For example, if you have always dreamed of visiting an elephant Sanctuary, you can find elephant sanctuaries in both destinations. You can try scuba diving in both Phuket and Krabi (although Krabi tends to be a little cheaper). You can go snorkelling in both Phuket and Krabi (Krabi is slightly better for snorkelling).
Both destinations offer island hopping trips – Phuket is generally more expensive because the islands are further away (from Phuket you can visit the iconic Phang Nga bay). You can go sea kayaking in both Phuket and Krabi – but Krabi is more impressive (especially the Tonsai and Railay area). In fact you can even stay in the Railay Beach area. You can visit night markets & get amazing affordable Thai massages in both Phuket and Krabi. Both destinations are great for trekking and wildlife. You can also learn Thai boxing (Muay Thai) in both destinations – although Phuket has some better Thai boxing schools available.
Phuket vs Krabi for budget travelers
If you’re traveling on a budget, then Krabi is slightly cheaper than Phuket, especially when it comes to activities. Accommodation prices are very similar in both Krabi and Phuket. Phuket is a larger destination and therefore has a wider variety of choice when it comes to hotels, so it can be a little easier to find a budget place to stay. It is also more expensive to travel around Phuket. Taxis do cost more in Phuket because Phuket is a larger area. So Krabi is a slightly better destination for budget travelers. It is important to note that Krabi is a relatively touristy destination, and prices are higher in Krabi than other areas of Thailand. So if you are traveling on a really tight budget, neither Phuket nor Krabi are great options.
Which destination is better for families?
Here is the Blue Tree Adventure Village in Phuket – amazing soft play for kids…

Phuket and Krabi both have a lot to offer for family travelers. The best destination really depends on your travel style and travel goals. If you are looking for a relaxing and luxurious family holiday, then we recommend the north-west coast of Phuket (Bang Tao and Mai Khao bay), which has lots of large luxury resorts with amazing facilities and services for families. Phuket is also more cosmopolitan than Krabi. It has a large mall and plenty of brand name restaurants. Phuket also has some great activities for families with younger kids (Blue Tree Adventure Village and Kidzoona). On the other hand, if you are looking for a more intrepid and adventurous family holiday, you probably will be more attracted to Krabi. Krabi is a great option for a family with active teenagers. You can explore jungles, mangroves, hot springs, and even try some family rock climbing.

Is Krabi or Phuket better for luxury travel?

The great news is you can find luxury resorts in both Phuket and Krabi. The main difference is that Phuket has more choice. As a larger destination, Phuket has several bays offering large luxury resorts (especially Bang Tao and Mai Khao beach in the north). You can also find a good range of luxury resorts offering private pool villas in Phuket. On the other hand there are some very beautiful, unique, and stunning luxury resorts situated along the coastline in Krabi. You can also find some amazing private pool hotels in Krabi. Although there is less choice in Krabi, the options are very impressive, so we do recommend taking a look at the best luxury resort in Krabi before you make your final choice.
Which destination is better for adventure travel?

You can find adventurous outdoor activities in both Phuket and Krabi. Both destinations offer beautiful jungle trekking, waterfalls, viewpoints, and adventure sports. If you are looking for an intrepid jungle hike, then we recommend the trek to Princess Lagoon in Krabi. If you are looking for an adrenaline rush, you can try paragliding at the Black Rock Viewpoint in Phuket. Both destinations offer ATV tours. Overall, Krabi is slightly better for adventure activities, and prices are slightly lower in Krabi.
Which is better for nightlife?
Phuket and Krabi both offer plenty of nightlife, including restaurants, bars, and clubs. However, Phuket wins the nightlife competition. If you’re interested in nightlife, then we recommend heading to Patong Beach. This area has a well-earned reputation for some of the best (and worst!) nightlife in South Thailand.
Which destination is more popular? (Krabi vs Phuket)
Krabi and Phuket are both very popular tourist destinations. There are some advantages to the popularity of Krabi and Phuket. Both destinations have plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants. It is easy to find a wider variety of food, and you can find plenty of small local travel agents who can help you book trips, tours, and transport connections.
It can feel slightly easier to escape the crowds in Phuket. This is mainly because Phuket is a larger island with more beaches and attractions spread around the island. Krabi has some extremely stunning scenery; however, this does attract the crowds, so don’t expect to get these iconic beauty spots to yourself.
If you are really hoping to escape the crowds and get off the beaten track, then we don’t recommend traveling to Krabi or Phuket. Instead, we recommend traveling to some of the lesser-known towns and national parks in South Thailand.
Planning an itinerary that includes both Krabi and Phuket
Khao Sok National Park is a beautiful area near Krabi & Phuket

If you have time in your trip, you may wish to plan an itinerary that includes both Krabi and Phuket. In our opinion, this is a good use of your travel time in Thailand because it only takes a few hours to travel between Krabi and Phuket, and you can do this journey very cheaply overland. If you do include both Krabi and Phuket in your travel itinerary, you will not lose a lot of your Thailand time to transit.
However, there may be some other destinations in South Thailand that attract you more. For example, if you have spent time in Phuket or Krabi, you may prefer to visit the stunning Khao Sok National Park nearby. Alternatively, you could head over to the east coast of South Thailand and visit Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. These islands are also popular (like Krabi and Phuket), but they do have a very different vibe and atmosphere to Krabi and Phuket. The islands are slightly less developed and more chilled out. Koh Tao is also one of the best locations for diving in South Thailand.
Alternatively, if you have enough time in your trip, you could travel to North Thailand and explore Chiang Mai and some of the stunning scenery in the surrounding provinces.
