Penang disadvantages

best beach in Penang water

If you’re trying to decide whether to visit Penang or Langkawi, it is worth being aware that there are a few disadvantages of Penang. For example, Penang is a larger island and can be crowded and intense at times. The traffic in Penang is much busier than Langkawi and some of the roads around Georgetown can get very congested – especially at peak times. Penang does have plenty of beaches but they are not as nice as Langkawi. Another disadvantage of Penang is the low water quality. Around Penang island the water is murky, polluted and jellyfish encounters are common.

Langkawi overview

How to get to Langkawi car rental
Car rental Langkawi

Langkawi is a smaller and less developed Island than Penang. Langkawi does not have a public transport system at all. The only way to get around Langkawi is to use taxis or car rental. Getting to Langkawi is harder than Penang. You can only take a ferry or fly. Car rental is cheap and readily available in Langkawi starting at around RM60 per day. There are plenty of rental companies at the pier. Some people choose to drive to Langkawi using the car ferry. Be aware that the car ferry is actually quite expensive and it is likely to be cheaper to park and rent a car in Langkawi. If you are using taxis to get around Langkawi we strongly recommend downloading the Grab taxi app to book your taxes and get a fair price.

Langkawi Culture

Langkawi is more culturally homogeneous than Penang. The main cultural ethnicity in Langkawi is Malay. There are Chinese and Indian communities in Langkawi – but they are not as big or as established as they are in other locations.

Langkawi food

Langkawi traditional Malaysian food

We mentioned that the predominant culture in Langkawi is Malay. As a result, most of the cheap local street food is Malaysian. However, Langkawi is a very popular tourist destination in Malaysia. Therefore, you can also find a wide range of international cuisine especially around tourist locations (e.g. Cenang Beach). On average, food in Langkawi is slightly more expensive than food in Penang. This is partially due to the fact that food is slightly less available in Langkawi.

Langkawi activities

Secondly, Langkawi can be quite a touristy destination – which may not appeal to you if you are hoping to get off the beaten track. Finally, Langkawi is more challenging for transportation.
