krabi is to contact a car rental dealer directly on Facebook and negotiate a fair price.

In order to drive a car around Krabi, you will need to have a driver’s license, and your car rental dealer is likely to check this before they release the car to you. If possible, it is better to have an international driver’s license; you will need to purchase this before you leave your home country. However, if you are unable to obtain an international driver’s license, an original document should be sufficient.

We recommend checking the car rental contract carefully. It is also important to check the car carefully, looking for any damage or scratches on the body of the car, and to take photos of any damage to keep a record of the condition of the car. Car rental dealers will ask for different deposits; in some cases, you may be asked for a passport. If possible, we recommend negotiating a cash deposit. They will normally ask for a 3,000 baht – 50,000 baht deposit (£60 – £100 or $80 – $120). If you’re traveling around Krabi with a baby, then you may be able to negotiate a child seat in the price of the car rental deal. You should also be able to request car drop-off and pick-up from your hotel in Ao Nang or Krabi.

2 Taxi

Songthaew Taxi Krabi

A taxi is a very convenient way to travel around Krabi; however, it is important to recognize that taxis are relatively expensive in this area compared to other areas of Thailand. There are two different types of taxis available in Krabi. You can find shared taxis called “songthaews.” A shared taxi journey around Krabi town or Ao Nang is likely to cost around 100 baht – 300 baht depending on the distance. You can either flag a shared taxi at the side of the road, or you can often find drivers waiting around.

If you are taking a shared taxi, they will pick other people up along the way. Alternatively, you can use the Grab Taxi app to book taxis in Krabi. This is the cheapest way of finding taxis in the area. In order to use the Grab Taxi app, you will need to have a local SIM card with some mobile data and you need to download the app to your phone. Once you are set up and running with an account, you can order taxis on the go. Prices range between 50 baht – 250 baht for local journeys around Krabi and Ao Nang Town.

3 Tours & Trips

Koh Thap Koh Mor from Tub island

Another way to travel around the area is to book tours. It can actually be cheaper than paying for taxis, especially if you are visiting destinations that are further afield. Most tours and trips in Krabi include hotel pickup and drop-off from Ao Nang Town and Krabi Town. Tours and trips may charge for kids depending on their age, so it is important to check before you book. When you are trying to work out your budget, you can either book tours and trips online using websites like Klook.

Alternatively, there are a lot of small tour operators located in Krabi town and Ao Nang. They can help you book tours and transport, and it is possible to barter for the best prices. When you book a tour in Krabi with a local tour operator, you will need to pay for your tour upfront, and then you will be given a receipt confirming your booking. You should be picked up from your hotel at the pickup time.

What do you need to plan before you visit Krabi with kids?

Princess Cave Phra Nang Beach Krabi

If you are visiting Krabi with kids, organization is key. A little planning and preparation before your trip can reduce stress and help you have an enjoyable time with your family. Here are a few things that you need to prepare in advance before you visit Krabi with kids.

1 Book your accommodation

Krabi is a relatively busy and popular area; there are plenty of hotels, resorts, and guesthouses to choose from, so you will always be able to find something. However, we do recommend booking your accommodation nice and early to give you more choice. If you leave it to the last minute, you will likely be left with reduced options, and you may struggle to find a place that is good for your family. If you are unable to commit to your travel dates, we recommend booking a place with a good free cancellation policy. This means that you will be able to cancel for free for any reason up to a certain date. You can find places with family rooms (triples and quadruples). Some of the more expensive resorts have great facilities & amenities for families.

2 Book your Tours and Trips

We recommend booking any tours and trips in advance before you visit Krabi. We mentioned that there are local tour operators situated in Krabi, and this is a good way to book tours on a budget. However, if you are traveling with kids, especially if you only have a short amount of time, we recommend getting all of your trips booked in advance. Booking trips locally is a very good way of saving money, but it can also be time-consuming, especially if you are shopping around between different tour operators. Anytime you spend shopping around is time lost with your family, so we recommend getting your trips and activities booked in advance.

3 Organize your Transportation

You will need to book your transport to and from Krabi in advance. We also recommend you spend a little time planning your transport around the Krabi area. If you are planning to travel around using taxis, you may want to download the Grab Taxi app in advance of your trip and register for an account.

Alternatively, if you are planning to rent a car, we recommend contacting a car rental dealer a few weeks in advance and working out a good deal, including pickup and drop-off time and location. If you are planning to use a motorbike to travel around Krabi, you do not need to arrange it in advance (some people do travel around on motorbikes with kids).

What are the best places to eat in Krabi with kids?

Yenly Yours Ao Nang Mango Cafe

1 Local food with kids

Thailand has some of the best food in the world. Local food in Thailand is remarkably cheap, fresh, tasty, and generally pretty healthy. One of the things we love about Thailand is that you can be as healthy or unhealthy as you like. If you are looking for healthy local food, you can find dishes like green curry, red curry, massaman curry, and Tom Yum soup. All of these curries are very healthy and tasty, but they are likely to be too spicy for kids.

A great alternative for kids is Tom Kha soup; this is a very tasty coconut soup which is not spicy. It generally contains vegetables, chicken or seafood, and noodles. Thai food can also be a little more treatful and a little less healthy; for example, fried chicken is very common around Thailand, and this can be a great treat for kids. Also check out Yenly Yours Mango Cafe in Ao Nang. Oh yeah and don’t miss the Landmark Night Market – this has some kids activities and plenty of food options for kids.

2 Western food options in Krabi

Kids activities at the Landmark Night market

Krabi is a relatively touristy area with plenty of options for food. This is great if you are traveling with kids. You can find lots of restaurants and cafes around town serving Western food, including pancakes, chicken sandwiches, chips, and burgers. Alternatively, if your kids like sushi, you can even find sushi places around town.

There are also plenty of convenience stores around Krabi; 7-Eleven stores are very common, and they tend to sell a range of kid-friendly snacks and food, including bread, cakes, croissants, and toasted cheese sandwiches (yep, that really is a thing in Thai seven-eleven stores!). There are also several brand-name restaurants around, such as McDonald’s and KFC. So you will not struggle to feed your kids in Krabi; there is a wide range of choice, food is relatively affordable, and you can get kid-friendly food (both healthy and less-healthy options available!)

What things can you buy in Krabi if you are traveling with kids?

Ao nang Landmark seven eleven

If you’re traveling to Thailand with kids, you will be glad to hear that there are plenty of 7-Eleven shops situated in every town and many locations between towns. There are lots of 7-Eleven shops in Krabi, and you are likely to be staying within a 5 or 10-minute walk of your nearest 7-Eleven.

7-Eleven stores in Krabi are a great place to stock up on your supplies for kids. You can find nappies for babies (both travel-sized packs and large packs are available). In 7-Eleven stores you can find wet wipes, baby milk, snacks for kids, and you can even buy kids’ toys! You can also buy helpful products like sun cream and mosquito repellent, and you can even buy things like umbrellas and ponchos for a rainy day.

How do you do laundry in Krabi?

Laundy in Thailand pay by kilo

One of the big challenges of family travel is getting the laundry done. To be honest, that is a challenge with kids wherever you live. There are several different options for getting your laundry done in Krabi.

1 Pay by the Kilo Laundry Services

The most convenient way to get your laundry done is to drop it off at a local laundrette. Some of the tour operators around Krabi advertise laundry services which generally cost around 50 baht per kilo. A family load of laundry is likely to cost around 150 – 250 baht (£3 – £5). Most laundry services offer a next-day service, so you drop your clothes off one day and then pick them up the next day, and they are generally folded nicely and clean and fresh.

2 Self-Service Laundry

Alternatively, you can find some self-service laundry machines around Krabi, although these are not as common in Ao Nang (the touristy area). If you want to use a self-service laundry machine, you will need to have some coins; it normally costs around 30 baht – 40 baht for the wash and around 50 baht to dry clothes. If you do use a self-service laundry place, remember that you will need to load the machine, unload it, load the dryer, and then unload the dryer, so you will need to take three visits to the laundry place over the space of a few hours. This is probably not a great use of time if you are only in Krabi for a few days. If you do use a self-service laundry place, we also recommend checking that there are working dryers before you put your washing into the machine.

In some cases, your hotel or guesthouse may also have a laundry service. This is generally a little bit more expensive, but it can be a lot more convenient. The only thing we would avoid is paying for a service that charges per item; this could get very expensive if you are doing a family load of laundry in Krabi.
